Green Room - Week 8 - Day 1
May. 2nd, 2014 10:12 amHow about that? We've made it to Week 8!
(I know a couple people who are anxious to get to Week 9!)
We did end up losing a few people last evening: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/734403.html But hopefully we will keep seeing them around these parts!
The new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/734517.html with an extended deadline!
and the Work Room seems to have a really cool discussion going on. (no official mentor, but I've asked a couple people to stop in and give their thoughts on the topic, and there's already a lot of valuable information being shared) http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/734857.html

Date: 2014-05-02 02:25 pm (UTC)I'm loving this prompt; my one complaint is that I now have too many ideas and am having a hard time choosing just one. I'm seriously considering writing a piece on the evolution of a meme that I helped create. The interplay between myself and other folks could be viewed as a form of Improv...

Date: 2014-05-02 02:56 pm (UTC)I'm feeling a little bit torn this weekend because I'm currently on a job hunt and I'm waiting to hear back from one but after next week I'll have an interview at the job that I really want, which is to be the assistant manager of the museum in my town. I'm not sure if I should turn down the job that I don't want that much in order to wait to interview for the job that I do want, but I guess at least I don't have to worry about it because I haven't been offered the other job as of yet.
Anyways! I want to start reading the book Born to Run, and start running again now that the snow is all melted and it feels like full on summertime happiness again here. Whee!

Date: 2014-05-02 02:59 pm (UTC)We borrowed her to groom her (mama is terrible at keeping her brushed/bathed), and she was reluctant to come out of her carrier, and then went and found a box and is glaring at us from it. (Probably because our reaction was, "How adorable!" and grabbing for the phone to take pictures, and the flash was on. Oops!) We did get the top section of her brushed before she decided that she'd had enough of sitting in a lap for the time being. Anyone in the southeastern USA want a cat? We are thisclose to adopting her ourselves.

From:Long answer.
Date: 2014-05-02 05:11 pm (UTC)If, on the other hand, by "weekend" you mean "Saturday and Sunday", I'll be at the bookstore. When it's busy I'll be putting books into people's hands and hopefully making them happy; when it's quiet, I ***really*** need to muck out my office so that I can concentrate on catching up on e-mail and phone calls next week. Lots of event-planning going on... I have Elizabeth Bear (http://www.elizabethbear.com) doing a booksigning next Saturday, and I'm working on having at least one event and sometimes three events every weekend between now and November.
Short answer.

I did something like this during Hell Week a season or two ago, and it was fairly successful. This time, however, I'm going to pick and choose from the suggestions in order to keep the piece to a reasonable length. Depending on how things go, I might contact people whose suggestions weren't used to provide further ideas as I move along.

Date: 2014-05-03 12:21 am (UTC)I don't know why we are doing this, but we are.
I also had to do something I feel really lousy about, and it didn't even involve whips or floggers. I had to have a talk with my daughter's preschool teacher about stuff that left her in tears a few days ago.

From:SUMMER WRITING WORKSHOPS
Date: 2014-05-05 08:38 am (UTC)List of conferences -
http://www.newpages.com/writing-conferences/
Breadloaf is pricy but one of the big ones.
http://www.middlebury.edu/blwc/
Tin House ditto on pricy and big deal.
http://www.tinhouse.com/writers-workshop/
Simon's Rock, I don't know much about them but it's in the Northeast.
https://www.simons-rock.edu/berkshire-writing-workshop
Out in California, but also includes academic credit.
http://www.naropa.edu/academics/jks/summer-writing-program/
Pricy, and in Ohio - this is what I was at last year and it was well worth it. Focus here is on generating new material rather than workshopping existing stuff, and that's what I liked.
https://www.kenyonreview.org/workshops/writers/
Toronto - another one with academic credit.
http://learn.utoronto.ca/courses-programs/creative-writing/courses/u-of-t-summer-writing-school-2
*******This is a great combination of good price, great teachers, and flexible schedules all summer long. There's even a week that's round-robin, where the writers work with a different teacher in a different genre every day. Iowa is a place noted for the quality of their writing program, too. Yes, it's out in Iowa, but the pricing is so cheap one could buy a plane ticket and go there and still pay less than a lot of NE workshops.********
