I went to see the Hunger Games this weekend. Having never read the books, and experienced the "controversy" (extremely ignorant people say things!!) I'm probably coming at this from an entirely different direction:

(1) Rue wasn't very well developed as a character. I've got to admit, that kinda ruined it for me.

(To be fair, no one outside the Big Two was. I assume they were in the book, and that the movie just hit the high points, trusting the audience to fill in the mental part)

(2) It made me wonder if there were any lawsuits from the Battle Royal folks (there were far more differences (IMO) between Tim Hunter and Harry Potter!

(3) I really liked the build up behind the scenes reality show aspects. It reminds me of some of the interviews that I've seen with previous Survivor players about the months leading up to them being "on the show".

(4) MY GUESS - knowing that this movie covers the first book, and there are two more - and since I'd imagine they'd want to use some of the characters again, that the next season is "All Stars" (or "All Winners" really, since that would be all that was left to go out there to do it again) Audiences love All Star seasons!

Anyway, in our own version of the Hunger Games, we have our own fair of adventure and speculation:
There are the new Topics: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/550720.html
and the Work Room to try to find yourself a PARTNER to work with: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/550964.html
[livejournal.com profile] the_day_setup jumped on the live grenade of being the "one who isn't picked", and will be seeing what happens to people who do silly things like that when the poll goes live.
What that means for YOU is that everyone else SHOULD HAVE A PARTNER!

IF you don't, let people know. Also, let me know and I will announce it, to make sure people who are still looking will know.

edit to add: There is an updated list here: http://jem0000000.livejournal.com/359598.html

Every time I see a GR in the middle of the night, I'm now taking that as my cue to go to bed because I've been up too long. Seriously, it's some kind of problem I have.

Still, as I have neither read nor seen the hunger games and am probably not gonna, I got nothing else to say and therefore may as well clear off anyway! :)

But perhaps you like different kinds of books? What do you like to read?

I've read the books and thought the movie did okay. There's a lot that was hard to translate because of the first person narration of the books, I thought, but it certainly wasn't the worst adaptation I've ever seen. ^_^

And I got sunburned this weekend while riding bikes with the hubby and watching my best friend's kids play soccer and t-ball. I had an alarming moment when I actually said out loud that I'd like to coach t-ball. Sanity kicked in and I immediately retracted the statement, but I'm still a little amazed I put that out there. Four-year olds in baseball uniforms with too-large shirts are pretty dang adorable, though . . .

I don't want to spoil the second book for anyone who hasn't read it, so I won't say anything about that. ;)

I has a partner! Is [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim. That's right. Be jealous. ;)

I have been hanging out with the spousal person and having fun, and discussing our story with my awesome partner. Also for some reason last night I stayed up until a bit after my husband got up to get ready for work. I then proceeded to sleep until after 3 p.m. So yeah. Didn't get quite as much done today as I was hoping.

But that's okay! I just took a Lortab (I had a slight twinge in the ulcer pain area, and as soon as I feel anything like the ulcer pain I KILL IT WITH FIRE!) so hopefully I'll be getting sleepy soon, and then I can get up at a decent time tomorrow and spend the whole day working on my entry. It definitely adds a level of "need to get this done" when someone else is depending on you.

Hmmm. Depends. Is it an all stars like the Hunger Games, where they all have to fight to the death? But, well - gosh, the only two people who ever gave me trouble in high school have since apologized, and there's only one person in my adult life who I feel sufficient anger towards to enlist him in such a thing.

He could go up against the ulcer! Yes! Manipulative Jerk vs Incredibly Painful Nearly Caused MM to Bleed to Death Ulcer! Now that's an All Star edition I'd like to see. :)

Not even commenting specifically on the Hunger Games movie (which I did enjoy quite a bit), I will say that my brain has a tendency to "fill in the blanks" when seeing book-to-film adaptations. It's like a weird automatic reflex thingie.

