I'm totally a beginner too! I'm taking "Japanese for Beginners, part 2" through the local university's continuing education program. It's a pretty awesome class, taught by a guy who actually knows a thing or two about foreign language acquisition, but it's still the first non-Indo-European language I've tried to learn so it's all a little baffling.
