Before we get to the results, I want to take a moment to reflect on what it means to be a Gatekeeper.

They are people that I trust, and that I believe the community does as well. People that I know have high standards. I try my best to have them reflect the various tastes of a given season. (If there is a lot of poetry, I want to have someone who is well versed, pun intended, in poetry. If it's fiction... you get the idea.

With a mini season like this, I wanted to bring out some heavy hitters. Some names that anyone who has been around Idol for any length of time would go "Yeah, OK. That makes sense."

People always freak out when they hear that the Gatekeepers are coming, and there's a part of me that loves that. But I also want to acknowledge that these people are doing me, they are doing Idol a favor.

I'm extremely grateful to them for taking the time to do this. To come in, read and weigh the entries and determine their favorites. It's a big responsibility that I put on their shoulders, and they, as always, handle it magnificently. They come out because they love Idol. Which is something that is always a little overwhelming to me to think about.

I asked them to give me anything that they wanted to promote - so that I could steer you their way. Some had stuff, others did not. :)

Without any further chatter - I present to you, Your Gatekeepers!  (Note: some parts are accidentally in bold. Other than the names, it's not that they are more important than other parts, it's just how it copy/pasted and it's getting late. So I'll figure it out later!)

I'll start with the one who was briefly in this season (although ended up byeing out before she really got started) - [personal profile] chasing_silver  Some know her as milk_and_glass. Others by Elizabeth Hawksworth  https://www.amazon.com/Elizabeth-Hawksworth/e/B00DQUPVD2/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2?qid=1545360878&sr=8-2    (I'm suggesting that link. She didn't. :) ) Whatever you know about her, you know that she's a powerhouse writer and human being.  She's also a Canadian. But that's not her fault.

From person who was briefly in this season, to someone who is greatly missed from it.  If you've been in Idol - you know her and love her.  Maybe fear her a little bit.  I think she has some other name on DW, but I'm too lazy to research it. Besides, the name everyone knows her by is kathrynrose.

"I'm pretty boring, but I am the audio editor of the Brevity podcast, which some people may enjoy.  (our latest episode: https://brevity.wordpress.com/2018/09/04/brevity-podcast-episode-10-one-minute-memoir/).  other than that it's pretty much me and the cats."

Which is entirely too modest. Because we're talking someone who has been in the Top Ten in recent seasons more times than I can even remember. I also don't recall ever being bored by her. Far from it!

From legends, let's go to a winner. Our most recent one actually. The winner of Season 10 - marlawentmad -  "As for anything I want you to promote, not so much. I am in a quiet period, but if you're making introductions, you can say I am a belly dancer and writer in the midwest, with my eyes on western horizons" It's the most recent season, so people are probably the most familiar with how awesome she is, but she's definitely insanely talented.

Continuing on with the recent winners - the winner of our last mini season, Friends and Rivals, is also a Gatekeeper. I could go on about his credits and his history with Idol. But the fact that I'm saying "he" and "winner" means you already know who I'm talking about. His name is JoeyMichaels, and he is owned by cats.
Not what you might know him from, but it's also something true. So I'm going with that.

There's yet another winner on hand - the co-winner of the mini-season Exhibit B. The one and only lrig_rrorim! I'm going to cut and paste some of her own words. But before I do that, it's important to note that she's the person that *I* call when I need some editing done for my freelance work. She's that good. "

And the project I've been spending the most time on lately is a nonprofit I helped to get started this year. The Dream Foundry is a resource for beginners in the speculative arts (writers, artists, podcasters, editors, translators, game writers - you name it, if they contribute to making something strange and awesome in the world then we aim to support it!). We've got big plans for the coming year (and a solid 5-year plan), and the blog on our website is and will continue to be a source of great stuff - interviews with creators, industry news, peeks inside the organization itself, and more to come soon. (https://dreamfoundry.org/blog/)

We have one more winner in the mix, but I'm going to change it up with the "surprise guest". That person no one is expecting to see, but I was able to get. There's always at least one. Honestly, I'm personally thrilled to have him back in these waters!  It's been a long time since he's graced this place with his presence (and never at DW, obviously). but he's a member of the 100 Weeks Club and I'm quite sure that what passes for "old timers" around here these days will either remember him, or have heard stories!  He's our very own java_fiend!