Also, it is after midnight here. Perhaps I ought to go to sleep so my brain can figure out how to write the story I've been planning with my partner. But will I sleep like a sensible person? No, probably not. :P

I haven't seen the movie yet, but have read the trilogy, so regarding your points:
1) The books were written from Katniss's POV so she didn't have much character depth to provide (though that doesn't necessarily excuse the film coming up short)
The "controversy" is bs, as the character was described as black in the books.
2) I've never read/seen Battle Royale, but have read a synopsis and while there are similarities, I'm not seeing a direct ripoff here. My thought when I first saw this was it was based on "Running Man" but King isn't upset (and he likes the books). The author claims the story was inspired by channel-surfing between reality TV and Iraq war coverage.
3) Glad to know they included that.
4) Are you SURE you didn't read the books? That's exactly what is done for the 75th Hunger Games.

I haven't read the books, and I probably won't see the movies. Not because I have anything against the theme of the story (I have heard a synopsis of at the first book), but because my life (as usual) is too frimpin' busy. And speaking of which:

The good news is that my Intersection partner and I seem to be happy with the direction we're going with our respective works. The bad news is that my work on Idol has been the only really constructive thing I did today -- I spent about half of the day in bed, exhausted. I'm not sick, though I am stressed as hell.

I really should be asleep already; it's 1 AM where I am, and I have quite a bit of things I need to do tomorrow.

I do intend to post another piece for my "Showmance Meltdown" thing in the next 24 hours, assuming folks are still interested -- most of the responses I got were while everybody was waiting for the Gatekeeper votes to come in. And while I was looking to help break the tension during the wait, I hope you folks are enjoying my attempt at humor on its own merits.

I'm afraid the next chapter of THE REAL LJ IDOL SEASON 8 SHOWMANCE MELTDOWN is going to be postponed.

Sorry folks, but I *REALLY* need to take the time to finish filing my income taxes tonight. Hopefully I'll be able to post the next chapter of the saga tomorrow night.

Anyway; let me try to get *SOME* sleep tonight. Later, all.

PS: My life, ALL STARS? Please, it is to laugh. I'm the guy who's spent most of his life emotionally hiding in a corner, wishing the world away. Who the hell would want to make a movie about that, much less watch one...

My life, All Stars? I'd play my self.

But if I couldn't, I need a manic pixie dream girl to play me because that's just how I am. Ridiculously optimistic to the point of being annoying? Check. Cutesy in the way I dress and do my hair? Check. Big eyes and young face? Check. Clumsy and always finding myself in ridiculous circumstances? Check and check.

I nominate Zooey Deschanel for personality, but Jayma Mays from Glee is probably my closest celebrity twin looks wise (I conducted a survey from my LJ friend's awhile back and that's what they came up with). Unless Zooey can pull off red hair....

I'm trying to wake up my intersection partner who's currently snoozing on me right now so we can write. Yes, we had an entire day together and just starting to write at 10:30 pm. But we have our idea and ready to roll once I wake him up.

I've only read the first Hunger Games book so far, although I've bought the other two. As far as character development of the other folks in the movie besides the "big two", the book had more family development and more scenes with Gale. As far as the other kids, most of them (with the exception of the longest-lived) didn't even have names - they were just sort of roadkill.

I think the movie did a great job with Haymitch and Cinna and that weird lady whose name I'm forgetting. There was additional scenes with the President, who really doesn't appear much at all in the first book, and all the added behind-the-scenes stuff in the control room, which of course aren't in the book at all since that's all from Katniss's viewpoint. I really liked both versions, although I do think it was helpful to have read the book first.

As far as what I've been doing this weekend: got our taxes done, did laundry, got my car washed, groceries, Facebook, a little reading, and about four hours spent in the ER with my friend, who was having very severe abdominal pains that she equated to the pain of childbirth. The hospital staff did a CT scan, and other than finding a hiatal hernia and some fibroids, have no real clue what was causing her such severe pain. It might've been gas, but if so that was the worst gas ever.

