Call for Submissions

Have you been a contestant in the Real LJ Idol? Have you ever read an entry and thought that it was so amazing, it should be in print?

Well now it’s going to happen. Fae Publishing is putting together the very first anthology of the best entries from the first five seasons of the Real LJ Idol. Official submission or home game entry, it doesn’t matter, as long as you think it’s good enough to be in print and it was linked to one of the official LJ Idol threads during the course of the competition.

Feel free to suggest entries that are not your own but you thought were outstanding, but be aware that nothing will be published without the author’s consent. There is no limit to how many entries any one contestant can submit or will be included – all we care about is that they’re a darned good read.

It is up to the author to decide whether they wish to publish under their LJ handle, real name or a nom de plume. Authors retain copyright and will receive a complimentary copy of the book in recognition of their hard work (one book per author, not per entry included). In addition, all contributors will be asked to submit two further entries, brand new for the book, one an ‘open topic’ entry and one from the list of prompts supplied by Gary. We will then choose the best of these to include in a bonus round of previously unpublished work exclusive to the book, which will also feature an interview with our very own Gary.

So is this 2 or 3 entries total? or just one and then publisher will decide if two more's needed?

There is no limit on how many entries will be accepted. It all depends on quality of submissions and how the anthology pans out, so what will fit better. Then on top of that, anyone accepted will be asked for the additional entries (Open and a topic provided by Gary), inclusion of which will, again, be subject to discretion.

So basically, go back to your submissions, pick out the ones that you think are absolutely brilliant and email them over. I would prefer it if people were honest with themselves and only picked their very best, ones that they think really do deserve to be in print. Looking at my own entries, for example, there are only a couple that I think are print ready.

So who is making the decision as to which are the best entries, or best ones out of those submitted?

The publisher. I.e. me. Basically, I'll read everything submitted, whether it's your own work or a recommendation and decide from that what will make the best anthology. It might mean that an amazing entry won't make it in if it doesn't fit an overall theme, so no one should be offended if some of their submissions don't make it.

I don't have the time to go through every single entrant's LJ to decide what I think is the best and besides, I'm open to suggestion - I may well miss a gem. So if you want something to be included, email it over and I'll take it from there. There is no limit to how many will be accepted (although obviously, I want a balance of contributors!), likewise no guarantee that anything will be included. I need to see what people send over before I can make any kind of decision.

Theme depends on submissions. It's most likely going to be separated into sections based on mood rather than prompts. I want a broad mix.