Our final winner, but not the final Gatekeeper - is another one of those players who earned the title of "legend". Seasons come to be known for various things. But Season 8 was the hardcore writing showdown that came down to single digit votes, and she was the winner. As someone who knows her personally, yeah, you should be more than a little intimidated knowing that she was reading your stuff. ;)

There are figures with long and storied histories with Idol. But the members of the Final 4 of Season 4 (the one that causes all other seasons to step back and go "Damn!") tend to be regarded as their own kind of superheroes.  Kittenboo was there. She fought her way to the point in one of the most bloody seasons to date, and came extremely close to winning. She went through the very first Hell Week (16 entries in one go) and later went through a different kind of Hell, being my assistant!

Last, but never least, is someone that I've been thinking about a lot lately. Not just because she's amazing and I was hoping to see her jump into the fray here, but because I was thinking about her status within Idol.  If I'm not mistaken, she's been in more Finales than anyone in the history of Idol.  Probably more Top 5s, Top 10s... (if not, it's close).  Survivor's host Jeff Probst, back in the Amazon season, declared that Rob Cesternino was "the smartest player to never win".  Some say that title was eventually taken by Cirie Fields. gratefuladdict is our Rob Cesternino and Cirie Fields combined. I believe that she is the greatest player to never win the game. Season after season, I don't think there is anyone I would put money on to get further than her each and every time.

Thank you to all of you for coming out, and helping us make this mini season better.

Sure, there is going to be some heartache at the results. There always is.

But I hope there is also appreciation for who you are, and the task you performed so well.   Thank you. I sincerely appreciate you, and I hope you know that.

When I start sending out invitations, I'm never quite sure who is going to say "Yes".

After all, I'm asking people for a favor - on behalf of the competition, I am asking them to read the entries and cast votes that will help determine how a season is going to play out.

Some people say "No". Others say "Yes", but something comes up.

I'm happy to say that there were quite a few "Absolutely"s this time around, and all of them seemed to enjoy themselves.

So - thank you to the contestants for not embarrassing us. ;)

But since this is the "Gatekeeper post", it's time for me to let you know who they were - and give you a moment to thank them for their time. Some of them may pop in and comment about their process and things they noticed as they were reading. None of them are going to say "I voted for you""didn't" (or shouldn't) but it's always interesting to get a look into the thought process.

This time around was a mixture of Old Friends of Idol, some folks working professionally in the writing field, one actual Survivor, some of my personal favorite writers (and people), and a mixture of all these things.

So without further ado...

Since the dawn of time, people have wondered “Who are these Gatekeepers anyway?”

It’s a fair question.

Although, to be as fair as that question, people haven’t actually been wondering that since the Dawn of Time. It just sometimes feels that way. It’s only been since Monday!

There was someone coming that had me quasi-jumping up and down. But they had to cancel at last minute. I probably would have been the only one jumping. They have promised to do something for us in the near future though, so I’ll hold off on announcing it now. But, man, that is going to be cool.

Instead, we get a bunch of hacks... oh wait, no we don’t!

We get the largest group of Gatekeepers ever assembled, with tastes that roam all over the place. It’s an absolutely top-notch group of people. I couldn’t have been happier that they agreed to do this favor for Idol.

Thank you to all of the Gatekeepers for all of your hard work!

Gatekeepers

[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Before we have the results, we have the reveal! :)

The Gatekeepers step out of the shadows and into the light as they stand aside one at a time to reveal who will be walking through, and which runs are sadly coming to an end.

Some of them are familiar faces, others you might not know right away. I’ll try to explain those ones. :)

Of course we have some previous winners

[livejournal.com profile] tru2myart - Winner of Season 2
[livejournal.com profile] chite - Winner of Season 4
[livejournal.com profile] boxsofrain - Winner of Season 5
[livejournal.com profile] beautyofgrey - Winner of Season 6

We also have Jason Snyder. He doesn’t have an LJ but when I asked him if he wanted me to pimp something, he sent me this: http://www.grayhavencomics.com/ He has work in Volumes 1 and 3.

More importantly though, those of you who know your Idol History(tm) know that before I came up with Idol I ran a season of something called “Fanfic Survivor”. People I knew from fanfic (and some I knew from real life) facing each other in Survivor-on-the-internet type challenges involving writing. It was a lot of fun even if the format wasn’t quite “right”. :)

Jason was the first and only winner of Fanfic Survivor. Thus he’s “sort of” Idol Family. :) Without him, and the others who played, and the fun we had - there wouldn’t be an Idol.

Who else was in the mix? A couple newbies this year, contestants who, had real life not interfered, I think would have had a really good chance of being on the other side of things:
[livejournal.com profile] isis_lives
and
[livejournal.com profile] my_palimpsest
and one former contestant in both Idol *and* Fanfic Survivor: [livejournal.com profile] adpaz!

