I've been thinking about this alot and wondered if people want to talk about constructive criticism? I mean I have seen:

-people complain that they wish they received more of it
-people complain that they left constructive criticism and the other person did not respond to it.
-people complain that they left it and the other person didn't agree/or follow it
-people disagree over what is constructive criticism versus what is just plain negativity.

But maybe instead of just complaining about these things, we could talk about them. I understand everyone has different opinions, me for example, I don't like criticism in my journal especially from people I don't know. I am fine with receiving it off journal, although I don't seek it out in ljidol. When i want the opinion of someone who's writing/editing skills I respect I simply ask them. But that's me. We all have our own way.

How do you feel about constructive criticism? Do you think it has a place in idol? What do you think that place is?

I appreciate constructive criticism and usually include a sentence at the bottom of my post along the lines of "constructive criticism and feedback are welcomed."

Part of my reasons for participating include attempting to become a stronger writer. I don't think that I can do that on my own, without feedback. So, please, feel free to tell me what you love and/or hate about my pieces - I want to know what works for you and what falls flat (and why).

On the "why"... constructive criticism is not intended to belittle, tear down, or completely lambast a piece of writing simply because the reader doesn't like it - the word "constructive" would indicate that advice is offered, or that an explanation is given for the weaknesses of the piece. When I offer constructive criticism, I almost always try to include positive attributes/strengths of the post, as well.

Did not accomplish as much as I wanted to last night when I went home. But I did make a list of things to do, which makes me feel a bit more focused. Forgot to put "Write my Idol post" on it, though. Whoopsie.

And back to overtime tonight. Ugh.

Been listening to Maine Public Radio while I'm at work, which is pretty awesome, because I like news and classical music and all that--but everytime they do the weather forecast I get confused. Although I wish that shows like "Thistle and Shamrock," "A Prairie Home Companion," "Car Talk," and "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" were weekday shows!

You have been getting so much snow up in Maine! I've been listening to the weather on Maine Public Radio. It's insane. And I got to experience the Monday storm, myself (was worried that I might not get back to the city that day, which would have put me in big trouble at work).

Congrats on the snow day! I could use a snow cancellation at work, but that's unlikely to happen.

It's been fun getting myself into reading the entries again since I wasn't able to read much while I was in Europe. Commenting will be sparse, though, since I'd rather try and read all the entries this week now that we're down to a number I know I was able to read in the first few weeks. :D

Mornin' Folks...

Waiting to see what Mother Nature has in store for us today. We've had a series of storms lined up all week and the worst two are supposed to hit today and tomorrow... widespread flooding and mudslides here. We also had some tornadoes here in So Cali yesterday! We had them touch down here in Long Beach and Huntington that I know of... there were reports of others in other cities along the coast as well. I was stuck in my cubicle and didn't get to see them. Which is a bum out. I have a dream of going tornado chasing... I just never thought I'd be able to do it here!

So we're battening down the hatches and waiting for the deluge... and counting down minutes until I get to go on my cruise. Woooo Hoooo!

We're halfway through the fiscal year, so what better time for our finance office to finally give my department a budget. I was pleased to see that it was the same number as last year and that they've known it was that number since, well, the beginning of the fiscal year. No idea why they couldn't have told me that when they knew it. I don't understand finance one bit.

Had a tree fall on our house. We are just fine though. The weather is frightful outside. High winds, rain flying at us from an angle rather then straight down. UGH! Starting to wonder what state this is after all. Guess winter really arrived.
