It's been another week of difficult decisions and a few surprises (for me at least).

One of them was the [livejournal.com profile] dmousey sacrifice. Which is both difficult, and surprising. Well, it was at the time it was posted at least.

Which means there are two more people who will be leaving this week.

They are:

[livejournal.com profile] lordrexfear (who has done *amazing* this season! Really glad that you decided to jump back into the pool!)

and... well, it was *supposed* to be [livejournal.com profile] halfshellvenus. But it is NOT.

Why? Because I have a standing order on what to do if she is ever about to be voted out... someone else is throwing themselves onto the sword to keep her in the running.

Which means that we are instead losing [livejournal.com profile] rayaso!!

Seriously - you are all really different writers, at different stages of your craft. But I've loved having all of you here this mini season, and I hope we will continue to see you in the Home Game, and around here - cheering on your favorites!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Kids today!

They want everything, and they want it right now! ;)

Seriously though - is it worth waiting to have a woman on the US currency $20? If it was originally said that the change should happen to the $10 (because that was the next one set to be updated) should that proceed, regardless of the sudden popularity of Alexander Hamilton?

Should they just change both? Who should be on them?

Personally, I think all images currency should be changed to pictures of LJ Idol winners. I'm pretty sure there are some island nations that have already done this.

There will be no delay in the poll results though: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921038.html Those are coming tonight! So make sure to make your support for your favorites known!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

For US residents, today is “Tax Day”. (Although because of Emancipation Day - tomorrow - there is an extension until Monday to actually get your taxes in.)

Why am I bringing this seemingly random thing up in a post about voting?

Because we are paying a toll.

This was the first week without byes, without a safety net.

Which means anyone who misses the deadline is eliminated.

In this case, that means [livejournal.com profile] impoetry is leaving us.

*kicks Brian*

Usually I’m sentimental. Not this time. *kicks Brian for such a hippie that he missed the deadline*

*kicks him one more time*.

Anyway - that’s one more spot forward for everyone else. Two more steps if you count that there is a sacrifice in this week’s poll. But that hasn’t officially happened yet, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves!

As for the rest of you - just because you are a little closer to the end, doesn’t mean you are safe.

The only thing “safe” about this week is that it’s safe to assume that you have some really good entries to read!

We are losing three contestants this week!

So make sure to read, comment and vote for your favorites! Then tell a friend to do the same!

The poll closes Monday, April 18th at 9pm EDT

Good luck to everyone!

Following this mini-season, I have something planned that I would love to have everyone not only participate in, but also to promote. It's a special event for the 10th anniversary of LJ Idol so I'd love for you to get out your thinking caps on ways that you can help get the word out!

I've sent emails to the folks I had been talking to inside Livejournal before Season 9, hoping they could help out - but no response. I'm wondering if they even still work there.

No details yet - because closing out *this mini-season* is what we are focused on now. But I'm pretty excited about celebrating. I hope it's as much fun in reality as it is in my head!

(I have someone tentatively working on the graphics for it, which will be awesome if it works out the way that it should).

This sort of ties into the the idea of "Where should you promote to get new writers". Because going into existing writing communities and promoting IMO is rude. I definitely don't condone that - unless there is some sort of open call policy where the Powers That Be have declared it OK. Non-dedicated spaces where writers just happen to be though - those are the sweet spot! ;)

Then again, it's a "special kind" of writer we are looking for... the kind that can survive and flourish in the Idol-atmosphere. So maybe we should start putting up signs in mental institutions!!!

Speaking of the current mini-season- the new topic enrtries are due today! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919252.html

There is a Home Game for people not currently in the competition who want to write anyway: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/920176.html

and, of course, the Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919439.html if you still need help banging something together!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I finally put up at Home Game thread for those interested: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/920176.html

The main topic thread can be found here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919252.html

and the Work Room, for those still hammering out their ideas: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919439.html

Apparently the Time magazine Top 100 Most Influential People Reader Poll list came out. I've won so often that they just retired my name from consideration... but there are other not-as-awesome folks on it.

