Good late morning/early afternoon!!

A special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kithan for keeping an eye on things this weekend and/or not banning everyone who didn't agree to send her bacon. Unless of course she did! I should probably go check that ban list. :P

Where was I? Glad you asked!

I was attending a family reunion in rural Ohio. How rural? The roads around the house have signs telling people to "travel at your own risk" and going out on the roads in better condition we ended up behind a Amish horse and buggy several times!

It was the first time my feet were on Ohio soil since the mid-80s!!

***

What have you folks been up to??? Hopefully the Top 3 have been writing their entries http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/372154.html considering that the deadline is Tonight!!

But what about the rest of you?

Have got three of my entries posted, and now you made me want bacon!

Of to cook some food, but alas, that delicious salty meat is not something I have in the fridge.

Ohio sounds like a great place, I love the countryside!

I posted some Haiku for the final topics in the Home Game thread. However, for ease of access the entry is here (http://roina-arwen.livejournal.com/1471228.html) :)

Mmmm... bacon! Breakfast this morning was cinnamon toast, so I could really use a rasher of bacon right now!

Tonight is our bowling league banquet potluck & awards. I think our team wound up in 3rd, which is pretty darn awesome! I made a batch of Chocolate Mint Crisp cookies for the potluck - yum. :)

Looking for some advice here... anyone know anything about caring for an abandoned kitten?

I took one in this morning, I have no idea how old it is, but it seems fairly young. It will lick replacement milk off my finger but I can't figure out how to get it to take the bottle. And i don't really know anything about caring for a young kitten, she is between 2-5 weeks is as close as I can guess.

You could always call the local shelter and ask them for advice. As far as the bottle, just keep trying - she'll get the hang of it eventually. Possibly the nipple is too large?

local shelter is not an option, it's just not that kind of place. i did call a rescue group and they told me where to go and what to buy for kitty to eat.

i am going to try an eye dropper next.

You can try a feeding bag/tube (and possibly fashion one yourself). It's a bit messier than a bottle but it will get the job done.

I usually take the animal to a vet for a quick look over, scrub it down with a good flea shampoo, and then get pictures and info to the nearest humane shelter for adoption. Very young kittens are often adopted out quickly.

I'm going to take her to a vet but it will be a couple days before i can get there. As for flea shampoo, can you use it on a young kitten?

Hmm, I know have used it on a kitten as young as five-six weeks, but she was covered in fleas and had a pretty severe infestation. Of course a regular feline shampoo with a good flea comb will do the same. If you're uncomfortable with the flea shampoo I'd suggest that route.

Gizmo wouldn't take the bottle the first couple of days that I had her. I gave her a bit of wet food, but she would only take it when I put it on my finger and sort of rubbed it around her mouth. Eventually I tricked her into taking the bottle - held her on her back in the crook of my arm so that she would meow, and then I kind of squirted some down her throat and prodded her with the nipple of the bottle until she clamped down on it. It took a few days of doing it that way before she seemed to get the hang of it and take the bottle regularly. At first, she would only drink in tiny spurts. Stressed me out!!

And I second [livejournal.com profile] beautyofgrey - get it to a vet for a check up ASAP if you can. The vet can give a deworming medication, check for any serious health problems, and give you advice on care, for about $50.

One other thought - make sure you keep the kitten really warm. At that young of an age, they expend all their energy in eating and growing, and they don't have the metabolism to heat their own bodies. Since this kitten isn't with its mom or its littermates, it'll need another heat source. Ideally, they should be kept at temperatures in the high 70s or low 80s. You can accomplish this with blankets - no need to crank up the heater.

And of course, one other important thing to know about kitten rescue - WE ALL NEED TO SEE PICTURES. This is possibly the most important thing to remember!

I took pictures already, but have yet to upload them. I did put her in a box with a flat, fluffy stuffed animal covering the bottom. She seems to like it. It is fairly warm here so that should be fine, at least for a little while.

I will keep trying the bottle, and find an eye dropper, someone suggested that.

Did you use a special bottle, or a regular one? I have a special animal one but it came with three different nipples and I'm not sure which one to use.

Mmm...bacon.

Family reunions are a feast for storytelling. Unfortunately, I missed ours this summer, which means I've got to wait three years until the next one.

I posted my last Idol thoughts (http://fourzoas.livejournal.com/145854.html) last night; they contain something of a farewell, although I hate saying goodbye.

We have signs not far from my house the warn of horse and buggy crossings. I have yet to see one....but I know they have them more in central MO than here.

I am BUSY. I am trying to get everything together and hopefully ready to move across the country by THIS weekend. I have hardly anything ready and it's scary. Trying to secure a place to live and stuff today. Also trying to figure out how to get my stuff there, that's the hard part.

Other than that, things are good here! Just really frantic at the moment (yet I still find time to check in on the GR of course!)

Been feeling a bit ick. I think it might be because I'm in higher temperatures and humidity than I've grown accustomed to in Maine... combined with lower air quality. Blah.

But I'm feeling a little better than I was yesterday, which is good. Maybe getting acclimated.

In good things, I've been getting lots of kitty snuggles. And soon will get some lunch.

I've been playing around with strawberries (http://xo-kizzy-xo.livejournal.com/1029052.html).

Today is my last day of vacation. From what little I was told when I called to get my schedule, I don't know whether to laugh or weep with what's going on there :/

Too bad you missed Cincinnati, Gary.

In other news:
Sunny here. Paid some bills, cleaned off kitchen counters and caught up on FB and a couple other on line places. I found two of my dad's cousins recently. Through them, I found that I am distantly related to one of my high school classmates on FaceBook! Small world indeed.

I am impressed at how much you wrote while I was sleeping! If I hadn't have written sonnets this week, there's no way I'd have been able to write on all four topics.

I have a feeling that if there is a next season, it's going to be quite different. Maybe even new tie-breaker topics!

Well I look forward to seeing what happens next time, seeing as this has been the only season I've been part of :D
