Puppies + Unicorns = PUPPICORNS!!!

Puppicorns for everyone!!

Now there’s a Green Room everyone can get behind! :D

***

http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/595911.html is the place where the action is at!

There was a comment yesterday about the benefits of getting to read a block of someone’s work, and what you have found about them as a result. So – what have YOU learned about these 7 contestants, and contestants – what did you learn about yourselves from the process?

puppicorns is a very cute word, but it also sounds like a new snack food that could be all kinds of wrong. :o

I agree. I want to like it, because how can you not like puppies and unicorns? But the mash up of the words doesn't work for me.

I really want to answer this question but I'm trying to finally catch up on work after all the craziness of Hell Week.

One thing I noticed is how different our "fallbacks" are when we get overwhelmed. Some people write poetry, others do nonfiction, etc. Mine are apparently meta and back story for my existing characters.

The other interesting thing I noticed is that it seemed for a lot of us, our weakest period was 36B. We all started off fairly strong 36A. A lot of the pieces in that section were different from what we'd normally produce, but they were cool in their own way. The stuff in 36B, to me (including my own), seemed the most thrown-together. By the time we made it past that to 36C, I thought most people put out some really strong stuff. It was like we pounded our brains past the point of broken and then found just that little bit more.

From: [identity profile] kathrynrose.livejournal.com
Looking at my spreadsheet, I found the "A" entries weaker than the others. I have selected more "B" entries across the board than the rest of the times.

C is my strongest set, I think. And like you said, B was possibly my weakest overall. Primarily because I work and have a dog that has ongoing issues... Writing during the week is nearly impossible. I have about an hour a day to myself during the week. I think by the time I got to C, I was used to pounding this stuff out and figured if I could handle B, C would be easy. So I was relaxed and put out a stronger set I think.

Hmmm... puppies and unicorns. But there's something even better in this world: Budgies.

I'll be honest and say that I haven't read any of the entries for this crazy week. Not that I've been reading a ton anyway, but hell week reading reminds me too much of beginning of the season reading, but without all of the enthusiasm for SHINY NEW THING! Oh well. My time to do stuff other than chase after a very active 9 month old is limited... and mostly it goes to:
-Genealogy obsession
-Playing video games
-Keeping up with my friends on LJ/Facebook

But I like to pop in here from time to time, because it reminds me that I do like writing and meeting people and reading cool stuff and maybe I can get back to that.

I haven't finished reading everyone left.... But what I can say is this week really proved why the other 6 are here. They wrote their butts off. I love the diversity of the group too. We are all very unique and have something different to offer.

Alyce - her creative nonfiction is what I like the most. She's a great writer overall, she writes good fiction, but her nonfiction distinguishes her from the rest. I love nonfiction though, I love learning about other people's lives. Alyce does this extremely well.

Java_fiend - Well it's obvious I love him :) He is obviously super talented with the creepy fiction, but I think many people fail to see how awesome he is with funny nonfiction. He's hilarious and really knows how to tells story. His writing is amazing, fiction or nonfiction.

Milk_and_glass - She's very good with emotional anything: fiction, nonfiction, poetry. She makes you feel pain when the character is hurting, joy when they're happy. It's not a talent that everyone has, it's something many struggle with. She's nailed it.

N3m3sis - She brings Her own unique ideas and stories. Her writing is fun and unusual, which is very good. You never know what to expect with her. For someone who's said to be a new writer, she's come a long way since the beginning!

Notodette - Her funny entries always get me. Her sense of humor is dark and I love it. Her style of writing is very tight and she writes really well, never too much telling. She shows us her story instead of tells it to us. Which is something I always enjoy.

Whipchick - She's just really good at any style she attempts. She shows instead of tells, her poetry has even been accessible to me (and typically I'm not a poetry fan). She is dang good at what she does.

I'm running late for work do sorry if I slacked a bit... In closing, everyone deserves to be here.

I learned that I can do so much more than I think I can. Writing 17 entries? I'd never thought that was possible. And I'm really proud of my overall work too. So that should say something since I used to hate everything is write, regardless how long I spent on it. I liked my stuff this week :)

I currently have my magnification on 400 percent because my eyes are bothering me from gas fumes we had in the area the past day and a half. Happily it rained last night. The air is much nicer today, though I still catch a whiff every now and then. I don't know if that's remnants or if it's an indication that it will get bad again. Cross your fingers.

Hopefuly my eyes will get better once some advil and allergy meds kick in and I can get my last seventeen entries read!

This isn't quite a Puppicorn, but it's the closest I've got! Yay, Puppicorns!

I've been reading all of Topic A posts by each contestant, then will go to all of the Topic B posts, etc. I've only got through 3 contestants worth of A posts, but I'm working on it as I have time. All of them thus far have been pretty exceptional, although some I have liked better than others. I've got a spreadsheet going at home, and am "grading" on a scale of 1-10 points, to see which topics by which authors will make my Top 30 list. W00t!

I completely agree with Sarah about noticing the fallbacks.

I do essays. When under stress even my fiction starts looking like an essay. LOL.

Poetry, sci-fi, horror, you name it, we all have different fallbacks. I think that's so cool!

I also noticed something in myself that I wouldn't have noticed otherwise, which is I mark for creativity based on the person, now that I know what to expect.

For instance, there's one of Alyce's that's ranked just about at the top. Had yachiru written it, it still would have gotten my vote. But it would have probably been ranked, say 15 instead of, like, 2 or 3. Because seeing it come from Alyce was amazing for me. IDK if that's fair or not, but it is what it is. It shows growth, a willingness to experiment and move forward and creativity, imo, on the part of the writer.

I don't mark by the person, just because I don't keep up with what people have written from week to week, though I think if the season went on from this point I'd know what I'd expect from the seven of you. :)

I vote for entries that I enjoy and are well written. I have found myself with certain creeeeeeepy entries (from a couple of unnamed contestants ::cough cough::) reminding myself that even if I didn't like the way I FELT at the end of a story, the writer certainly gets points for making me feel that way.

Also been noticing the various fallback patterns and it's mega interesting. Plus, the entries seem to actually be getting stronger as they progress from A to B to C, which is kind of counterintuitive at first, since I'd think burn-out and\or insanity would set in and the C entries would pretty much be the equivalent of "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy" haphazardly C&P'ed all over the screen. Maybe it was working the opposite way? A = initial shellshock phase, and after that, the mad tea party is in full swing, so everyone's just letting stuff flow and not flailing about it as much, because hell, we're all mad here? Eeeenteresting.

I did notice a decrease in editing toward the end in some cases, but depending on the kind of editing it needed and the strength of the entry itself, it didn't necessarily cause a problem for the entry. :)

No, I'm not actually getting any reading done today. I can't imagine why. :)

Just heard from our Operation Write Home FB page that we lost 3 service members in Afghanistan today. It will probably only get five seconds on the news, if that.

OWH has made me so aware of who our service members are as people and how much they love and miss their families at home. Every time I hear about a loss, I feel connected, even though I don't know their names yet.

Date: 2012-08-10 07:46 pm (UTC)

That's just terrible :(

Sadly these people who give up so much, who miss their families and have people back home waiting on them, are just seen as statistics. More numbers. But to their loved ones... They are people. It always breaks my heart to think about what their families must be going through.

A friend of mine had a brother killed in the war. I remember the day she told us on LJ.... I'll never forget that as long as I live most likely.
