One thing that I enjoy about Contestant Only votes is getting that nervous energy of that "one more vote could decide this". This time - I knew who was leaving us early on. And then a bunch of votes came in with their name. Then, of course, I figured "Well, so and so is leaving", and by the time the last group of votes came in, they were one of the top vote-getters.

You could play this game with exactly the same people, even the same topics, year after year, and come up with different results. Because people are going to be in different places in their lives. It's a chess board where the pieces move themselves and you never know what is going to happen, or what people are going to end up liking, until you see the smoke clear. You can see generalities and trends, but that's about it. Sometimes that's enough to make educated guesses.

I didn't guess this outcome at all.

I originally was going to have 4 leaving us, but respecting the intent of the sacrifice made it 3.

What I didn't expect was a tie!

Am I allowed to use a bye at this stage, or not?

I had to think about this one, because I hadn't set a rule. But there is precedent for someone using a bye for a tie-breaker, so yes. they can be used.

What would prevent all six of us from using byes? It would be illogical to post anything if byes are allowed. If three of us use byes and three don't, then the three who actually submitted would be forced out of the competition. It seems against the spirit of the thing, no?

I was thinking about that too. But why don't we do exactly that? :-p

Absolutely nothing would prevent you from making a strategic move by using a bye.

If however, only person is left who did not use a bye- there is no automatic elimination. Everyone is safe for that week.

It goes back to an on-the-spot decision made in, I want to say Season 5, where that move was done. Part of the spirit is that I don't want to restrict anyone making a conscious strategic decision, but I also don't want to eliminate someone by default.

Okay. This statement made it sound like only one of the six people in this write off would be in jeopardy.

I understood it as, if five people use byes and one writes an entry, that one person will not be automatically eliminated. To quote what I heard veterans saying when I was a newbie, "Gary may be evil, but he's always fair."

Yeah, I understand the intention now. It was just confusing given that it was in response to a scenario I proposed where, in our current group, 3 people use byes and 3 do not.

Yeah. I definitely see where that would be confusing. I was using the precedent scenario as an example. But yes, if only 3 people wrote an entry and 3 people were being eliminated - then no one would be going home. (But the 3 would still be charged a bye)

When you have history that goes back to 2006, there's probably a precedent for such about every question. :)

Actually, I have written an entry, and am therefore not intending to use a bye -- we'll see if I end up regretting that that decision ;-)
