Oh hey, it's you. I was wondering what that noise was.

What is that you are doing? Um. . . should you really be doing that without any sort of precautions? Well, OK, I guess, if that's what makes you happy. . .

So anyway - how is your weekend going so far?

Pissed off. The public school system in South Korea is fucked up. I will never complain about the American education system again.

I could write a rather large essay on this, but I'll just bullet point the flaws to save time:

  • Very poorly organized

  • Poor treatment of employees

  • Lack of a special education system

  • Poor disciplinary measures for students

  • Overuse of standardized tests

  • Overworking students

  • Horribly mismanaged government funds

There's a lot more to it than this and the reason for these problems go deeper than you think. Some of the problems set in the system are cultural and thus much harder to fix.

Have you considered changing jobs to work in an English teaching business instead? I'm sure they have a lot of those in Korea as well. I worked in a family business English school and I'm not sure how I'd like it working in the public schools sector....

Can't. I'm under contract. Breaking the contract requires a 1.3 million won buyout (about $1,200 US). Plus, I only have about 3 months teaching left on my current deal. Then, I could sign on to another job.

Oh ok. Yeah the Japanese never take breaking contracts seriously. English teachers do that all the time and I have never, ever heard of the teachers being fined for it. Guess you'll just have to put up with the final 3 months before you switch to a better job.As the Japanese say- ganbatte : ).

Wow. Will you be returning to the states anytime soon?

Well, I'll be returning temporarily around New Years and then again in March 2010, which is when my contract is up. I plan to stay in America for a few months. With my father no longer with us, my mother has been living alone. So, I can get a TESOL or TEFL while I'm keeping my mother company.
