You know those times when you wake up in the morning and it's one just piece of irritating news after the other, when the people around you want to make *everything* about them (because they are obviously "special" *rolls eyes*) and you just really want the day to go away?

Yeah. That's today for me.

Can we just skip it?

***

The one good piece of news is that the polls are up, and the Champions are fighting for the lives of their principals: http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/364559.html

So that's lots of good things to read this weekend!!

***

So what are you doing with my share of today?

I just made some garlicbread. Would you like some to make your day better?

Garlic bread is, indeed, a cure to many bad things a day can bring. Especially with a little grated parmesan.

Had I known it was coming, I'd have been looking forward to it. It has made a world of difference for me. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to "bow out" in a more mindful and literary way. :)

Meta of the Day?

I'm curious: how much is having the champion's entry linked in the poll going to change the way you vote?

My first reaction to the twist was, "what an AWESOME idea!" Not even so much from a participant's perspective, but just out of an appreciation for how clever the twist was.

But now I've been thinking about it more, and I know that I'm personally going to be reading all 16 entries and will probably be deciding who I'm going to vote for based at least as much on the actual contestant's entry as on the champion's entry. For me, the contestant's entry is going to matter at least as much as the champion's entry, even if the champion is the one linked in the poll. So... does that make this twist less twisty than I first thought?

I'm interested in people's thoughts. :)

I'm an evil bastard and have only so far read the champion entries and voted off of them.

Why? I don't know. Because I've said in the past that each week my criteria are abritrary and based on whim, and it seemed as good an approach as any.

Also, I didn't want to deal with delayed gratification (in terms of ticking boxes) and didn't have the time to read all 16 entries.

It's interesting; I posted the above comment before I had read or voted. I think in practice I ended up putting more weight on whichever of the two pieces in each pairing that I liked better!

As a champion myself, when I do get to read all the entries, I know I am going to take the contestants writing into account.

Why? Because in my case, I know my partner had wrote something amazing and I know my entry seriously does not stand on it's own merits this late in the game. I figure other partnerships could be the same (I am not hinting at anyone in particular, I haven't read a single entry yet to even make that assumption about anyone else).

I just hope more people do that since it's rough being on this side of the partnership. Seriously rough knowing your entry could take someone else out.

Personally both entries will factor in to my voting, but I will (probably) give more weight to the Champion's entry because I think the idea rocks so hard! :)

I think for me it will depend on the entries in question. Some people did pairings that are meant to intersect, and I feel like it's harder to vote for those without considering the still-competing player's entry. Because even if you are just voting for the Champion's entry, their ability to intersect with their partner is part of the awesomeness of the entry. With people whose entries are less-dependent on each other, it's easier to divide the two and vote on one individually. But I haven't read through everyone yet (I've read some) so I'm not sure.

I must admit that every time there's been an intersection in the past, although I loved the way that people intertwined, if the pieces weren't *also* standalone, they'd have to be something truly special to get me to vote for them. So, for example, I know that Joey and my entries were a little bit of a risk in that they are an homage to the Three Investigators/Hardy Boys/Encyclopaedia Brown books and if you aren't familiar with that genre, a lot of the jokes might not make as much sense and I do think that you get more out of them if you read both, but at the same time, they are both self contained pieces and if someone only has time to read one (which, of course, should be Joey's), then hopefully, they'll still see what we were doing.

Oh, that is interesting, because I've always taken the opposite approach to judging intersections. I tend to consider the way the pieces intersect as an important part of the intersection entries, and definitely judge them on that. If they're *too* standalone, I don't tend to rate them as highly.

And that doesn't mean they can't be standalone! I haven't gotten to yours yet, but I think a good example this week is [livejournal.com profile] alephz and [livejournal.com profile] rattsu. Their entries are totally and completely readable as standalone but I still feel like they intersect well. But if entries really work hard to intersect and part of the intersection means not standing alone, I give those folks a lot of credit for really working together with their partner. And I think my own decisions about how to intersect people reflect that those are the intersections I find most interesting!

Alephz and Rattsu are a classic example of what I mean. The entries don't have to be read in a particular order but they are intertwined while both being standalone. The pair of intersections I remember the most earlier were from (I think) Viagra and someone where they had the same first and last paragraph and did their own thing in between. I absolutely loved that because the pieces were completely standalone but you could see how they'd worked together as well.

For me, it all came down to the success of the intersection itself and to the strength of both pieces. Since the remaining contestants are all strong in their own ways, the choice of champion--and the place and execution of the collaboration--played a large role in my voting.

I just went out on a limb and wrote up my impressions of the entries in the polls this week. And my impressions of the pairings themselves. The limb part being that I talked about what did and didn't work for me. But, I hope that I did a good job of presenting everything as personal taste and opinion. If you're interested it's here (http://cacophonesque.livejournal.com/291571.html).

Later today I will be hanging out with a friend I haven't seen in about a month and a half. We're going to eat a vegetarian feast, watch some old movies, and maybe mix a few drinks. Should be good times.

Sandi's baking 13 dozen cupcakes for a wedding. Then we're going to deliver said cupcakes, go running, and sit in bed together and watch season 3 of The Biggest Loser. :)

We are BL fanatics. We've been doing pretty well with exercise, and part of that involves Bob and Jillian's DVDs. The other part of it is while we're running we go "if THEY can do it, we can do it."

Not doing much of anything honestly. It's way too hot outside to get me motivated to leave the house. My soon to be ex husband is out of town, my roomies either got up super early and left before I woke up (doubtful) or they are having tons of fun in their bedroom together (they are a couple after all).

So I'm not sure what the day will bring. It very well could be a lazy day reading LJ and chatting on Yahoo...

Pathetic, huh? I need one of those things everyone keeps talking about. Yeah, I need a life :P

Got up a little earlier than intended today and had breakfast with the spousal unit at Cracker Barrel, then we went to see Despicable Me in 3D, which was pretty damn funny! There's even an iPhone app (which hubby downloaded) to interpret the minions' speech (they have their own language) during the end credits - too cool!
