Green Room - Week 11 - Day 6
Apr. 10th, 2013 10:09 amThank you to everyone. I tried to get to as many of the comments as I could yesterday, but this thing called “work” kept getting in the way!
Who do these people think they are? Don’t they realize there is a GREEN ROOM, and that you need to spend time there?
This work thing needs to reevaluate it’s priorities!
***
This is the time of the week where I usually ask “Who isn’t getting enough love?” in the poll – but looking at the numbers, it’s still pretty close. Some are down, but not by huge numbers – and really it still looks like just about anything can, and probably will, happen! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/641109.html
So instead, I’ll frame it this way – fill in the blank, “ if ______ goes home this week, I will cry”.
Granted, then I will know how to make you cry. But I’ve already voted… so I’ll just have to hope for the best! : )

Also, if I go home this week, I'll cry. Not for any other reason than I'm not done writing and I don't feel like waiting for Exhibit B. I'm on a roll now, dammit! I don't want to stop writing!
And, also,

Date: 2013-04-10 07:33 pm (UTC)I got some news last night from the 14 year old teen mom I mentor that her 17 year old sister went into labor yesterday with her SECOND child. Apparently getting pregnant at 14 is expected in their family. I have a home visit with myself and a social worker planned for their family.
THEN when I got to the meeting last night another mentors girl pounced me as I walked through the door and let me know that she would not be returning to the meetings. As we talked she let me know that her 15 year old best friend is sleeping with the father of her child who our girl has a restraining order against because he almost killed her. She is 17, he is 22. We have contacted the authorities.
This mentoring program is a joy to me but I often find myself asking what the hell is wrong with this world. I had a really hard life but my life is NOTHING compared to some of these girls. Absolutely nothing. It hurts to hear their stories, it hurts so much. I pray every day that we're making a difference and that it's a lasting difference. They are so young to be going through so much and we all know that the hard stuff doesn't end just because you're not a teen anymore.
Last night, don't laugh at me, I was listening to "Something to Believe In" by Poison. It seems so poignant to me at the moment...
I'm sorry. That was a Green Room bummer wasn't it? Someone mentioned funny pictures. Bring 'em on please. :)

Date: 2013-04-10 08:11 pm (UTC)When you actively care for someone who has so much legitimate stress in their lives and so little emotional resource, you make a difference, and it's an important difference, even if the people you help can't tell you what it means to them, and even if they haven't stopped long enough to recognize it.
And you're helping young people, and young people with babies. The impact of the care and counsel you give changes the future.
It's easy to lose track of that when you're caught in the Overwhelm. Do something good for yourself. Recharge. The most important thing people in caring professions have to remember is "You can't pour from an empty pitcher."
Metaphors. I got a million of 'em.

Date: 2013-04-10 10:29 pm (UTC)London is still fabulous and I am still in it. My feet hurt, but today we went back to the British Museum (I just can't get enough of plundered treasures of the world) and went to see Phantom of the Opera, like some sort of super tourists. Yesterday was the Tower of London!

Date: 2013-04-10 10:50 pm (UTC)There is so much to see in London. And now that you've been to the Tower... you've seen what passes for ravens over there, haven't you? They're GIGANTIC. And evil-looking.
Over here, they're basically indistinguishable from crows, but a bird that is 3-feet+ from beak to tail is not a crow. :O

Date: 2013-04-11 12:35 am (UTC)It is not something I was ever really allowed to do so I just don't do it.
There really is so much good writing at this point it is hard to not just vote for everyone . I. Managed but I have had people tell me that I am evil. Of course that is just a nasty rumor my mother started.
