Date: 2011-01-14 02:48 pm (UTC)There were arguments about which signs to use, like, thousands of years ago and frankly, if you're going to suddenly start including Ophiucus, you need to include Pegasus and Draco and Corona Borealis and all the other signs in the secondary zodiac. Plus, there's always been the argument over whether the zodiac sign is supposed to be Serpens or Ophiucus and it annoys me that some random people who decided to write an article about something people already argued out (and I think very cogently, since I don't like Ptolemy's arguments for a 13-sign zodiac at all) a really long time ago and not explain the arguments for the other side.
What none of these articles are telling people is that the sun actually passes through Ophiucus twice in the course of the Earth's rotation, which adds even more confusion and is part of why it is a secondary sign and not a primary one.
Also, it's really important to astrological calculations to work with twelve signs, in order to create a system that has 360 degrees and is compatible with calculations down to the minute (since our clocks are based on a 60-60-24-360 numerical system). If you want to start adding secondary signs, there are around twenty other constellations that qualify for inclusion, so why the fuck are they picking Ophiucus out of a hat? Just tell people there are going to be 34 zodiac signs now!
And furthermore, no one's fucking horoscope can change. You need to find out what your zodiac sign is based on the precise star positions that existed at the minute of your birth, but if you know that, it doesn't actually change. Your zodiac sign is static. It might have been calculated wrong originally, but there is only one calculation for where the stars were when you were born.
So, yeah, I'm unreasonably annoyed about this bullshit.