Who would be on YOUR list of "most influential People" in your life?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
If you're not a current contestant - but want to play along anyway:

That's what the HOME GAME is all about!

These are the topics for the week:

We must bear witness so that it scars us
John Otto
Ethics of human cloning

and *this* is where you link your entry!!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Good news: Bruce Springsteen has announced that he *will not* be cancelling any future LJ Idol appearances!

Nor will Bryan Adams or any other musician famous in the 80s.

There was some concern that it might happen, following the NC boycotts, because LJ Idol does not allow for transgender folks to use restrooms *at all*. It turns out that Idol doesn't allow *anyone* into our private restrooms, instead pointing people to a shovel and a trench that we have outside in the back.

We do not discriminate - we hate *all* dirty hippie foreigners!!

So we're fine and we will have exactly the same amount of Springsteen Idol appearances as were originally on the schedule for this calendar year!!!

The Topic: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919252.html
The Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919439.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's one of *those* days.

I don't even have the time - or interest - in getting into it, other than to say It's one of *those days*.

The Work Room has some interesting things going on: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919439.html

There's a new topic: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919252.html

and last night's results: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/918826.html

Give me some GOOD news!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We are nearing the end of our time together, as well as the end of the "first run topics". (before I start picking from people who have already had 1 topic used already - I believe I counted 7 unused groupings as of now).

But trust me, they are just as interesting as the ones from weeks before!

You know the drill. Select one of the following:

We must bear witness so that it scars us
John Otto
Ethics of human cloning

and post the link to your entry back to this thread by Friday, April 15th at 8pm EDT
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
This was posted in the Green Room today, but it's interesting enough that I wanted to make it a Work Room.

It's about writing and gender.

Sure, it's talking about film and speaking roles - but it easily translate to fiction writing as well.

For those of you who do write a lot of fiction - is this imbalance something you keep in mind while creating characters? Is it "easier" to create someone you more closely identify with?

For that matter - when you write as someone who *isn't* from your specific identity, is that a huge risk of "getting it wrong" and receiving backlash as a result? (Which I'm pretty sure *wasn't* your intent! :D)

I've seen a few writers out there in publishing who seem to want to "embrace more diversity" in their writing, but when they do, it comes out really poorly and they just end up upsetting the people who they wanted to attract. How much - and what kind - of research do you end up doing with something like this?

We all know that the only *real* voice - and opinion that matters in any of this is ME. But in your pretend little universes, creating your boxes of moonlight-filled dreams, where - if anywhere - does this fit into your writing schemes?

(the new topic is at: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/919252.html)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Going into this week, I said that three people would be leaving us.

I should have known that the voters would have a mind of their own on this.

There ended up being a 9-way tie - with one person being a single vote shy of making it a 10-person tie. (a couple votes away from the Redemption Tribe being made up of a huge chunk of contestants)

Unfortunately, there was that one person who was one vote short.

Which means we will be saying goodbye to them.

On the other hand - they are receiving the solo spotlight! (which will hopefully carry over to Home Gaming and coming back via Second Chance!)

Goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] crimsonplum

100 Weeks

[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
There are times when I may overlook something, and I'll get a friendly reminder via email about it.

I got one of those a few minutes ago, asking me to look into how many weeks they had. It was then that I noticed something staring right at me.

That someone had managed to hit that mark *2 weeks ago* and I had completely missed it!

Which (to me at least) is kind of funny, because she's the kind of writer that you might not notice at first, but as her work starts piling up you start going "Wait a second, she's really good!" and before you know it she's getting closer and closer to the end again!

Anyone who survives Idol intact has done something amazing. The people who keep doing it, season after season? Those people should probably be committed. ;) Getting to the point where you have survived 100 weeks of it? Yeah, that's padded room territory right there!

