Green Room - Week 11 - Day 3
Jan. 21st, 2010 09:13 amYesterday there was a thread about constructive criticism. Before that there was a discussion on what people felt Idol was and/or was not about. Somewhere in there was a history of Idol where the people involved probably got half the facts wrong (each). ;)
What will come up today?
My bet is on "Is Idol crunchy in milk?" Either that or "The Continued Adventures of Max" told in serial form in a comment thread!

The new topic thread is at http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/292164.html
for those of you not currently in the lineup, but want to submit (or read) Home Game entries: http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/292544.html

Date: 2010-01-21 02:27 pm (UTC)I have a meeting in five minutes! I am beginning a new habit called "eating breakfast." We will see how long I can keep this one up!
I have a huge honking stack of submissions to read today that have been piling up this week, and some new tee shirts to design!
Also, I have been really enjoying these discussions! I feel a little bad though because there were a few comments about negativity yesterday and I hope people aren't feeling like these discussions are too negative. Everything has been really friendly and receptive even when they're being critical so I thought they were cool!

Date: 2010-01-21 02:36 pm (UTC)Constructive criticism definitely has its place. My feeling is that 1) it shouldn't be unsolicited, and 2) if you're going to criticize, be specific. A general "I just don't like this piece" or "I don't like how you write" doesn't cut it with me -- SHOW me why.
Have a good meeting!

And I look forward to seeing you in two days. :)

I have a dentists appointment today to get my LAST FILLING done at 11am. Wish me luck! x.x

Date: 2010-01-21 02:35 pm (UTC)Well, yes and no. I know I'm not the only one who votes in part based on whether I felt the entry actually was on topic. If I didn't feel it was very good, or if I adored it but didn't think it was on topic, I won't be voting for it.
I love hearing what works and doesn't, and I was tickled pink when I actually got some responses in that vein when I last posted fiction, but that doesn't mean everyone likes something they worked hard on picked apart.
My participation is primarily because I like writing prompts and reading stuff I wouldn't otherwise encounter, not to improve my writing as such.

Date: 2010-01-21 02:32 pm (UTC)Other than that, I had a WAY TMI vaginal ultrasound today. I probably shouldn't provide the details...
Lunch, on the other hand, was some delicious honey chicken and fried rice. I am eating about every couple of hours these days for reasons that could be explained by the third section of my Idol post this week. Funnily enough, despite eating more, I have not gained any weight. This pleases me. And I need some positive things to focus on after all the crap I've been dealing with lately.

Date: 2010-01-21 03:19 pm (UTC)There's a school of dieting thought that recommends eating several small meals throughout the day -- "stoking the fire", if you will. My issue is that I'm usually not hungry enough to even think of eating a regular meal, never mind several mini meals.

To continue on a theme from yesterday:
"Do you think Death could possibly be a boat?"

What is your favorite part of the writing process?
How would you describe your writing style? What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What drew you to start competing in
How often do you read other people's entries?
What do you look for an an entry you read?
What's your biggest pet-peeve in LJI entries?
What's the best review/critique you have ever received on an LJI entry?
What is your favorite LJ Idol entry you've written so far and why?

Date: 2010-01-21 02:43 pm (UTC)I can't answer all of these right now but my favorite entry was one I wrote last season about postpartum depression. I liked it because...I had never ever mentioned it before so it freed my soul in so many other ways to mention that it happened, how I felt and to have so so so many other women say, "I felt the same way."
Part of me healed that had been concealed for so long.

Date: 2010-01-21 02:40 pm (UTC)I'm very particular about my cereal. I need the milk to be super cold (I'm like this about milk anyway), and I have to eat it quickly before the cereal gets mushy. Which is why I like Honey Nut Cheerios, they don't mush as quickly as other cereals.

I didn't get a chance to chime in yesterday but, for the record, I appreciate constructive criticism. My goal is to improve my writing and from ANY feedback, I learn something, even if you hated an entry.
I realize I have a lot of polishing I need to do as a writer, I haven't evolved into what I need to be so suggestions on how to change, ways to shift what I am writing into something better, things to avoid, knowing the parts/entries that bore the heck out of people etc. I won't get better (probably) if I only get compliments (though, like everyone, those are nice too:)
Comments are helpful, whether in praise or criticizing, telling me how to do better, what they think I should change, etc.

Date: 2010-01-21 02:43 pm (UTC)I am at work and getting ready to head home. The only reason I came in this morning is because we had a mandatory meeting first thing and if I didn't they would probably say I was trying to avoid it.
Meeting went okay, but I think I will return to shivering in my blankets at home. Just found out a few minutes ago that one of the clients I saw yesterday has been placed in isolation for possible swine flu. Joy. Guess what I might have?

Date: 2010-01-21 02:44 pm (UTC)That discussion about constructive criticism yesterday was great. I followed it all day, since I tend to be blunt when I critique something and thus don't unless I am sure it is something someone wants me to do for them.
My night finished with a "Happy Ending" last night. How about yours?

Date: 2010-01-21 03:16 pm (UTC)I had a good idea for my entry this week (on Monday, even!), but every time I sit down to write it, it just comes out in a completely different way than I imagined. This is because this topic has unwittingly opened an emotional can of worms from the last decade and I can't even process it all at once. AGH!
Which reminds me, for all you people out there who claim your writing is "effortless".....pffftttththtththththtththt on you. ;) (I envy you.)

I've gotten my entry written and posted as of yesterday, whee! I feel good for getting it done rather early (at least for me, I think I was about the 25th to post) - leaves me more time for reading!!

Date: 2010-01-21 03:54 pm (UTC)I am getting ready for work. Need to leave in 30 minutes. Thankfully Julia likes to sleep in, so it gives me some time to myself in the mornings. I enjoy eating breakfast and showering in peace :)
I work 930-5 and was supposed to go to my boyfriend's house after, but due to the rain we've postponed it until Saturday night.
Man, torrential downpours here, really. It's flooded everywhere. I'm going to have a tough time getting to work, I think.

I have a very slow workday tomorrow, so I'm going to read a bunch of entries and try to tell you all how much I love you. :)

Date: 2010-01-21 06:20 pm (UTC)I hope Idol doesn't get soggy in milk... I don't do soggy... the texture just makes me heave. :-)
Enjoying my PB&J sammich in my cubicle whilst making my mental to-do list before I head out on the high seas tomorrow... It's alarmingly lengthy. Yikes!
Also waiting for the day's deluge to hit us. The worst of the storm systems is supposed to be passing through any minute now... bring on the thunder and lightning, baby!!!

(Should be a minor procedure.) It's funny - so much else has been going on the part where today is my birthday is something I keep forgetting.
