If you had asked me a few years ago if I would like a Pennywise song, I would have looked at you like you were crazy.

Chances are pretty good that I would have looked at you like you were crazy anyway, but I definitely would have done so if you had asked me that question.

I'm not really into the whole 90's California punk scene, or at least not the portion that seemed to go more metal than punk, and ended up all over the place as a result.

I'd heard of Pennywise, it would have been difficult not to, but I really didn't listen to them or factor them in as more than a musical footnote.

If you asked me about a song called "Bro Hymn" I definitely would have tuned out. The whole "Bro" thing doesn't do much for me.

A few months back though I watched a documentary called "The Other F Word". I was just looking up information on that movie, trying to recall the name of it, and found out that apparently it was inspired by a book that the lead singer of Pennywise wrote. So, I'll just cut and paste the description "The book explores the dichotomy of being a responsible husband and parent raising 3 daughters while fronting an anti-establishment punk rock band"

For obvious reasons, the idea of figuring out that balance that it takes to be a Dad is something that has been growing in importance to me over the last year. It's always a title that I've wanted, but one that I never thought was going to happen.

Sure, it's "Bonus Dad", so a lot of the responsbilities are off my shoulders, but there is still a lot of "Dad things", and figuring out how to meet that role, while still "being me" is a process. One that I know every single Dad - and Mom - out there can relate to, I'm just jumping in late into a game already in progress! :D

I really enjoyed the movie, and during it, that song was mentioned - as well as the reasons behind it. The original bassist wrote the song as a tribute to three friends who died in a car accident. It was about how much he missed them.

That bassist later killed himself, and the lyrics were changed slightly to be about him. The grief was passed from the bassist to the rest of the band, who apparently sing have that as their last song every night.

"To all our friends present past and beyond
Though you weren't with us too long
Your life is the most precious thing we could lose
While you were here the fun was never ending
Laugh a minute was only the beginning
Jason Mathew Thirsk this one's for you!
Ever get the feeling you can't go on
Just remember whose side it is that you're on
You've got friends with you 'til the end
If you're ever in a tough situation
We'll be there with no hesitation
Brotherhood's our rule we cannot bend
When you're feeling too close to the bottom
You know who it is you can count on
Someone will pick you up again
We can conquer anything together
All of us are bonded forever
If you die I die that's the way it is --
To all our friends present past and beyond
To all those who weren't with us too long
Life is the most precious thing you could lose
While you were here the fun was never ending
Laugh a minute was only the beginning
Jason, my brother, this one's just for you"

They ended up not being able to be there to save him, but use the song to encourage other people to be there for each other. Which, I really like. Still not a Pennywise fan, and I left out the whole "Bro..." part of the chorus, because it's kind of distracting from the main point of the song. (Although I'll admit, it's catchy)

Not really sure what the point of this was other to say "Be There For Each Other" and of course, to bury the lead/what I originally came here to say.

Which is that I've gotten disenchanted with the whole "waiting" period and trying to raise money - and if I've gotten disenchanted with it, I can only imagine what the rest of the world is thinking.

So here it is, in plain terms: I'm leaving the fundraiser open. I've even started a Go Fund Me for it, to make it easier to share: http://www.gofundme.com/LJ-Idol I included the money raised for the other causes. (Thank you for that)

If you want to give - great. If you can't - I get it.

But Season 9 will open for business on MONDAY MARCH 3RD.

I'm giving you time to get prepared. I've never done that before, and I'll never do it again, because this is definitely the last season. I might not even come back for "mini-seasons", and right now All Stars, a concept that's intrigued me for years, is highly questionable. If you ask me, right at this moment, I'm probably just walking away at the end of it and closing the doors. But I promised a Season 9, and I keep my word.

Will I change my mind 15,000 times before the end of it? Maybe. I can't want to Jack Paar it, but I also accept that there's a chance that I will.

Here's what I need from you: I want to go out with a bang!
IDOL deserves it.
You have from now until March 3rd to spread the word. Idol was built by word of mouth, and I think it's appropriate that people rally one last time in it's name, to warn that wolrd that LJ IDOL IS COMING BACK FOR ONE LAST HURRAH!!

