Community membership numbers are higher than ever, and of course, the Green Room is doing its best impression of a ghost town.

Which is a shame, because it’s not like we will be having very many more of them this season. I hope people will come out for the ones that we do have!

This week marks the first day of school for at least kids in the US. When do schools start “elsewhere”? Do they really have “schools” there? Why? It’s not like foreigners need an education! For that matter, considering that foreign extends to everything outside of my apartment, and there are no schools located in my apartment – do we really need them? Or can we just skip to the part where I have taken over the world and am crushing the rest of you under my iron boot????

Hmmm – maybe not iron. That would be impractical to walk around in, unless “you people” are carrying me. Then, I guess it would be OK.

School starts today in the southern US, not up north - and I don't know how they do it out on that weirdo left coast. I've been in NC for almost 20 years and I still can't get used to school starting in August. In NY (and the rest of the normal world) it starts after Labor Day. School before Labor Day is just crazy!

I try to pop in the GRs, but yeah... They're pretty empty these days and very few people respond. It's sad how dead it is in here these days...

Why start school at all? Isn't education just a waste? I mean *some* people in this country (and I won't mention any groups of people specifically... ahem) think that somebody needs to wash our cars and such therefore making school and education totally superfluous and should be left to those who actually deserve it... the wealthy!!!

I always found it weird growing up that American kids started school in August/September and finished in May or whatever... I mean here we do it sensibly - school year starts in January/February, ends in December. SAME AS THE NORMAL YEAR :P

I seem to be heading to bed or somewhere equally silly whenever the GR gets posted these days.

What's new with everyone? Nothing much is happening around here. Certainly not labour, which could happen any time it likes. Do you know what I'm looking forward to most? Sleeping in any damn position I feel like. I actually dream about sleeping on my right side, or my tummy. Wow, that is going to be amazing.

Anyway. I should go and take a shower. After all, tomorrow is a school day, and I could go into labour, right?

I'm starting to think about checking out preschools for KFP. Parents, what should I look for?

Read their philosophies very carefully, especially their attitudes towards things like taking in favourite toys. I find that preschools that come across as strict in their brochures tend to be quite militant in their approaches to the children. You can also tell whether they're just after your money if that's what they focus on in their literature. Make more than one visit and if you can get personal recommendations, all the better. Also check that you'll be able to visit if you need and that it's not a problem to hang out a bit if you want - again, places that discourage parents from hanging around in the name of fostering independence often want to hide what they're really like. When I was looking at places for my middle daughter, we very nearly went to the daycare that was closer than where she eventually went, but on my third random visit there weren't many children there (which was understandable - it was a new establishment) and the woman in charge was fiddling about on the laptop instead of engaging the children and one of the boys was jumping over the furniture because he was bored. With so few children, they should have been working with them more, not less, so I knew that my mischievous monkey would not do well there and put here in the place further away where she met her husband to be. (Seriously. They still email and she says that when she's grown up she wants to move back to NZ so she can marry him.)

My youngest daughter starts nursery school on my birthday (6 September - yes, Gary, I do expect a special GR so I can FINALLY have a birthday shout out after all these years :P ) and that's I think when most UK schools start. Of course, since we don't do school, it's not applicable to us, but it's hard to get your children to do anything schooly when all their friends are on summer holidays... Still, I managed to get them to work for an extra week because we are going on holiday next week (home school camp, funnily enough, full of hippies - Gary - you would be in your element!) and then then week after has my husband's birthday as well as mine, so we are unlikely to get much done. So "school" for us starts 10 September I guess, if you want to look at it that way.

My husband has been sent to Copenhagen at the last minute, which is more than a little annoying, since I've finally found my mojo and I'm all geared up to make changes to the Fey Publishing web site and work on the two books that are in their final stages of completion and due out in plenty of time for Christmas shopping. I want it all done before we leave on Monday...

The votes are pretty tight in that poll - currently, only 17 votes difference between first and last place! *keeps fingers crossed*

Iron boots are totally not practical for taking a stroll in, but think of how great your leg muscles would be after stomping around in them for a while! Of course, they are *divine* for crushing minions underfoot, so at least there's that.

I have not been active at all this year in the green room. Mostly because I have been super lazy.
My kids start school Sept. 5th. YAY!!!

Back in the stone age, when I was a wee one, we started school the day after Labour Day. Then things changed. Now (in Quebec anyway, and we've always been *different*) CEGEP (kind of a bridge between high school and university) started today. Actually, some had to start last week to make up for the student strikes that went on in the winter and spring, but today is the usual day to start. Elementary and high school usually start the Tuesday or Thursday before Labour Day, and unibversity usually starts the Tuesday after Labour Day. But again, this year might be different because we have an election on Sept. 4. Confused? Me too.

In a lot of Indiana, school has been under way since Aug. 1 due to new "balanced" schedules that have two-week spring and fall breaks as well as the big Holiday break and a shortened summer. They didn't change the athletic seasons to match, tho, so the jocks don't get to take spring and fall vacations.

Our kids' school started last Thursday, and next year it's slated to start on August 12th.

An abomination, in my book. It's all geared toward the high school kids finishing their first-semester tests by the Christmas break, and affects ALL of the grades.

Meanwhile, our summers are only 10 weeks long, and the schools fritter away ridiculous amounts of time on random days off, "teacher work days," "Minimum days", and other B.S.

The state (California) is in money trouble, so teachers are apparently having random "furlough" days during the school year. WTF? Why not do those at the beginning of the year, and make the year shorter?

Because I can guarantee that parents of younger children are not going to easily find random daycare on those off-days!

Sorry- this is a hot-button issue for me. The stupidity in the Sacramento area on this topic just grows year after year. :0

I can't really get on and post during work anymore, and these are usually posted when I'm asleep or when I'm at work, and I know that hardly anyone is going to be reading or replying or caring later in the day, so...

Also I'm just on a general interacting with other people break at the moment. I'm an introvert who needs to recover from months and months of social interaction, what can I say?

Plus humans aren't doing much to make me want to interact with them. I really wish my real species would come get me off this planet.
