How about that? We've made it to Week 8!

(I know a couple people who are anxious to get to Week 9!)

We did end up losing a few people last evening: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/734403.html But hopefully we will keep seeing them around these parts!

The new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/734517.html with an extended deadline!

and the Work Room seems to have a really cool discussion going on. (no official mentor, but I've asked a couple people to stop in and give their thoughts on the topic, and there's already a lot of valuable information being shared) http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/734857.html

What are your plans for this weekend?

Maybe not first, but still special.

And yes, attending memorials is part of what friends must do, sometimes.

Hello all! Hope you are well!

I'm loving this prompt; my one complaint is that I now have too many ideas and am having a hard time choosing just one. I'm seriously considering writing a piece on the evolution of a meme that I helped create. The interplay between myself and other folks could be viewed as a form of Improv...

Date: 2014-05-02 02:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] karmasoup.livejournal.com
I had that same reaction to this prompt, and so did my housemate, though, I've been giving him shit, because so far there hasn't been a prompt yet that hasn't made him grumble. I would think ONE eventually would have got him excited. But, when I told him, there are 85 million different directions he could take this, he said he knew, that's why he hated it... he's not good with that many choices. It might as well have been an open topic. (Which is why I have a spreadsheet somewhere of stories I've been meaning to get around to telling one of these days... may have to track that down this week!)

Happy Friday, everyone! I'm feeling really good today and I'm really excited about this week's prompt and that we have so long to work on it.

I'm feeling a little bit torn this weekend because I'm currently on a job hunt and I'm waiting to hear back from one but after next week I'll have an interview at the job that I really want, which is to be the assistant manager of the museum in my town. I'm not sure if I should turn down the job that I don't want that much in order to wait to interview for the job that I do want, but I guess at least I don't have to worry about it because I haven't been offered the other job as of yet.

Anyways! I want to start reading the book Born to Run, and start running again now that the snow is all melted and it feels like full on summertime happiness again here. Whee!

Sooooo my mom thinks her cat is a dog. O.o I spent like half an hour this morning trying to talk her out of hauling the poor kitty for a walk. (She's an indoor cat, hates harnesses, and inevitably sits down and refuses to move when taken outside. I have no idea why Mama keeps trying.)

We borrowed her to groom her (mama is terrible at keeping her brushed/bathed), and she was reluctant to come out of her carrier, and then went and found a box and is glaring at us from it. (Probably because our reaction was, "How adorable!" and grabbing for the phone to take pictures, and the flash was on. Oops!) We did get the top section of her brushed before she decided that she'd had enough of sitting in a lap for the time being. Anyone in the southeastern USA want a cat? We are thisclose to adopting her ourselves.

We have one pudgy cat that my housemate takes out for a "walk" now and then - he has a harness and leash (the horror) but he only walks / is prodded home - on the outbound leg he is pulled in the bottom half of a wheeled cat carrier, lol!

Unfortunately, nothing but chores, chores, and more chores, interrupted with a period of cycling. I live near a really outstanding paved bicycling/running trail that extends for over 30 miles along a a beautiful river. I ride on it 3-4 times week. It's wonderful.

Long answer.

Date: 2014-05-02 05:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] p-m-cryan.livejournal.com
If by "weekend" you mean "a day where I'm not at my place of employment", also known as the bookstore, then today is my weekend. I caught up on some badly-needed sleep; I'm currently cooking turkey bacon, and later I'll be taking my long overdue six-mile circuit walk to the bank and post office. When I come back, I have laundry and other housework to catch up on.

If, on the other hand, by "weekend" you mean "Saturday and Sunday", I'll be at the bookstore. When it's busy I'll be putting books into people's hands and hopefully making them happy; when it's quiet, I ***really*** need to muck out my office so that I can concentrate on catching up on e-mail and phone calls next week. Lots of event-planning going on... I have Elizabeth Bear (http://www.elizabethbear.com) doing a booksigning next Saturday, and I'm working on having at least one event and sometimes three events every weekend between now and November.

Short answer.

Come play with me! I'm taking suggestions to incorporate into my piece for this week:

http://alycewilson.livejournal.com/606761.html

I did something like this during Hell Week a season or two ago, and it was fairly successful. This time, however, I'm going to pick and choose from the suggestions in order to keep the piece to a reasonable length. Depending on how things go, I might contact people whose suggestions weren't used to provide further ideas as I move along.

Tomorrow is vaccuum-and-steammop day for the fortnight, although it occurs to me that having a cat again means this is probably going to turn into a weekly chore again. Sunday I want to try a new church, though I may not get up that early, and I need to spend the afternoon writing. And at some point I need to update my sadly-neglected website, which would be easier if I could remember what my website was called. O.o

I'm getting my garden started this weekend. I'm not happy with my cilantro--I think the major cold snap we had in April tricked them into thinking they're second-year plants now. I knew I should have waited until May to put anything in the ground.

I have an idea I'm working on for the topic, too, but I may take a bye. I don't know if I'm going to have the brainpower to do anything this week. My work schedule's being screwed around with for the next two weeks.

I also had to do something I feel really lousy about, and it didn't even involve whips or floggers. I had to have a talk with my daughter's preschool teacher about stuff that left her in tears a few days ago.

The cat apparently thinks we ought to be hand-feeding her. She refuses to eat out of her dish. And she's picky, she won't eat the X's, only the oval-shaped, round, and square bits. Anybody have a picky-eater cat? What do you do?

My grumpy-mom answer is, "If she gets hungry enough, she'll eat it."

But my actual-love-my-kitty answer is, Are the X bits a different flavor? Maybe she has a favorite, but would eventually eat the rest if that's what there is, and when you run out you can change to a different food.

So I know [livejournal.com profile] banyangirl1832 was looking for this info, and a few others may be interested, too!

List of conferences -
http://www.newpages.com/writing-conferences/

Breadloaf is pricy but one of the big ones.
http://www.middlebury.edu/blwc/

Tin House ditto on pricy and big deal.
http://www.tinhouse.com/writers-workshop/

Simon's Rock, I don't know much about them but it's in the Northeast.
https://www.simons-rock.edu/berkshire-writing-workshop

Out in California, but also includes academic credit.
http://www.naropa.edu/academics/jks/summer-writing-program/

Pricy, and in Ohio - this is what I was at last year and it was well worth it. Focus here is on generating new material rather than workshopping existing stuff, and that's what I liked.
https://www.kenyonreview.org/workshops/writers/

Toronto - another one with academic credit.
http://learn.utoronto.ca/courses-programs/creative-writing/courses/u-of-t-summer-writing-school-2

*******This is a great combination of good price, great teachers, and flexible schedules all summer long. There's even a week that's round-robin, where the writers work with a different teacher in a different genre every day. Iowa is a place noted for the quality of their writing program, too. Yes, it's out in Iowa, but the pricing is so cheap one could buy a plane ticket and go there and still pay less than a lot of NE workshops.********