And? Yes there’s more “ands”:
People who shouldn’t need an introduction - other than I’m introducing everyone:
[livejournal.com profile] alexpgp
[livejournal.com profile] darkprism
(some random person that I found on the street. . . I doubt anyone knows who she is though. . .)
and the always colorful and opinionated [livejournal.com profile] lordrexfear!

The final Gatekeeper is under figure like Jason who hasn’t played Idol before. But he was the very first writer who ever talked about my own work online. I know he would rather that I was spending my time working on my own work, but I’m grateful that he agreed to help out with Gatekeeper duties in Idol. He no longer has his [livejournal.com profile] barryreese account, but that’s who he is - Barry Reese. http://www.barryreese.net/

Thank you to all of you for your assistance, the time and consideration you put into making your individual decisions.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Putting the results in the hands of someone else is never easy. It's one thing when it's the "general public". Most people have an opinion one way or another about them. ;)

But quality is a subjective beast, and the public can sometimes be fickle. What it likes one moment, it tires of it in the next.

The same goes for any other grouping big or small. Things ultimately come down to "did this connect with the audience?"

So putting it in the hands of *two* different groups this time around, was bound to produce some interesting results.

One of those groups was the CURRENT CONTESTANTS. I don't need to introduce them. I hope you know all of those wackos by now! ;)

The other group, the one with the final cut of the week, were the Gatekeepers.

As always, some people are going to agree with their decisions and some might not. But they did an impossible job and I thank them for stepping up and doing it.

For the record - since I reported what I heard about overall last time around - I will do the same this time. I heard from quite a few of them just what an extremely talented group this was, and although Open Topic has a tendency to trip people up, that overall it ended up being a difficult decision (I gave them the same number to pick from as the contestants, so they also ended up having to pair down their lists.)

Anyway - before I announce the results, I want to announce (and again, thank) the following Gatekeepers:

Winner of Season 1: [livejournal.com profile] tinhuviel
Winner of Season 2: [livejournal.com profile] tru2myart
Winner of Season 3: [livejournal.com profile] welfy

[livejournal.com profile] beldar
[livejournal.com profile] deza
[livejournal.com profile] joeymichaels
[livejournal.com profile] liret
[livejournal.com profile] mezzominty
[livejournal.com profile] oberonia
[livejournal.com profile] porcelain72
[livejournal.com profile] puppetmaker40
and of course, the one, the only, the [livejournal.com profile] soopageek!!

Thank you to all of you - now it's off to look at those votes again!!! :)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Unfortunately, always a crowd favorite,[livejournal.com profile] thenodrin missed the deadline this week and has been eliminated. Hopefully everything is OK.

As I know many of you surmised there is no poll this week.

It is a Contestant Only vote.

So, if you are a current contestant, go on over to the Topic Thread http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/318962.html - read the entires, make a list of your *30 favorite entries* and send that list in to me at clauderainsrm@gmail.com by Saturday March 27th at 5pm EDT.

As I've said in the past, the number of contestants being eliminated will be determined by the "break off point", but approximately 5 of the lowest vote getters will be leaving.

Scared yet?

Probably not. You're a hardy breed. You've seen it all.

Wait - who is that over there? Oh, that's right - it's ALSO a Gatekeeper Round. They will also have their say and the approximately 5 lowest vote getters from their votes (who haven't already been eliminated in the contestant round) will be leaving.

So in total, roughly 10 of you will be leaving this week.

How about now? ;)

(what about if it was done in a fiery cage dangling over a gorge. . . *checks the budget* OK. Scrap that part. But imagine that you are!!!)

Good luck to you all!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Before I post the results, I want to take a moment to thank the Gatekeepers.

It is not the easiest position to be in, knowing that your vote may be the one that can tip the balance in either direction. Knowing that a handful of you are going to be making a decision that will have a major impact on the competition.

In this case it literally came down to 1 vote. 1 vote that tipped us from being in a position to eliminate 23 to one where we are eliminating 11.

This wasn't an easy decision. I wish that I could say there were so many amazing entries to pick from - actually I did hear some *very* nice things from the Gatekeepers about a number of entries.

I'm going to be quite blunt though, and say something that you have never heard me say before. I don't care how long you have been at Idol. This is the first time that I've said this, and I hope it's the last - this week did not live up to expectations whatsoever.

I don't know if it was that people froze when you saw "Open Topic" or what. I still maintain that HANDS DOWN this is my favorite group of writers from *any season* - and maybe that's it, maybe I just hold you to a higher standard because of that. I know what you are capable of doing, and when I see you not doing it, I just get all befuddled.