Well, it's late here, so I'm heading off to bed. G'night!

I finally have a partner, and I want to thank [livejournal.com profile] jem0000000 for doing up her intersection chart so other people won't be as gut-wrenchingly panicked as I was yesterday. Mind you, the people who had no choice but to listen to me probably thought I'd lost all sense of reality :headdesk:

Now to find the time to write my entry...

I finally got some sleep. Hallelujah!!!!! And no, I haven't seen nor read anything Hunger Games. I'm on the waiting list for the book at the library, though. I suspect it'll finally get around to me in 2015 :boggle:

As I wonder if the rain of shrapnel piercing through my abdominal flesh is really going to hurt much, or if I'll simply die from the shock and blood loss before I have a chance to feel anything... well, I just thought I'd like to offer my community participation in other ways. I am actually *sad* that I didn't get a chance to partner up with anyone this round. It just, uh, didn't work out that way.

So: If you and your pardner would like some outside feedback on your joint efforts, or would just like me to sit over here feeding you five or six ridiculous "inspirational" words or something, or would like me to try my newfound I Ching divination skills on you to help steer the direction of your entry (I got this great book at the thrift store!)... let me know somehow.

But do it fast... my Mondays are crazy, crazy busy from dawn til dusk, and then I'm apparently going to die.

You are a seriously nice person. Wish we could avail ourselves of the service offered. Hope Monday is not too manic.

I loved the books. I did not like the jerky filming on the movie.

I finally found a partner! Yay! xo_kizzy_xo and I are partners. It was the hardest time ever trying to find a partner this round.

I think with the Hunger Games you really needed to read the books. Rue and the stylist were developed much more in the book.

I am glad I read the books first too. There was a lot in my imagination that settled into what was on the screen.

Is it sad that I have NO clue what this Hunger Games thing is?? People keep talking about it but I just haven't had the time or interest in looking it up..doesn't help I haven't turned on a TV in over a month(I watch the news online).

I did come across an interesting TV show the other day online called South Beach Tow. For some odd reason the screaming, crying Jerry Springer like mentality, mixed with COPS like beat downs always makes me feel superior in my mental abilities. And darn it....it made me giggle.

Yesterday was a blur... got up early so that I could visit Taliesin West only to get halfway there when the phone rings and the store I am out here in AZ recruiting for ordered ten more people by Monday. YEAH...and BOOOO...what a way to make me work and ruin my free day. Good thing is I got everyone...now pray both my stores that I start today have everyone show-up for work. As for today I have about 150 phone calls to make and I have to pack...thank God it's for home for a week and then off to WY. The intersections are usually my favorite pieces every season...so I am really looking forward to reading them while enjoying a little down time at home. GOOD LUCK ALL!

Sorry you missed out on Taliesin West; it really was my favorite thing in the Phoenix area. Gave me great insight into Frank Lloyd Wright, both as an architect and a human being.

OTOH, you can always treat yourself and grab another meal at Rosita's Place before you leave town. Maybe even take something on the road with you...

PS: HUNGER GAMES THING -- Popular "Young Adult" book trilogy which came out in the last few years, set in a dystopian not-too-distant future where the central government have annual games which forces teenagers (ages 12-18) from the regions it controls to fight to the death. First book has just been turned into a movie, and there has been some fan backlash about the fact that several characters are portrayed by African-American actors and actresses... even though the books explicitly state that the characters in question have "brown skin" or "brown hair"...

Good morning, GR!

Okay, it feels weird to post when I'm no longer in the competition. Kinda like I can't hang with the cool kids any more. :(

'Sokay. Never stopped me in the past.

Casting for my life's version of All Stars depends largely on if I get to cast myself as myself...because that might mean some seriously difficult choices for casting of the spousebeast.

What? Y'all are saying you wouldn't buy Antonio Banderas as a 50something, under-tall, bespectacled Dane from Iredell County, NC?
