Now that you have had a couple of days to read what’s out there in the polls – where are the highlights, and more importantly, where are the unexpected gems that you can’t believe more people haven’t read/commented on? http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/673598.html

Because they are out there, and we all know it! Which means it’s your job to sell us on them!

Any trends you have been noticing in this mini-season? (Good or bad) Heck, any predictions on how this whole thing is going to play out? (Yeah, I’m totally asking if you want to jinx someone else by pointing them out! ;) )

I predict that it's going to end in a three-legged race through a flaming hoop.

More like a series of flaming hoops, each getting smaller and smaller!

Its all good.
I'm not just saying that cause I have been having a lot of problems with my asthma lately and not much sleep.

I've finished reading and voting in the bottom 3 polls; only two more to go! I don't take good enough notes to remember whose stuff I really want to point out, but there have been quite a lot that I've liked.

Commenting seems very low, IMO. I've seen some entries with just two or three comments on them. COMMENTS ARE LOVE, Y'ALL!!

I think the season will end with a rough-and-tumble Cage Match between three contestants, each sleep-deprived due to having written eight entries in four days in iambic pentameter, or something sinister like that!

For others ... it's a special brand of hell.

Agreed re comments. Them again, I've had times when it's a good time to sit down and read five or ten entries and " Frank" is being a total butt head.

I noticed a severe lack of comments on quite a few entries. It's odd since that doesn't seem to have happened in the previous weeks of this season. :P

We're on a "brown out warning" here. The electrical grids are so taxed from the heat wave that they're randomly sputtering. All the mass transit trains are on enforced speed limits because the heat is warping the tracks. Last night one of the grids caused a sizable fire within hop-skip-jump distance of Chez Kiz. It wasn't our grid, but if this keeps up, ours will probably do similar :shudder:

And now they're saying the break from all this won't be until late in the weekend, if not the beginning of next week. And then it's back to yet another heat wave...

I apologize for griping here. I'm so sick and done with A/C and not being able to take out The Kidz and feeling woozy every time I step outside it isn't funny.

Damn, and I thought it was bad here! Sounds like you've got a literal heat wave apocalypse up there. Hope the crazy heat decides to GTFO soon.

From: [identity profile] xo-kizzy-xo.livejournal.com
It's crazy! We're not immune to heat waves in and of themselves, but we've never had one that's lasted this long, and it's what, like the third or fourth one so far? The utilities up here were never constructed to withstand heat like this.

I need to go grocery shopping and I'm putting it off because the thought of driving anywhere makes me want to go ~tHuNk~

That said, my brain is also melting. Or at least it feels like it is.

My power has gone out the past 2 days in a row at the hottest time of day.

Has your power co started asking you guys to do things like use your large appliances (ovens, laundry) in off-peak (night) hours?

They sure have. There's been one of those ticker take reminders running at the bottom of the TV screen. It's the first thing they announce on any news broadcast. We also got am automated phone call from the electric company about it.

A full freezer will stay cold longer than a half-empty freezer, so one thing you can do is put in some containers of water (not all at once or you'll drop the temp in there while they freeze) so there's more cold stuff in there if the power goes out for a while. Do it at night, so the compressor runs off peak.

When the power goes out, keep the door shut, like, don't look in there to see how it's going.

Also, meat can be re-frozen as long as there are ice crystals in it, and if it does completely thaw, you can cook it and then re-freeze it.

Yes, I did work for mumbleteen years in cust serv for an electric company.

:nodding:

Heh, I never heard of that water trick. The downstairs freezer is full; the upstairs maybe 2/3rds full. We still have power, although the brownouts have been popping up frequently (at one point this afternoon the A/C seemed to die, even though it's on and wasn't on its energy saver cycle...and it suddenly started again.)

Just took The Kidz out to potty. It's still too blasted hot out there to even think of walking them. I think they finally understand they're going to have to wait until SO gets home from PT Job.

We had thunderstorms here earlier today, and at work our power flickered out for a second, somehow killing my phone lines (but not those of the team in the next pod over). It was nice having peace and quiet for an hour or so until they got it fixed!!

They're saying we're getting thunderstorms all day Saturday and then we'll get a couple of days of respite...then another potential heat wave starting up again mid-week next week :p

It never bothered me this much until after I had my thyroidectomy.

