Every time I thought I had come to peace with "who is leaving this week", something would change.

That's the danger of basing your sense of mental calm on something like an Idol poll in the last few hours before it's going to be closed. No matter what the eventual outcome, the voters are going to find a way to mess with you!

In the end though, they landed on a decision - a decision made by 4 votes. Which means it was less than 1 person voting for everyone in a given group.

The group that ended up being safe was Group 2. So congratulations to you.

As for the others, we are losing 2 contestants from Group 3:

[livejournal.com profile] encrefloue
[livejournal.com profile] yachiru

We are also losing 1 contestant from Group 1:

[livejournal.com profile] fodschwazzle

That's a hell of a lot of talent to be cutting at once, but cut we must.

I hope that we will continue to see them in the Home Game (*cough* more songs please [livejournal.com profile] encrefloue) and of course around here, cheering on their personal favorites!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The poll is closing tonight. In less time than it will take Tyrion Lannister to ferret out the Sons of the Harpy from Meereen, we will be losing 3 more contestants!

It's up to you - dear readers and voters in the battle for who will claim the throne of LJ Idol - to decide who will get one step closer, and who will end up a head shorter!

You know what they say: "When you play the game of Friends and Rivals, you either win or you die!"

(or something like that)

What do you plan on doing?

(and what did you do this weekend? Did you win more than you died? Or died a little more than you won?)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

In the game of Friends and Rivals, there are friends - and there are rivals. Funny how that works out.

When it comes to the competition, they are often the same thing.

This week I asked everyone to get back into groups of 5, each of them taking a different topic as their inspiration.

I didn’t say “teams”. Which is what people were in earlier this season, helping each other get to the next stage. I said “groups”. I’m sure many, if not most, caught that distinction. It’s a clever bunch of people.

There are currently 15 contestants left, and I know there was a lot of different speculation about what would be happening this round and how many would be left.

I’ll answer the second part first: We are losing 3 contestants this time. Meaning that we will have our Top 12 when the poll officially closes.

Which may seem straight-forward about how that is going to happen, but it will be a little different than you might think:

All the scores of the group *will* be averaged together and those with the lowest vote totals will be leaving us - but in this fashion:

The group with the highest overall score will be SAFE. All of them.

The second highest will lose their contestant with the fewest votes.

The lowest will lose their two contestants with the lowest amounts of votes.

So it’s really important for you to make sure to read, comment and vote for your favorites - and spread the word about anything awesome you find!

The poll closes Monday, April 25th at 9pm EDT

Good luck to everyone!

The topic thread is really quiet: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921736.html But the entries are due tonight. That means readers are going to have a lot to do this afternoon if they want to get ahead!

The Home Game is also vacant at the moment.

*grabs a tumbleweed and puts a gun to it's head*

Get busy or this tumbleweed is gonna get it!!

I came up with something to post this morning on Facebook, but I was reluctant, just because I really don't want to filter it, and I know there would be some off-topic nonsense that I don't have the time today to monitor.

But I wanted to share it with someone, so Idol it is:

"I wish I had more time to be supportive of the Trans* community, but I've wasted too much of it looking for the footnote"

***

Other things I've come up with recently: A list of topic choices: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921736.html
A work room : http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921875.html
and a home game: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/922333.html

But I'm OK with sharing those.

What are *you* OK with sharing here, that you might be reluctant to share elsewhere?

It's been a busy few months, going state-to-state and purging the voters logs. But I think, in the end, it's going to be worth it!

Soon, I will be the only one registered to vote - and will, at long last, cast my ballot for *me* to become the ruler of the free world!! (Note: Not "leader" of the Free World, I'm going to rule it!!)

Based on the last updates I saw, the groups this week are:

[livejournal.com profile] kickthehobbit, [livejournal.com profile] gratefuladdict, [livejournal.com profile] fodschwazzle, [livejournal.com profile] cheapxdate and [livejournal.com profile] lrig_rorrim

[livejournal.com profile] prog_schlock, [livejournal.com profile] whipchick, [livejournal.com profile] bleodswean, [livejournal.com profile] porn_this_way and [livejournal.com profile] halfshellvenus

[livejournal.com profile] encrefloue, [livejournal.com profile] orockthro, [livejournal.com profile] witchwife, [livejournal.com profile] yachiru and [livejournal.com profile] kathrynrose

is this correct?

Let me know if anything changes between now and the deadline!