Well, this post filled me with feels. And also reminded me that I started watching that movie but didn't finish it, so that's what I'm going to do now!

... ensures that I *can't* be hit with the birthday curse season 9, as the first vote will be after that. Glad to hear it.

It will be a good time, as work settles into a routine for 6 months, and I am only juggling 9 things instead of my usually 20 for me to play.

I, too, am glad that I will be able to skip around the "birthday curse," since my birthday is this weekend. :)

Still, March seems so far away. But January is almost over and February is a short month, soooo... :D

March 3rd incidentally is my birthday, but our actual bio birthday is tomorrow... March 3 isn't too big of a deal.

Why do I have a different birthday? I actually can't remember the reason.. some math was involved and that's not one of our favorite subjects.

I'll see if we're busy by then...

You were trying to make me tear up on purpose, right? Man, that song! Idol friends are true, that is certain.

Wow, March. I hope to participate. I also think my new job is starting this week. But surely I'll be all adjusted and able to add Idol in by March, right? :)

I like the idea of commercial breaks - "And now, a word from our sponsor!"

Heck, almost all series have a few weeks of reruns wherein they take a break, then come back with another dozen new episodes! Even Survivor typically has a "catch-up" week wherein they remind you of what has happened during the first part of the season.

Sadly, I won't be able to be part of the very final season of Idol. :/ March 3rd is the date when something very major is going to happen in my life (or is supposed to, if I get to that point), and it's going to take up a good month or two of my time. I've been away long enough that I'm certain most people have forgotten me, so it's okay, but I am a little sad I can't participate. I will be watching and cheering from the sidelines when and if I can, though. Good luck to those writing their hearts out (or half-assing it, whatever works)! Six weeks to prep is a generous gift to give people, Gary. ;)

Well, I know *you* haven't, because I'm still around to bug you. ;)

And thanks. I really wanted to participate, and thought I'd be able to, but alas. It was be an amazing final season though. As for what's happening - if it works, it will be amazing, and if it doesn't, it will be pretty mind-numbing. That's vague, but I kind of have to be vague for now. But I should be okay. Thanks for all the kind words. It's definitely been a LONG few months!

Thanks - you're on my FL here and on FB, so you'll know soon enough, IF it goes well. So far, it's all too unknown. :/ And it's been a rough few months, but I hope things settle down. Thanks for still being here, and I'll miss being here for LJ Idol! ♥.

Right now, I plan to play, but life for me has been a tad crazy and volatile and unpredictable, and I have a bunch of possibilities in the air and no idea which of them are going to turn into things, but I doubt I can resist the final season. :)

I miss you guys. <3

This is about where I am, too. I think all of the projects I'm currently working on should be done by then, or shortly after. But I could easily pick something else up any time.

But I still want to play!

How interesting.
3/3/00 was the day my middle child was born.
As such I can Honistly say we here will be celebrating with cake.
I don't know if I will join in as my only net able device right now is my kindle fire and its not even hd.
But I really should share the story of the events of 3/3/00 as I am certain they will make you all laugh.

Thanks for the lead time. March should be better for me than February would have been, since January is a very busy month and I still am trying to catch up on things from the holidays.

Lately, I find myself spending more "quality" time with my son, KFP. This means less time social networking and the like. For the first time since I had him, I don't even feel the slightest bit guilty about that.

Still, looking forward to LJI as a way to boost my social interaction again!

YAY! Naturally it's starting while I'll be in the middle of moving, but at least that'll only affect a couple weeks. Worth it for the sake of FINAL SEASON OMG.

I didn't read the lyrics you posted, because I don't like crying at work, and I was getting close just with the backstory. Grief is a hard thing.

hi - I was wondering how much it will cost to participate / sign-up for the next season? And how much is it generally to sponsor someone else? This has probably been answered elsewhere but I haven't lurked much!

As I understand it, there's no cost to sign-up or participate. Donations are just to help Gary / our evil overlord keep things going. :)
