I was reminded this morning about what I don't like about the movie Frozen.

There are "spoilers" here for a movie already out on video and all over the internet.

No, it wasn't the fake out at the beginnng that made me want to shut it off (glad that I didn't) or the hype as half the population projects their issues onto it. That's a given, it's the internet, that's what it does and what Art ends up being (more about the person viewing it than the actual piece).

What ended up frustrating me is that *she's the Queen*. Maybe she hasn't been coronated yet, and perhaps there is a guardian who is running the day to day operations. OK, I get that. Classic palace intrigue. There usually is a form of power struggle when a stewart is facing their charge coming into their own.

But when she comes out of seclusion - yep, she's the eldest child of the deceased rulers of the kingdom. She shows her powers and the immediate reaction is "WTF", so she runs off. Had she stepped forward and said "Damn right", people's reaction at that point would likely have been "We have the most powerful ruler OF ANY KINGDOM! We are safe!!" and there would have been much rejoicing.

Had someone tried to do anything to her - um... still the Queen. If the palace guards had any loyalty to the family at all (and they seemed to), had she said the slightest thing (instead of running away) her enemies would have been taken down so fast that had they been alive to do so, they would have been dining with the rats in the dungeon before sundown.

Instead, she runs off and - builds a castle out of ice to live in alone. The ruler of her own ice castle. Instead of the ruler of a kingdom... ah, but she *still is* the ruler of that kingdom. It's not like someone was going to say "Oh yeah, ran off for a few hours, guess you're not in charge anymore!"

The movie would have been shorter, and with less production numbers - but it would have been nice to see her realize "wait, why AM I RUNNING FROM MY OWN REALM??? F-you!!!"

and that is my theory on brontosauruses.

In other news: The LJ Idol poll for Week 2 is coming to a close tonight. Who has your senses tingling? Considering how close the polls are, who isn't getting the love that they deserve? It's your last chance to make your case for this week: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/719384.html

Once you have had your say with that, if you still want to tell people what you think, why not head on over to the Killing Floor and offer some constructive criticism: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/719625.html

I think I've read about three quarters of the posts now. And I haven't looked at the poll at all yet to see who's doing well or not but will try to do a list later.

The issue with Elsa is that her parents have traumatized her with what happened to Anna, that it's her fault and since she can't control her powers (as no one ever told her how to or let her develop them properly, they just locked her up), she's terrified it will happen again (and of course does), so she does what she knows: she goes to hide.
The trolls said fear would be what would be the worst for her, and it turned out to be, but not in the way that her parents told her it would.

I've been reading sporadically but I'm on a temp job assignment that is extended slightly, which is good of course but takes some time atm.

There are a lot of movies that would have been MUCH shorter if people did the logical thing and didn't run around doing stupid things. ;)

But I did enjoy Frozen and it was the first movie that I ever took my kids to in the theaters, so it'll probably feel special because of that for a while.

and Gary, Brittany, my eldest, didn't agree with your analyze of Frozen.

Her points:
She ran away because she was taught all her life to hide her powers. It was her knee jerk response.

If she stayed in place, she wouldn't have learned how to control her powers and could have killed all the people she was trying to protect on accident.

I've never had any desire to see Frozen for some reason.

Here's a loaded question based on last night's discussion here at Chez Kiz: Do men and women write differently?

From: [identity profile] lawchicky.livejournal.com
I think everyone writes differently, but I can't necessarily point out the sex of the person who is writing just by reading a piece. Just my opinion, but I don't think it is a gender thing..

I took an "epic hair" picture today! ^^ Mostly it was because I threw it in a ponytail while it was still pretty wet and didn't take it out until I was ready to go to sleep, so it's mostly just epically wavy. I haven't read any entries yet, I'm so sorry. :( I'll probably do it today if I can. I'll at least get through my tribe since I always tend to go the opposite way and not get through all of my tribe and that makes me sad.

I'm hitting "crunch time" for my project. I admittedly could have worked much harder on it these past few days when I hadn't, but I blame the lack of interest on the concussion. ;) Can't wait to get back to skating, though! I could probably skate tonight but I'm going to play it safe and maybe bring my skates, but not participate in any contact at all....

Ummmmmmmmmmm.... What else? It's currently "so cold" here, a frigid 62°!!!

I can't say that I agree with Gary's frozen theory, but I'm just reading my OWN stuff into the story, which is the natural reaction. Poor Elsa was so scared of hurting anyone with her powers and was so ashamed of them that it was her reaction to run away. It's hard to see the positive side of a power that everyone has convinced you makes you monstrous instead of miraculous.

I am attempting to finish up some work projects before we leave for Philly tomorrow morning. I also need to pack for myself and a bag for the kids, who are staying with my parents.

SO MUCH TO DO!

Quick Frozen comment, because of course I have Disney Movie Opinions (heh) - the whole thing with Anna and especially Elsa is that they had the world's worst monarchs for parents. Seriously, they were terrible. Elsa never learned how to be queen, because her parents never bothered to teach her (and I'm not sure they knew how to rule, either. Yeesh). Sure, standing her ground and being all "well, here it is" would have neatly circumvented all the problems of the movie, but considering the set-up and background? Perfectly natural for her to do what she did.

And now I have to finish packing so I can get on an airplane this afternoon. Eep!

I've read most of the entries, and commented on most but not all. Going to hit the final ones over the work day, and boy, that's a lot of stories!

We haven't seen Frozen, and probably won't. Our kids are older, so there's no pressure, and really... most of the music has driven me nuts from The Lion King forward (yes, including The Lion King). There's an occasional song I don't hate, and the Production Numbers are always fun, but mostly... bleargh.

I've been intrigued by the meta over Frozen, though, and that a story about a girl rescuing her brother has turned into a girl rescuing another girl. Because girls saving boys from danger? We Can't Have That! Or something. The ways in which stories are modified for movie demographics is rather frustrating at times. I remember watching The Borrowers, in which only-child Arietty suddenly had a brother-- in case little boys would not want to see the movie otherwise. Argh.

Gee, I sound grumpy this morning. Fine, let's go the full distance: Get off my lawn!

Feeling low today, wanted to go to NYC but didn't want to go on my own, had an hour nap and a shower and now I feel somewhat normal, although I'm hungry, which isn't helping the low feelings, and I might force myself to do something productive after lunch, just to say I did something with my day off. My Take on Frozen and the Nature of Superstition

Date: 2014-03-27 08:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cloworora.livejournal.com
It depends on how superstitious the culture is, doesn't it? I mean, sure she's powerful, but so was Baba Yaga according to her folklore. People might still start rounding up pitchforks and demanding a body. It also could be accepted in this world at this point that kings and queens can be replaced and excuses for assassinations are common. SPOILER Considering how one of the climaxes of the movie showing that the political climates are corrupt and prone to betrayal, anyway, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to just whack a queen.

Now that I'm done tossing around half-baked hypotheses, remind me never to play around with Livejournal's alignments ever again. Also, how is everyone?

It seemed to me that the culture in general didn't quite know what to think, but given that the Duke of Weasel-town was busy calling her a monster and calling for her to be destroyed, thus confirming her worst fears...yeah.

Also since the accident when she was eight, she had spent the last 13 or so years trying to do nothing at all with her power except hide it and try to make it go away, even though she actually had pretty decent control over it when she was eight, all things considered. So sure she can use it to do all kinds of awesome things deliberately, as long as nobody else is there with her. Or she can use it instinctively in defense as long as she is too overwhelmed to consciously avoid hurting someone.