Definitely some interesting groupings. I wonder if you're right... ;)

Last night we had some surprising results: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921465.html

A surprising twist with the topics: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921736.html

A surprising reveal in the Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921875.html

and now a surprising Home Game! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/922333.html

(OK, technically none of these were surprises *to me*. But for you - SURPRISE!!!)

***

One of the most common questions I've been getting via email since last night is "Is this a trap?" (the twist)

I promised I would address this in the Green Room, so I was answering everyone at once.

Do I *look like a guy who would be trying to get you to fall into a trap*?

The follow-up, of course being, what part of it is a trap?

Is the "trap" that it looks like a trap so you can worked up and trip? Is it actually a trap? Does it just look like a trap and the actual trap is off to the side where you normally would step to avoid the trap?

Is it just a trap set for Admiral Ackbar?

If you want to write on the topics, but aren't currently in the competition - what do you do???

Play the Home Game, of course!

This is the space to link your Home Game entries!

The topics for this week are:

I can do that
Greatest Hits Record
Que l'enfer, c'est seulement Canada
Aegis
Moon
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Congratulations to our Top 15!

That's exciting! Top 15!

That's a really specific and important number isn't it?

Sure it is. That means we can have 3 groups of 5.

Oh, sorry - what I meant to say that in the Work Room, when it comes up, you will be dividing yourself into 3 groups of 5!

Maybe The Rivals need a little bit of the ole Team spirit! :)

There are 5 choices of Topics - but this time around, each member of the group needs to be writing a different one!

That should make things a little more interesting!

Your choices are:

I can do that
Greatest Hits Record
Que l'enfer, c'est seulement Canada
Aegis
Moon

Please make sure to identify which one you are doing when you submit the link.

Speaking of - all entries must be linked back to this thread by Friday, April 22nd at 8pm EDT

Have fun!

We come to the end of another week here at Casa de Idol, and once again need to say goodbye to a mix of old and new friends.

It doesn't get any easier. However, now that it's September, we had least have the knowledge that Second Chance will be opening up in the near future.

Most people know that the great [livejournal.com profile] monkeysugarmama sacrificed this week. So that's one less person on the main tribe who has to worry. In fact, her sacrifice ends up creating a tie. More on that in a moment.

For the Redemption Tribe - we are losing two: [livejournal.com profile] miintikwa and [livejournal.com profile] uncawes

In the main tribe, we were scheduled to lose three, but because of the sacrifice, that number goes down to two.

kajel and ryl are tied, so neither of them will be eliminated, thanks to that sacrifice. They will join the Redemption Tribe next week.

However, that still leaves one - and the great [livejournal.com profile] deza is the one who will be leaving us.

Thank you to all of you for coming out this season, and I hope that you will Home Game until the Second Chance opens, and you will throw your hat in for one last grasp at the ring!

I'm really happy to have finished the book I was working on, and moving on to the next one.

As I've said before, I'm currently reading "The Search for Lost Time" by Marcel Proust. When I read the first book "Swan's Way", that was fine. I'm about to start "The Guermantes Way" and if it's as good as the second, I'm in a for treat.

That second book though, the "new" translation calls it "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower", which (to me) kind of sounds like another kind of book entirely! ;)

Carrying it around reminded me of back when I was a teenager and tried to hide what I was reading/listening to from my parents, so they didn't flip out about the book or name of the band.

So how about YOU? Anything you've ever read - or *wanted to read* but you were a little embarrassed about the name? :)

There's nothing to be unsure about when it comes to the poll, which goes until Monday evening! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/774480.html

I'm not a gamer.

Never have been. Not likely to ever be one.

Not really all that interested in becoming one. They can be interesting to watch other people play. But video games are just not something that is in my wheelhouse.

(The only thing I have in my wheelhouse is an actual wheel. I am quite literal that way).

So when I say I had no idea who Zoe Quinn was before a couple days ago, you can just nod and smile. Some of you will be "I don't know either" and others will be "HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW!!!". I'm sure there will be some who will run to their search engine of choice to find out who the hell I'm talking about. Which is good. Because you should be reading about her, and more importantly, about her game Depression Quest.

Is it a good game? I have no idea. Let's assume that it is.

There has been a bit of a firestorm around her over the last week or so (or at least that's when it reached me) because of something that came out of her personal life and spilled over into the bowels of Gamerdom.

Do I have more than bits and pieces of the story? No. Is that going to stop me from talking about it? *checks to make sure this is still the internet*

Women get harassed all the time. Pretty much just for breathing. The higher they go, the more they do, the greater the harassment becomes.

