Good luck on the story... add superflous words and unneeded scenes of filler if need be. They do it all the time. "They" are writers.

I’m also having a feline issue. My cat keeps trying to lay on my laptop… she doesn’t like it taking up my lap!

That's fine for a school paper but if one is writing a story they hope will showcase the quality of their writing this sounds like a terrible idea. I'd rather suggest adding in scenes that add depth to characters or even better more nuance and added levels to the story.
