I'm applying for the PhD program in Linguistics at The CUNY Graduate Center. I have an MA in Applied Linguisitcs and, since I work for CUNY, the university will pay for two classes per term.

How about you? What's your specialty?

Oh how exciting! I'm looking at a PhD in Urban Planning from UCLA or perhaps Social Ecology with an emphasis in Urban Planning from University of California-Irvine. My masters is in Real Estate Development (which I'm writing about my grad program this week actually!) I really made a mistake there because this field is not for me, though I discovered I do love urban planning and community development, primarily looking at poverty, homelessness and inner city violence (the so called "ghettos"). My passion is in helping people.

I want to specialize in either language and technology or language planning and policy (what is taught, how we teach it, that sort of thing).

I;ve never taken the direct route to anything: in grad school, I was originally in the French Department, specializing in Indo-European and Romance Linguistics. Then I realized that there are no jobs in those fields.

So I switched to teaching ESL. I don't regret it for a minute.