You know her. You love her. (or you will)

Welcome to the 100 Weeks club [livejournal.com profile] lawchicky!!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We've reached the "Day of Reckoning" for 3 more people this week - and from what I've seen in the polls over the last few weeks, I really wouldn't put anyone in the "completely safe" category! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/771972.html

So, for those of you comfortable doing so - what entries really impressed you, that might not be getting enough attention?

Heck - what is it about YOUR entry that makes you think "Hell Yeah I deserve to stick around one more week!!"

Once you get finished with voting - head on over to the Killing Floor. There was actually only one entry there this week, but it definitely needs some more love and attention! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/770622.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I've talked to some of my friends in ISIS, and they are going to be on hand for the eliminations this week. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/771972.html So make sure that you aren't on the chopping block!!

*waves to the nice NSA agents who are now visiting the website!*

My scheme to increase Green Room traffic has worked!

Remember to vote for your favorites, that's the only way to keep them in the competition! If you are in the NSA, I'm sure you have an account that you can use to vote!

I'd suggest reading all of the entries! Because - who knows what activities are going on in there?!? Most of the people who come here are pretty darn sketchy and need to be thoroughly investigated! The best way to do that is by *voting to keep them in the competition* so that you can read more of their entries, to gain more information about them!

What activities have you been up to? (might as well confess now and save the trouble of a full investigation)

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

There was a surprised waiting for me when I got home tonight. It was a facebook notification that my niece Mackenzie had nominated me for the ALS challenge.

I had sworn that I wasn’t going to do it. But my niece asked me, so I pretty much had to do it!

I got home, mowed the lawn - came in, filled a bucket with cold water and all of the ice cubes we had - set my phone up at a safe distance with the video on, and dumped the bucket on my head!

I challenged a few people - but the big one is that I have now challenged all Idol contestants - past and present. So if you were even a little entertained by me dumping ice water on myself - go out and do it as well! I need a laugh!

Speaking of having a laugh - it’s time for the poll again!

Which also means that it’s time to announce the drops and bye-outs. This week there is one of each:

Drop: [livejournal.com profile] unmowngrass Bye-out: [livejournal.com profile] poppetawoppet

Really sorry to see both of you go, and as always, I hope you will consider signing up when Second Chance comes around.

As for the rest of you - the bottom three contestants will be eliminated this week!

So make sure to get out there and spread the word to: Read, Comment and Vote for your favorites to stay alive in the competition!

The poll closes Thursday, August 21st at 9pm EDT

Good luck to everyone!

I totally missed this, and I shouldn't have.

But yesterday was the anniversary of something important. On August 18th, 1920 women in the United States were granted the right to vote!

The main reason why this is important is that it set the stage for women to be able to vote in LJ Idol polls! One of them is coming up tonight!

But before that happens, the women (and men) need to get in gear and make sure to have their entries posted: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/770282.html (you have until 8pm EDT TONIGHT!)

If you don't, I will shoot you with a salmon cannon! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kICS32kady4

So stop dumping buckets of ice water on yourself and make sure to have your entries in! If you already have done so - start bugging your favorites!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com

It has cats, and feminism! That's what you people want isn't it? ;)

Your needs are fulfilled now. You can go forth and live life to the fullest!

Or whatever it is that you pretend to do all day!

Oh, wait - there is also a topic: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/770282.html
A Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/770473.html
and a Killing Floor: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/770622.html

Between all of those things, you should be more than prepared for the rest of your day!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
There were many nights when I was curling in a ball on the floor, crying in pain, wanting to die. Waiting for it.

Anyone who has gone through dental problems knows what it is like. Maybe not when the infection gets to the point that the pain is shooting up the side of your face, because most people don't wait that long.

I waited because I wasn't able to afford it.

That's the truth. Or at least part of it.

The rest is that I had read that the infection could kill you - and I wanted to die.

