The clicky boxes have spoken, and here at Week 15 we are saying goodbye to a couple of my personal favorites.

Which, let’s be honest, most likely we were going to be saying goodbye to my personal favorites regardless of how the results came out. Unless *that person* left… they know who they are! ;)

Seriously though, it’s been a fantastic run and I hope both of you had fun.

Goodbye to

and thank you for coming out for this mini-season! Remember to check out the Community Chest: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/676576.html and send me your Top 5 picks!

It was a good run, and I'm pleased with the new stories I got to write this time around. I enjoyed playing, and I'll be watching to see what happens. This group of writers/readers seems to "get" [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim better than any before, just as Exhibit A seemed to really "get" [livejournal.com profile] impoetry, and that's been gratifying to watch.

My partner in elimination asked me to link his farewell entry, since he's away from the computer right now. Some parting words from acalculatedname (http://acalculatedname.livejournal.com/6241.html).

Thanks, everyone, for your support this round, and good luck to the final 6!

Thank you so much!

That last story was a risk, and I lost, but it offered growth into a new voice and approach, and that's always worth it in the long run.

Good luck in the remaining rounds!

Your support these last several rounds has been very much appreciated, too. I got to read your stories as well, and there were so many that I really enjoyed! I'm glad you get to do this as more than a hobby. :)

Thank you-- you too! I actually enjoyed our intersection, which was the first time that had ever happened, and it was so nice to have that process finally "click."

Good luck!

I'm sorry to be leaving, too, but the quality of writing in our last several rounds has been SO high that I can't feel too bad about it.

Good luck! Your fiction this round has really paid off!

I am really quite sad to see you go (and you know I'm telling the truth - I haven't commented on much around these parts in a long while!), and still think your entry is stellar and heartbreaking. It is a fine piece of writing, and all of your entries have been fine pieces of writing. You have been a constant favorite, and a damn fine writer of an extremely high caliber.

Thank you. You've offered such wonderful support this season, and I'm sorry this story is the one that took me out because I know it hit a lot of areas that really resonated with you. It was so nice to know that you thought it was worth writing, and was an important story to tell. That meant a lot to me, since you've lived through something too much like it and know how hard that truly is.

*hugs*

Awesome for me too, and at least I didn't wind up going out as a result of our last Intersection, which was wonderful in all respects.

Good luck with the rest of the round!

Thanks so much to [livejournal.com profile] halfshellvenus for steppin' in while I was stuck in hell playing horrible Britney Spears covers. It goes without saying, but not enough to keep me from saying it anyway, that I'm very sorry to see her go out at the same time as well.

Thanks to everyone for all the fun this season and please do take me up on my invite (http://acalculatedname.livejournal.com/6241.html) (already linked by HSV) if you feel the urge.

Good grief, that's a double bummer!

Well, mine was picayune review comments on work docs from two co-workers who have written 0 of these things, and I'm 4 docs into a total of 8 or 9. And over schedule. Yay.

Sorry to see you go, as well as me, but what a great season!

'Twas, 'twas.

On the cover band... a recent experiment. I wanted to play bass somewhere and they found me on Craigslist saying so. I feel like I was a little misled by the stuff they told me to have prepped for audition, which was all stuff I didn't *mind* covering. Now every time they add new stuff to the setlist, it's invariably awful current-ish Top 40 stuff I detest, and it seems to be choices motivated by their actual *tastes* as opposed to just "eh, the plebes will dig this one, let's do it."

I didn't mind it for a while as they are all pretty good players, but it's getting old quick. The enjoyment of playing music with good folks only goes so far if you hate what you're playing with them and constantly question what you actually have in common with them in terms of taste.

Just did my first gig with them on Saturday and it went off OK but was a super-weird crowd vibe. We have four more gigs in the next two weeks, and after that's all over / depending on how all that goes, I am thinking about telling them to start looking for my replacement.

This is kind of akin to playing Pops Concerts, as an orchestral member. You're just doing it for the money (and usually glad you can find the extra gigs), but OMG-- bastardizations of Also Sprach Zarathustra wedged in between selections from "Cats" just makes you want to stab yourself through the neck with your bow at some point.

Playing bad music is torture.

LOLing sympathetically at the idea of an _ASZ_-A.L. Webber warhorse-medley. Who would actually enjoy hearing that? I thought the Hooked on Classics series died in 1984. Good thing bows aren't all *that* pointy.

Nothing else I'm doing musically will pay a dime, but I'm not doing this for the money; I mainly want to have the experience of playing more and get a chance, MAYBE, to network with some of the veteran musicians in the area (if one turns up and says hello). The money we're bringing in these next few gigs *may* pay for the additional equipment I've had to buy (secondhand, of course) in order to play those gigs.

And the nice thing about playing bass in this context, done half-improvisationally as opposed to reading a detailed pops chart, is that it actually offers a challenge - "how can I use my own knowledge and musicianship to make this purely-diatonic four-chord vamp actually interesting to listen to for four ongoing minutes?" There are limits, of course, to how much Personal Voice I can get away with adding, but there's still room to continually use my music-brain, throw in little melodies, kick in a lick that evokes another (more interesting) style momentarily, spice things up with a well-chosen inversion here or there.

Still, the weirdest part so far has been getting text messages from this group of obviously-reasonably-talented musicians in which someone says "Hey, can we do a Kelly Clarkson tune?" and everyone else responds "OH HELL YEAH THAT WOULD BE AWESOME." How does that... happen?

I will miss our music chats :(

Not so much a medley as part of the musical lineup. ASZ is better known to the public as the theme from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", so the goal there would be to make the 20-minute piece about 3 1/2 minutes long and repeat the main melody again and again.

"OH HELL YEAH THAT WOULD BE AWESOME."
God, who ARE these people? Besides young? And stupid?

My son, who used to groove on Tchaikovsky AND Led Zeppelin, has found a new music genre that is even more irritating than rap (since I don't like straight rap). It's some sort of electric-genre that is frenetic and basically sounds like the background music for an arcade game. Except less melodic. o_O

I'll miss our music chats too!

From: [identity profile] acalculatedname.livejournal.com
Yeah, I know the "cultural significance" i.e. layperson knowledge of ASZ (or part of it), thus "warhorse." :) It's like, hey, let's take JUST the P theme from Beethoven 5 / I and mash it up with... disco! Oh wait (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ouMaLRth-s).

The band is two younger singers (one is also the keyboardist, but doesn't know the tweaky geeky shit that I expect any MIDI-equipped performer to know), a hired-gun drummer in his late 20s and then a guitarist who is maybe mid-40s and should know better. The latter seems to have dragged all the slightly older / more structurally sound stuff I *thought* we'd be playing into their setlist, but he's also the one who suggested Kelly Clarkson. I don't get it.

Re: your son's newfound interests, I believe you are referring to dubstep or some derivative. I'm a sucker for obnoxious electronic noise and synth-geekery of all kinds. Dubstep has gotten pretty played out in recent years, though. (When it starts ending up in commercials...)

Date: 2013-09-10 07:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] halfshellvenus.livejournal.com
Yes, it's a dubstep derivative. Basically, it sounds like busy electronic noise. Surprisingly irritating!

(also, the kids are way into guys like Deadmau5 right now, or they were a year ago. that really weirds me out, because the guys like Deadmau5 are basically making music that sounds almost exactly like the most boring of 90s electronic dance stuff to me, just with a little more 21st-century digital gloss on it.)