So Zoe Quinn wasn't exactly well loved in some circles to begin with. (Again, from what I understand)

I'm not sure of the time table - but fairly recently, her ex-boyfriend wrote about her in his blog. He wrote about how she cheated on him with 5 different guys, including her boss and other people in the gaming industry.

There are a couple things to this - because there are plenty of people quite upset with him for writing this. BUT some of the people I've seen upset are folks that I personally know write about what a horrible person their ex is in their blogs all the time. It's part of having a blog. You talk about what's going on with your life, from your viewpoint.

I've never been in that exact position and I've never had an ex who was so much in the public eye within a certain industry - but anyone who has ever been on the "receiving end" of a bad breakup knows that "Fuck 'em" part of your lizard brain that is just feeling pain and doesn't really care what happens when you let it out.

I went through a very public divorce on my own LJ. We both had them, and friends in common, and it pretty much spilled all over the place. Looking back, I think we both would have handled things very differently. At some point, I think that ex is probably going to be kicking himself for doing something he shouldn't have done.

That corner of the internet exploded.

Like I said, there's a lot of information I just don't have. Could I mine the depths of the internet to get it? Sure. Would that be more than 99.9% of people who are already commenting on the issue have done? Yep.

To some people it's a matter of "the problems with the industry" to others it's the extremely sexist response from people going after Zoe Quinn.

Assuming that what her ex said is actually true. It's a leap of faith, but let's go ahead and make it for the sake of discussion.

She doesn't exactly sound like the best person. I doubt that I would want to have any close relationships with her. Some people might hear that sort of thing, shrug and move on. It pushes way too many of my personal buttons.

If there was anything improper with her job due to those relationships - the people in charge of looking into such things should be looking into them, if for no other reason, to cover their own bottom lines.

Here's the thing though - there's nothing in there that warrants people she's never met going off her online. There's definitely nothing that warrants death threats.

If she were the spokesperson for Fidelity, Inc I would say that she would be a bigger target for internet rage. But she designed a game that reflects what it is like to live with depression. I think it's safe to say that she already has a lot on her emotional plate already! She probably doesn't need more - much less people unloading their buffet of rage into her face.

Pam Bondi is the Attorney General of Florida. Personally, I think she's done a horrible job. I've been guilty of making "dog kidnapping" jokes about her (due to her adopting a dog after Katrina, and then fighting the family when they got back on their feet and wanting their dog back).

She's currently trying to "uphold Florida's ban on same sex marriage". She's not my favorite person.

She's gotten a lot of comments about how she's talking about the sanctity of marriage, and has three divorces. Is that fair? Not really. But it at least relates to what people are talking about.

The rest of the comments about her that I've read from detractors make me wish that I wasn't on "their side" of the issue. They are looking for an excuse to say these things about a woman, and she is their designated target.

It's like the people who used Ferguson as an excuse to vent their racism.

I'm sure the gaming industry has issues. I'm sure that there are times when the relationships between the game designers and the people who review the games is compromised. Why can I be so sure? Because it's true in other industries, why should I think that a generally more laid back area (in comparison to say, the oil industry) would be different?

That's something that people should be talking about. Not in terms of what happened in Zoe Quinn's personal life - but in terms of what that kind of thing does to the integrity of an industry itself.

BUT, and here's the rub - that stopped being the story pretty quickly. It became about how women are treated by their fellow gamers. It didn't have to become that story. But the internet is too stupid, too sexist, and too in love with the sound of their own misogyny to stop.

It's OK to not like her. It's OK to want the industry to do a better job of policing itself, or have someone else do it. What is NOT OK is to be an asshat.

Once you do that, like it or not, the story stops being about whatever you *want* it to be about and starts being about the crappy way women are treated. Which, men of the internet, is never going to end well for you.

***

Something else that will never end well for you, is this week's poll: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/774480.html

Tech Support has a rare day off from the real world!  Huzzah!  Unfortunately, [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm knows this so I've been tasked to set up a Green Room.

Little does he know... I like doing this.  Don't tell him, OK?  It'll be our little green secret.

What's everyone got planned for the weekend?  Other than the constant use of the F5 key, that is.  I've got a series of reorganization projects to do along with setting aside study time for my next insurance-related test.  I really know how to live it up.

HGTV needs to stop being so distracting.  I'm watching "Extreme Homes".  Why?  Someone built a Hobbit Hole and I need to see it!

Don't forget to read and vote here:  http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/774480.html !  Encourage your friends to do so as well!

I saw it on Facebook.

That's never an encouraging way to start off, but in this case, it's true. I did see it on Facebook. Not sure who posted it. Pretty sure it was more than one person. Maybe it was someone on Idol. I honestly can't remember.