I digress, but I do it because I think that it needs to be said. The line between "in" and "out" this time was one vote. I don't think anyone should be feeling particularly safe right now.

1 vote, and I'll be frank about this, they were nicer than *I* would have been.

It's really time to dig in and refocus. Show that talent that amazes me week after week.

Because I know it's there and I want other people to see it too.

/mindless rant and return to thanking the Gatekeepers.

Our Gatekeepers came from a fairly wide range of backgrounds and experiences within Idol, from a couple of winners, to an academic, some fan favorites, an early drop who caught my attention quite early, and one of my favorite contestants of all time - as I said earlier, this is an amazing group of people:

Season 5 Finalist (who was eliminated during a Gatekeeper round and *brought back into the game) [livejournal.com profile] abbismom
Season 5 Winner [livejournal.com profile] boxsofrain
Season 4 Winner [livejournal.com profile] chite
The rogue poet [livejournal.com profile] danialtravieso
The Dark One (and Season 5 runner up) [livejournal.com profile] darkprism
The complete professional in every sense of the word [livejournal.com profile] just_the_ash (formerly ka_crow)
The one who I wished hadn't dropped out so early! [livejournal.com profile] perrie
The always outspoken [livejournal.com profile] rm
The veteran of veterans (who has experienced both being eliminated and surviving Gatekeeper rounds) [livejournal.com profile] spydielives
The previous mentioned personal favorite [livejournal.com profile] the_dark_snack

Thank you to all of you.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The first thing we need to deal with today is the bye-outs. Individuals who are out of byes and who missed posting a topic this week.

It's a smaller list than it has been the past couple of weeks, but no less of a sad one.

Leaving us this week are:

[livejournal.com profile] ageofscorpio
[livejournal.com profile] fleeceblankie
[livejournal.com profile] sherriola

Which brings us to 117 current contestants.

*smiles* Congratulations Top 117. I really hope you took my advice and *proved* that you belonged to be in the Top Half. I saw at least one person who deciphered what I was saying there - and imagine that a few others did as well. Because the answer to your next question of "Where is the poll?" is THERE ISN'T ONE THIS WEEK.

It's the GATEKEEPER ROUND

One of the things that I hear most often is "Why don't you have a panel of judges to weed through the contestants early on?" The Gatekeepers are that panel. Hand selected individuals that I trust to give me their honest opinions on what they see working, and what they don't. Every season there comes a time when I hand over things to people that I trust, to make the best possible decisions about who will be going forward.

(Note for clarification particularly for newbies: Once the Gatekeeper round is concluded I will announce, and thank, them in a public post. They will then comment as much or little, depending on their personal preference, about their decision making process. I don't even let Gatekeepers know *for sure* who the others are until I announce it to everyone.)

We don't do this early on, because no one is really ready for it early on. You are getting to know the process and each other. At Week 10? At Week 10 you should know to bring something you are happy with each and every week. You know that anything can happen and you might be going home at any time.

Compared to other eliminations, this one is going to be fairly on the brutal side.

I'm not going to lie about that. The Gatekeeper round always is. How many are going? I'll be honest- I've given them discretion. (like every other vote they vote FOR an entry, not against.)

I would say though that the chances are very, very good that at the end of this we will be at our Top 100.

I've given them until Monday evening to make their determinations. If I get in all of their votes before that point though, I will be posting them.

Good luck to all of you.

(The entries themselves - for people wanting to catch up and read for yourselves: http://www.ljidol.info/joomla15/current/topic-10-open-topic.html . Thanks to our friends at .info)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Before I get to the actual results I wanted to take a few moments to thank the Gatekeepers.

The task before you was impossible, selecting your top 25 from a field of 54 talented writers.

Your final verdict isn't going to please everyone, but it is your collective will, and I know it was hardly an easy task. Especially considering how close the vote actually ended up being.

Pulling together your opinions and seeing where they meshed and where they differed was utterly fascinating for me and I hope for the contestants and "audience" once those results are revealed.

Thank you to
Four people who should need no introduction:

Season 1 Winner [livejournal.com profile] tinhuviel
Season 2 Winner [livejournal.com profile] tru2myart
Season 3 Winner [livejournal.com profile] welfy
Season 4 Winner [livejournal.com profile] chite

as well as
Multiple season Top 10: [livejournal.com profile] miintikwa
Two fan and contestant favorites from Season 4: [livejournal.com profile] fidgety and [livejournal.com profile] mme_furiosa

and of course

Third place finisher in the polls, but not in our hearts Season 4's [livejournal.com profile] porcelain72.

and last but not least, the one person who figured out how to get on a Gatekeeper List of Shame: (as well as filling the spot reserved for someone who was voted out in the contestant only round who IMO should have stuck around longer): [livejournal.com profile] intrepia.

