What is Survivor: LJ Idol?
This is a special event for the LJ Idol community, combining an excuse to write with the strategy of the reality competition show Survivor. It’s an idea that has been pitched to me a number of times over the years - but this time when it was pitched, I understood how to make it work! :)
It is designed for 16-32 contestants. 32 is the maximum head count.
In an effort to keep those numbers down, there is a $10 donation to participate. (All Patrons regardless of level, of at least two months, are guaranteed a spot should they wish to take part. Their fee is waved)
Survivor rules:
Contestants will start off on two to three tribes, depending on the amount of contestants. (A tribe being a group of contestants who participate together for a shared goal) The method of selecting tribes will be announced on Day 1 of this event.
At some point during the competition, these tribes will be “swapped” (where members move to another tribe) and ultimately merged into one tribe.
During the pre-merge period, contestants will compete as tribes for “tribal immunity” by writing entries. There will be a poll posted in the community.. The total average votes for all contestants will be used to determine which tribe wins immunity. (If someone misses a deadline, they will be counted has having 0 votes)
The tribe(s) that do not receive immunity will go to Tribal Council. Tribal Council discussions will occur in a public forum, but any comments from non-participants will be deleted. For our purposes tribal council voting means that each member of the tribe will be sending their vote to me via email (clauderainsrm@gmail.com) of the 1 person they wish to eliminate from their tribe. The contestant who receives the most votes for elimination will be “voted off the island” In the case of a tie, we will follow Survivor rules on revotes.
To encourage people to stick around to the end - All participants are automatically a part of the Jury and anyone voted off pre-merge will be part of the Edge of Extinction, where they will wait for a chance to return to the game!
The Merge will occur when there are between 10-12 contestants remaining in the game.
After the Merge, contestants will continue to write entries - but this time for individual immunity! The person with the most votes will be safe that week. This will continue until the finale.
At the finale, all contestants from the season will cast a vote, via email, for THE WINNER. (The Sole Survivor)
Potential twists are all from the US and International Survivor seasons and/or “Survivor think-tanks” (where fans have come up with ideas to pitch for the show) - with adaptations for an Idol/online version.
Idol Housekeeping
Writing will be done for the purpose of immunity only.
Weeks do not count toward “survived weeks” count due to no one being eliminated from the poll.
Missing deadline does not involve byes or elimination in the pre-merge. Instead, it’s counted as having received 0 votes for immunity. Post-merge it’s counted as a “medevac”
As always, a “week” might not be a regular calendar week. In fact, it’s probably better to assume that it won’t be.

Date: 2020-10-06 12:37 pm (UTC)Ties have been handled different in different eras of Survivor, and there are some twists from International Survivor that aren't true of the US. I'm still in the process of finalizing what the final product is going to look like.

Date: 2020-10-09 07:17 pm (UTC)In case of a tie vote at tribal council - those tied with get a chance to plead their case one more time. At which point there will be another vote where people can ONLY vote for one of those who tied.
If it remains tied, then those people become immune, and the remaining tribe members will be forced to draw rocks, leaving it up to random chance.
How that will work virtually is that the names of the contestants will go into a "random name picker" https://miniwebtool.com/random-name-picker/ and the name that is generated will be eliminated.
In Survivor, "going to rocks" is a huge risk that not many people want to take, so it forces someone to flip, or take a chance that they will be eliminated. We will see how that works here!
That changes at the final 4, but we will address it when it comes.

Date: 2020-10-06 04:18 pm (UTC)If there is a tie for individual immunity, can it go to more than one person or are there tie-breakers for that too?

Date: 2020-10-18 03:35 am (UTC)I've called this a "special event", rather than a "mini season" or anything else, for a good reason. It's not Idol. But rather "Idol related."
Idol is a writing competition with elements borrowed from reality shows. Survivor: LJ Idol is Survivor, with one element borrowed from the writing competition - instead of physical challenges, people will be writing entries. So yeah, it's "not a writing competition", it's a competition that just happens to have some writing involved.
Everything else is Survivor though.
Which isn't for everyone. But it was on the list of things people have been requesting, and that's the plan - to do some of those things in the lead up to celebrating our 15th year! There are some different ideas that will be coming to life in a next year - one of those might even seem familiar to you! :)

Date: 2020-10-18 04:57 am (UTC)Hopefully it's going to be as fun for people to watch as it is for those participating! (and certainly a whole lot less stressful! :D)

Date: 2020-10-18 05:10 am (UTC)The winners of the challenges will be determined by the results of that poll.
The losers will be voting off one of their own.