Yesterday at work we had to go into pre-emergency procedures to make sure the refrigeration/freezers didn't conk out. They shut off the A/C for a bit, and for awhile there it was cooler outside, believe it or not, compared to inside.

They've been dimming the lights at work all week because of this. And not running the a/c as high as we're used to. It's annoying. I can sympathize.

I am super slow on commenting - just now getting to a few comments today, and I hope to do more this evening and tomorrow. Apologies! It's been one of those weeks.

Some shout-outs for awesome writing which is needing more love (there may be more later), one per each poll:

- [livejournal.com profile] tatdatcm's entry (http://tatdatcm.livejournal.com/55516.html) in the "young" poll is like a deep draught of summer, full of sensory images and nostalgia.

- I have a soft spot for dystopias, and [livejournal.com profile] m1ss1ngcupcake's "time" entry (http://m1ss1ngcupcake.livejournal.com/3115.html) is a really great piece - there's good characterization, a neat setup, and nice details.

- I really liked [livejournal.com profile] everywordiwrite's "smell" entry (http://everywordiwrite.livejournal.com/89294.html) - it's hard to write about something personal and literally painful and still have it be so relatable, and I think she did a great job with that. Complicated things are complicated, and it's awfully hard to disentangle them.

- I was super excited by [livejournal.com profile] joyfulfeather's "flaw" entry (http://joyfulfeather.livejournal.com/1110845.html). It's a fascinating peek into a critical stage of development for the next generation of our space program, and joyfulfeather is TOTALLY right in there helping make it go. SO COOL!

- And in the "bamf" poll, I see that [livejournal.com profile] tatdatcm is a little low on votes, which just seems wrong to me - this story (http://tatdatcm.livejournal.com/55065.html) has got a lot going for it - tons of action, good world building, nice details. You should read it, and then click on clicky buttons and vote for it, just like so.

I'm so glad to hear you're going to get further tests. Something is clearly far more wrong than was originally thought, and they clearly haven't fixed the problem yet. I hope they finally get to the bottom of the problem!

*hugs* It's going to be rough going through all the tests, but hopefully you will FINALLY have some answers and be able to break out of this horrible spiral. Hang in there.

And you're welcome - I think yours was a really strong entry, in a very competitive category and for a hard prompt, too.

Hey, I know Idol peeps are probably more bee-aware than most people because emo-snal made us love them so much.

So, thought I'd mention this article http://kathrynrose.livejournal.com/816472.html?thread=5883224&#t5883224

Check out www.house.gov if you want to contact your Representative. The number listed for my rep was a mailbox that was full, but clicking his name sent me to his website and I got his office number and talked to a staff person. Your call will be given more weight if you mention the bill number (H.R. 2692) and just give them a one or two sentence explanation of why you want them to support the bill.

I'm pretty far behind in reading right now. Unfortunately, the only excuse I have is because I've been trying to get to Colorado for my friend's funeral.

I have finished one poll, and I'm afraid I'm not commenting much. I've been refraining, because I feel like my brain is a little disconnected from the rest of my body, and everything that comes out is not quite right.

With that in mind, some of the stuff I have read has been fantastic. If I can get my act together, I'll name specific entries tomorrow.

Hugs to all.

On the news right now: Extreme Heat Advisory tomorrow with temps nearing 100F. With the heat index it'll feel more like 110F.

And now that I'm home again for a few minutes, I'll be all on-topic for a minute! Whoo....

It's been really hard for me to identify overall trends in this season - I don't know why, exactly. I can definitely identify one personal trend that I find a little odd - my votes have been astonishingly consistent. Last season, and last mini-season, I definitely had favorites I often voted for, but it wasn't like, every week was marked green for those folks in the spreadsheet. Nor were there a lot of red streaks in the spreadsheet either. This time around, though, my voting trends are a lot more predictable. I'm still reading everything, and I'm actually a little surprised looking at the spreadsheet to go "really? I've voted for that person every single week?" but there it is! Maybe everyone is just really in their groove and doin' what they do. I dunno. Anyone else noticing this?

As for a prediction about how this will all play out - nuhuh! You can't fool me, mister Evil Overlord. I'm not going to tell you my hopes and dreams only to have you cackle madly, dangle me over a pit of angry badgers, and then rip all those dreams cruelly away. :P

(Though I'll be reallllllly surprised if at least two of the people I'm betting on don't make the finals. And those names are super sekrit with a k, so there.)