There were nights that I thought "If I wasn't so much of a coward, I would just end it right now". I really wanted it, but I couldn't do it.

I had tried a few years before - before the divorce, after the first time I found out that my wife had cheated on me.

It was the worst plan ever - take a bunch of pills and never wake up. I did.

But I completely forgot that they were homeopathic! I got really sick, but that's all.

So I knew that I wasn't "smart enough" to actually be successful. My only real option was to let something else kill me.

I had friends that I could talk to on the phone. But none of them were local, and most of them had lives. I loved and was loved in return - but even that felt as hopeless as it turned out to be.

The people that I could talk to on the phone, they helped keep me alive - and most of them I knew from having started LJ Idol.

This was what Season 4 looked like from inside my apartment. Me, barely holding on to what little I had left inside me, because I had make a commitment to the contestants that I would finish the season.

There were people who legitimately hated each other - and some who just liked to pretend that they did in order to get under their skin.

There were factions and people trying to cheat (or "prove a point" as one put it).

Splinter groups being formed and threats against my life (from people who had my address and could have got there) were made.

LJ Idol was all that I had. Or more accurately, at that moment, it felt like all that I had - and there were people openly talking about how badly they wanted to *destroy it*, because I wouldn't let them be in charge, and I eliminated them when they had the fewest votes. It "wasn't fair" and they said that I "had to pay".

They formed their own versions of Idol and more or less crashed and burned (one is still around, pretty much on life support. They were the ones who recently came back, trying to recruit people) because they didn't have that one thing that I had - I was *living for Idol*. No one was going to put more of themselves into it, because no one ever needed it as much as I did.

I wanted to die, but seeing these people who loved this thing that I had created, this gift that I was giving to them, that was a bright spot. It was something that I could look at and say "These people have changed from this and produced work that would not exist without Idol. That would not have happened if I was not still alive".

For all of the people who wanted to make my life -or each other's lives - hell, there were people who just genuinely wanted to be there, to experience what the group had to offer, and take something positive away from being a part of it.

The dental problems were eventually addressed. Relationships came and went. I got out of my apartment more and actually made some friends.

Even the things that seemed too big to handle, they ended up being handled.

It was a crazy/completely fucked up chapter - and I'm really glad that I was able to see how it played out.

I wasn't being a coward. I just needed something to focus on, something to "be brave for" when being brave for myself wasn't enough.

Those feeling though, even now, they wash over me from time to time. It's not really a "dark cloud", it's more like a plastic bag someone has put over my face, pulling it tight.

In those moments, the "what if" comes into my head. But I have so much more going on in my life right now. It's not just "living for Idol", I'm at a point that I want to live *for me*. Because damnit, things are good. Even the bad shit that comes from every day life and relationships - it's still pretty damn good.

Idol has been a part of all of that for me. It was there when I needed something to hold onto it.

Whatever you might be going through out there, I hope that it can be there for you too.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's [livejournal.com profile] kithan's birthday!

So bring all of your Pepsi, Cheetos, and bacon to the middle of the room and back away slowly. Maybe you won't end up getting hurt in her onslaught.

Speaking of oncoming onslaughts and the past being revisited - it occurred to me that we are approaching the 6 month mark for this season. What does that mean for Idol?

When I'm being nice, I refer to certain periods of the competition as "stress points". When I'm not - I think of them more as "Holy Grap! People are unstable!!!" points.

A couple weeks to either side of 6 months is one of those points where you tend to either see someone completely implode - or in some cases - explode.

I'm pointing this out in hopes that we can work together to *not* have that happen here this time around. (or at 8 months, another stress point)

If you are ready to implode, stop for a moment and talk to someone about it.

If you are ready to *explode* - take it out on the street. Just find some random person and beat them with a baseball bat. Trust me, you will feel much better after! :) I know a guy named Darren Wilson. Maybe go see him!

(Not the police officer from Ferguson, just a guy who happens to have that name. You'll have an excuse!)
