Nope. The surprise isn't in this entry.

That's coming later today!

([livejournal.com profile] puppetmaker40, make sure to check which hand people are voting with.*g*)

***

Any entries that have stood out to you this week?

***

A couple things [livejournal.com profile] gabeuscorpus said to me yesterday, the first was about Big Dog. I'm sure you've seen this, but for those who haven't:

http://gizmodo.com/368651/new-video-of-bigdog-quadruped-robot-is-so-stunning-its-spooky

(for those who can't see it, it's Boston Dynamic's robot in action.)

He also asked an unrelated question that I considered putting out there as a free topic, I figure it's just as good asking it here:

"Do you have any songs that are such powerful reminders of a particular memory that the song is almost bittersweet, and almost difficult to listen to, because it aches deep in your chest?"

***

Nothing more to say, just felt like making another line there!*g*

Have a wonderful day, and I'll see you later at the polls!

Happy Friday...

I would have to say Nobody Does it Better by Carly Simon.

As for songs...I have plenty of songs which evoke all sorts of memories, but the one that causes the most ache is...no, not Frank Sinatra's, but the other version...of "Fly Me To The Moon". My dad used to sing it to me all time and nobody's ever sung it to me since.

You're going to throw in a twist on a day where I'm going to be on my way to the airport when the voting post goes up? Sooooooo not awesome.

As for your question, I couldn't even begin to narrow it down to just one song that carries the most emotional resonance for me. But I can at least start with Weezer's 'Island in the Sun,' and U2's 'Electrical Storm.'

P.S. Why am I going to be on my way to the airport when the voting post goes up? Because I'm visiting [livejournal.com profile] tulip_in_yellow this weekend!

ETA: Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] welfy, here's the video for 'Electrical Storm.' Gorgeous, overlooked song in U2's catalog.

5:55 by Charlotte Gainsbourg puts me in a horribly depressed mood when I hear it. The lyrics and the couple in the video remind me of a wrong-from-the-beginning relationship I had with someone last year. He used to wake up and leave my house at 5:55 because he knew I "liked this song." And I do like it. But it's sad.

can i begin another day
whilst this old day is still alive
refusing to be put away"

And, were they referring to one of US?

I usually read most of the entries all in one day. I guess today's the day.

I can't think of any songs right now that are bittersweet lately. I have been posting a poll every day for the past couple of weeks regarding public lists of the worst records of all time, so those songs (as well as the ones on my Heavy Rotation list on my iPod) are the ones that are on my mind right now.

Good morning. Glorious cool spring morning here. And even more glorious is not having to go to work! I'm off to the Boston area later today! Friends, food, fun. Who could ask for a better weekend?

As for a song that makes me sad. "The River" by Springsteen. If you remember my entry about my friend Doug who passed away several years ago, well, that is a song that reminds me of him and every time I hear it I miss him terribly. He bought me the vinyl album and it sits in my cabinet to this day even though I've replaced it on CD.

Music is like a drug for me. I take a couple shots of Green Day or White Stripes when I am feeling really down (and I remember I can do this). I can listen to the soundtrack of Sweeney Todd when I am pissed off. Even better, I can pull out some classical music such as Ride of the Valkyries or the Four Seasons.

For an absolute gut makes-me-cry-every-time... the four orchestral pieces from the City of Angels soundtrack. My older son was in high school band. In his last season, the band director decided to go out on a limb and use that music instead of the typical band fare. I was a band mom, and I am tearing up even as I write this. The kids worked so hard; the presentation was beautiful. They won the state championship. The reason it was my son's last year? I found out after it was all over... he had marched the entire year with a painful ingrown toenail and never told a soul, because he didn't want to risk a problem for the band.

There are lots of other songs from when I was younger, but this music is the dearest to my heart.

How about the Fray "How to Save a Life" that was written after the lead singer's good friend committed suicide and he wrote a song about how he wish he could have done something about it. The bar is only raised if you see the "Scrubs" episode that it was used in.

My house is a Stairway-Free Zone. I don't care if it comes on the radio, because, whatever. But if anyone want to *play* it, especially on an acoustic guitar, they must be stopped. It's just too much of a reminder of one bittersweet summer and one particular person.

I'm pretty sure I wrote an entry (http://unsold-capacity.livejournal.com/249379.html) about a song that fits that description for me. Good thing I did, too, or I'd have to write a lack-luster comment about one of the most powerful emotional periods of my life :p

My life has a soundtrack. It seems like every major memory, good and bad, has a song I associate with it.

Some major ones though are Mazzy Star's Fade Into You,(song that we played for our first dance when we got married on a cliff in Sedona) Sara McLaughlin's In the Arms of the Angel (came on the radio in the car as I was literally hitting rock bottom in 1999) and Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful, which was the song shared by my gramma and I.