But it's a meme that has been out there for awhile. I've seen it. I've scrolled past it.

For some reason though, this time it stuck in my head.

List 10 books that changed your life.

There are the obvious ones - the Tolkein, Asimov's Foundation series, I'm sure people would list a Gaiman book in there. Maybe a Stephen King or two. JK Rowling for those of the younger set.

It got me thinking though - which made me want to come to the one place where I can think out loud and publish some of my list. Maybe I'll get to 10. Maybe I'll list more. Maybe YOU can post about some of the books that changed you, and then the discussion will be so interesting that I'll totally forget about my list altogether!

I was wondering which Asimov or Heinlein book to talk about - because I really can't begin to list books that I was obsessed with growing up without talking about them. But really, they were the gateway to the book The Futurians by Damon Knight.

I loved this book. More accurately, I loved what this book was about - a group of writers coming together and forming this club. As a pre-teen, I started mixing milk and Coke because it was mentioned that it was a popular drink with them!

All of these different people, coming together because they loved writing! It was as if the Avengers were a writing group. I wanted to be a part of something like this.

Looking back - a lot of the motivation to start LJ Idol can be traced to that book.

The next one that pops out at me is from when I was about 16-17. A friend of mine lent me a book about Jim Morrison, which introduced me to Arthur Rimbaud and "A Season in Hell". If you want to show a completely inexperienced teenage boy something that is going to mess with his head, Rimbaud is the way to go. If you *really* want to throw him over the edge into going down mental rabbit holes about art and the dark sides of life, give him a copy of Flowers of Evil by Charles Baudelaire.

Teenagers are morose and weird as it is - but that book, and the Bukowski I was shoveling into my head like it was coal feeding my mental engines - well, let's just say there's probably a reason why I was walking about in hospital slippers and barking at people! ;)

I'll think some more, and add them in the comments.

How about you? What are some of the books that made you the mess wonderful human being you are today?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
http://www.pewinternet.org/2014/08/26/social-media-and-the-spiral-of-silence/

Have you seen that?

If so, what do you think about the idea that people are less likely to speak up on social media, if they think folks disagree with them?

I'm not sure that they interviewed anyone who contributes to comments sections on Yahoo articles/YouTube videos! ;)

Is the "Snowden/NSA" topic really fair? "The NSA spies on your internet activity - hey, let's talk about this on the internet!!"

Are there areas where you get sucked into the "Spiral of Silence"? Issues that you wish you could talk about more, but that you're afraid people won't want to hear what you have to say? (I'd qualify it with "that you actually know something about - but most people online tend to talk about things they *haven't* done any research on. :D)

Will this report help to silence you on the issue of people not talking about Snowden/NSA?

***

Hopefully this study will make you want to go out and talk more about something folks *are* talking about - an area where people can have different opinions about what is and isn't completely awesome, but all come to the same conclusion - that voting in the LJ Idol polls is the best thing ever!

So make sure to go out and do it! And then tell a friend or three about your wonderful addiction! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/774480.html

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

You can plan all you want. But life is going to do what it wants to do.

Often just to spite you.

Because life is out to get you, and will not stop until you are dead.

LJ Idol is much like Life in that way. Only we *do* let one person survive. So we’re like Life, only slightly nicer!

This week, 2 people from the Redemption Tribe will be leaving us, and 3 from the regular poll.

It’s Community Only, so you need to be a member to vote. Fortunately, you can go do that. Right now! Anyone else who wants to vote - have them join the community. It’s easy to do, it helps with visibility and that way they never miss a chance to support you… and even better, they never miss a chance to read all of the fantastic entries and find new favorites!

Because that’s what this is all about.

Well, that and the merciless hunting you down.

(It’s mostly the merciless hunting you down part though.)

The poll will close Monday, Sept 1st at 9pm EDT

So there’s really no excuse not to get out there to read, comment, and vote to keep your favorites in the competition!

Good luck to everyone!

I'm pleased to announce that the results are in from today's election.

Primary ballots are being cast elsewhere - but in the only election that truly matters, the 'Merican citizens with full voting rights (those who live in 'Merica, with the name Gary) have overwhelmingly re-elected me as despot!

My next term of office will continue the promise that I set forth in this campaign, to rule with an iron fist and smash all enemies before me.

For those who worked hard on my campaign - thank you. For those who just sat around and did not (as usual) you will be returned to the dungeons where you will turn in your entry before the deadline this evening: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/773244.html
