And since I said that I would "reveal the Gatekeepers after the results", and I know that some of them have been waiting anxiously to talk about why they made their individual decisions that resulted in these group outcomes:
A special thank you to our Gatekeepers, who did a job that was pretty much impossible, picking the best in THAT group. Thank you for your time, and your effort.
As was pretty much immediately predicted: Thank you to our previous winners:
tinhuviel (who due to real life circumstances was not able to make the deadline, but was reading),
tru2myart and
welfy people who have proven their worth time and time again.
The fourth gatekeeper was the "biggest threat" of this season, the respected and sometimes feared*g*:
rm
The "alternate" gatekeeper, who helped more than she knows, is the one and only
bettybaker (last season's second place).
Congratulations.

Date: 2008-03-31 05:50 pm (UTC)First of all, hi! If you haven't met me yet, feel free to drop by my journal to take a peek, sign the guest book, and recommend some good reading.
When I competed in this contest last season, I learned firsthand what a wild emotional ride LJ Idol puts a person through. To those who were eliminated this week, I know how much it can hurt. To those who have survived to compete in the next round, congratulations!
My evaluation happened in two parts:
First, the writing.
I read each entry and examined it on seven levels:
1. grammar/spelling
2. narrative style
3. thesis (present? yes/no)
4. supporting evidence
5. perceived effort
6. structure
7. creativity
Second, the comment culture.
It can be argued that the worth of LJ lies in its potential to be a meaningful interactive forum. My LJ Idol is someone who provides a healthy breeding ground for conversation in the comments section. So I checked: how did people respond to the entry? Did it provoke discussion? Was there a massive response? Did the writer chat with his or readers?
As has been talked to death in the past, this isn't just a writing competition. It's a blogging competition, and blogging is much more than crafting polished essays--it's a whole skill unto itself.
Did the voting go my way? For the most part. A few of the people on my top twenty list didn't make it onto the overall top twenty list. Will I talk to you about your scores? No. Will I debate my judging technique with you? No, but I felt I owed it to you to show you how I came to my conclusions. Do I feel your joy and pain? Oh my goodness yes.
Finally, I saw some writing of jaw-dropping quality this round. I was privileged to read it and I was honored to be a Gatekeeper.

I think you all deserve a fun topic this week, so get out there and play with those gadgets! *g*
I will be reacquainting myself with my favorite gadget, otherwise my Home Game entry won't do it justice. :-)

Date: 2008-03-31 11:04 pm (UTC)I want to say that while I might be very alone in this, I liked this aspect of judging. I think it takes a lot of strain off to write for anonymous judges. And also, not knowing who the audience is combined with an open topic really allowed us to step out and just write for ourselves. That's how I viewed it. I really liked it.
