It comes down to taste. Some people have it, and some don’t. ;)

Oh, what I meant to say is that not everyone has the same taste in things. Personally, I always read that “such and such” has brilliant writing and I see it for myself and yawn. Or I really get into something, and someone else “doesn’t get it” at all – including usually getting key plot details wrong in their descriptions, and they chalk it up to “bad story-telling”. Honestly, a lot of that seems to be ego-based. After all, YOU are the greatest judge of everything, ever. At least by your own perceptions. Because that’s literally how you filter the world around you – through yourself. I’m not even saying “ego” as a bad thing, but rather as a “thing that is”.

So you are going to love something that someone else hates – and someone else is going to hate something you love.

And that’s OK.

(as long as no one is hating the things that I say are great. In which case, you are just wrong! :D)

I think what Gary said is born out by how CLOSE the poll has been! This probably means that we all have some form of audience, some of which may be overlapping and some not. That's the beautiful thing about this competition. It's like a little petri dish where you can try out different approaches and see what flies!

*nodnod* The poll has been really, really close lately. Every time I think I'm a little ahead and I relax I see that I'm in the bottom. It's going to be a tough one. But there are some really talented people and it's been a lot of fun writing with them all.

That's one of those things that comes up every season - and this mini-season hasn't proven to be the exception. When the numbers get down to the wire, opinions start flying about who likes what. Which is great. But can also be frustrating from the outsider perspective of looking at where support is and isn't coming from for various people, and going "Yeah, THESE people like this sort of thing. THOSE people like that sort of thing. It's all OK folks... really, you can all co-exist." ;)

I am so frustrated and whiny right now it isn't funny. I can't do A until B is completed, can't do B until I hear from C...gah, this crap is getting OLD. I need to find something to do so I don't dwell on it. Oh, and moving around with nary an ache would be nice too.

I just finished reading and voting and man! what terrific stuff was there. Usually there are a few entries that don't catch my attention but this week..I can't say I LOVED every one... but pretty close! I have the utmost respect for the originality, unique perspectives and quality of all these writers.

Generally, I like to be entertained. If the piece hits me as funny or scary or sad or horrific or keeps me on the edge of my seat, that's all good.

If there's one thing I've learned since being involved with LJ Idol, it's that I can never predict which entry is going to entertain me unless I read it so I really do my best to eyeball every one if I possibly can so I can place an honest vote.

Hello Greenies! Haven't finished reading the polls yet; currently entranced by my latest novel, The Night Circus. Intriguing story set in the late 1880's through early 1900's. I need to finish it before the 20th when my hubby and BFF and I will be attending a Night Circus Gala here in town, which the author will also be at - woo!

In good news, at bowling last night my "strike pot" ticket was drawn, and since I managed to bowl a strike I won the pot - over $350!

In bad news, I'm currently sitting in the ER w hubby, who has been having stomach pains and is waiting for a CAT scan. The co-pay on an ER visit is $250, so there goes most of my profit, lol. Easy come, easy go!

There's a lot of great stuff out there this week. I mean, have you seen porn_this_way's entry? I giggled, a lot. Out loud. And frightened the cats. theun4givables wrote a really tight and engaging piece of historical fiction this week that I loved, too. Totally different styles, totally different approaches, and both really excellent entries.

In other news, today I am flailing at packing. How does one pack for a three week trip overseas? I mean, should I just take the "eh, we can always get it there" attitude and hope for the best, or give in to my Girl Scout tendencies and try to be prepared for All The Things? I have no clue. I just hope I can manage to find time to write other that-a-way...

We're finally getting ourselves together after losing one of our cats on Easter. It's been a sad, sad time.

She was our rescue kitty that someone had dumped in a field near my office, and was probably about 18. We had her for 17 years, and she was older than both of our kids, which makes it even harder for all of us.

You know those sweet cats you hear about, who love to snuggle and be near their people? She was one of those. Our remaining badass, take-it-or-leave-it cat just makes her absence all the more noticeable. *sigh*
