How long do posts have to be public for?
Can/should you make a journal just for this? (for privacy reasons)

Technically you don't have to have them public at all - but that's a disadvantage to you since people can't read them (unless of course everyone joins your friends list)

But if you want to make them public and then friends only I would say to wait from the point you post them until the voting closes. (voting will be - mostly - over the course of a weekend. So the simple answer would probably be "a week" although that will vary.)

I replied to the necessary post in order to join the LJ Idol competition. There were a ridiculous amount of comments to that same entry, so how do I know for sure that you got my "hey I'm joining" link?
