I know it's not as exciting as Notre-Dame's Cathedral being on fire - but the Idol final 5 is going to leave even more destroyed in it's wake! (because fortunately most of the art had already been moved. Whereas your art is still inside of you!!)

I'm afraid that, at the end of the mini-season, all my "art" is behind me. This isn't just about talent, but about stamina, and frequently life. Too often life, in the form of illness, work, family, or other issues causes a writer to have to drop out. Sometimes, for that one week, writers get stymied by a topic and write that lone bad entry. As we get near the end, it is worth remembering all those who fell along the way.

That tends to be the case with professional writers making deadlines as well. They have to figure out how to work through that pressure, that "life happening". It involves talent, but it also is about stamina, sheer stubbornness and more than a little luck to succeed.

There is a difference, though, between a professional writer who has an established non-fiction voice writing to a deadline within the parameters of a subject much denser than a single-word prompt and writers who have jobs and obligations writing creatively on a deadline to an oblique inspiration.

That difference tends to be much thinner a times that a lot of folks think. Unless you are someone who is able to make enough money to support yourself full time with your writing, a lot of folks working professionally have other jobs, families, lives... the whole works. They struggle for find the right balances of those. Even when it's your sole means of income, sometimes there are struggles to find that inspiration, and when you do, it can be from a word or a bit of phrasing you happen to overhear, a sign you walk passed as you go about your day... It's one of the things I've loved about Idol over the years is the number of writers of different experience levels, including folks with a number of professional writing credits under their belt. I like that, at the end of the day, that there is a commonality of the writing experience that is often the same. (or at least contains similar elements)

Idol is as much a marathon as it is a writing contest. It's worth remembering that.

Honestly, can we make this a thread about people whose stuff we enjoyed who didn't make to this point? Because I can think of a few...