The sheer talent involved in this group of 9 is more than a little bit humbling, and I am extremely grateful that you took the time out of your busy weeks to help out Idol.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Maybe it took you a minute for it to sink in. Maybe a little less.

Maybe you were one of the people who has been expecting it.

Or you're one of the folks about to be caught flat-footed.

At the start of this week I told everyone to bring your A-game. I meant it. Because THE GATEKEEPERS deserve no less.

That's right - it is time for the Gatekeeper round.

Who are the gatekeepers?

Every season I mix things up by throwing in different kinds of votes to reflect different sorts of possible demographics. Open voting for everyone, community only voting, the dreaded contestant only voting that just passed and a special week called the Gatekeeper round.

Contestant only is always nerve wrecking for me because it is a chance for me to see how the contestant's are viewing the season and each other. The Gatekeeper round, wow, that's me turning the season over to a hand-selected panel and hoping that they will exercise the judgment and eye for talent that I know that they have.

Sometimes they agree with who I would have picked if it was "Gary-only voting".*G* Some times they don't - and I think in the long run the contest is better for them and their presence.

Out there in "the real world" there is usually a panel of folks judging entries for contests after all. This really isn't any different than that. Other than it's happening *here*!*G*

I've put the season in their hand now for the last couple of times - until now.

This time, I've put it in their *hands*, by doubling the size of the panel to provide an even better, IMO, look at the state of the competition.

So, your entries are in. Now you - and I - have to wait to until Monday at 7pm EST (or until the last ballot is received and counted, whichever comes first).

The first week in the month of doom we lost 6. The next we lost 8. Then we lost 10.
I'm sure you know where we are going next -

That's right - 14!! (math is hard!*g*)

Anyone making it past this point will be in the TOP 40!!!!

Good luck.

Topic 20

Mar. 21st, 2008 01:19 pm
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Welcome to the new topic.

I promised something big, something never done before in Idol. . .

This week’s topic is “OPEN TOPIC”.

I know, you’re looking at me like “But Gary, we’ve done open topics before”. But if you noticed, I NEVER said that the TOPIC was what was big.

What is big is the stakes, and who will be making the decision.
This is the going to be the single largest cut ever. I’m not going to say how deep, but it’s pretty deep. It’s going to be painful.

Who is making the decision?

Does anyone remember back in the first couple weeks, back when people were still complaining about “Why aren’t there judges????” and I said we did that one round last year, but that I wouldn’t do it again, unless I found a way to make it work.

*smile* Never insist on something. You might get it.

Well, they aren’t “judges” per se. They are the Gatekeepers.

Your fate is in their hands.

Four hand-selected individuals whose opinions I value quite highly, with diverse backgrounds and distinctive writing voices who have skill at their craft that is well respected. They will read the entries. They will cast votes for their favorites. The people with the most votes will go forward.

No public voting. No community voting. No Gold Stars. Heck, I don’t even get a vote!!!

The only thing that stands between you and the Home Game is bringing it. If you’ve been saving up your best entry for the right moment, THIS IS THE RIGHT MOMENT.

You’re not getting through with strategy. You’re not getting through with your friends list.

Your only chance to getting to the next round is sheer skill, and maybe a little luck.

So make sure this “Open Topic” is a good one.

Good luck.

Deadline to post your entries here in this thread is Thursday March 27th at 1 pm EDT.

(and remember, this thread is ONLY FOR the link. Take the screams of anguish over to the Green Room.*g*)
[identity profile] onyxblue1.livejournal.com
(Posting for [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm.)

This week we lose two more personal AND fan favorites: [livejournal.com profile] dydan and [livejournal.com profile] johnmill79.

At this point that is something that will be happening every week. . . we have now reached the TOP 15!!!

Next week we will be at the TOP 10.

Yes. You read that correctly. 5 of you will be going this week.

Which 5? Well that's going to be up to you.

Not entirely though.

It's going to be up to you and 5 JUDGES (Who will be revealed later in the week).

They will comment on your entries with some constructive criticism - and most importantly they will select 5 of you to be EXEMPT FROM VOTING, thereby giving you an automatic spot in the final 10.

The 10 of you NOT selected will battle it out as normal for the final 5 spots.

So what topic are you going to have for this important week? Why your own of course! This is an open topic week. So make your choice wisely - your future in the game is riding on it.

You have until Friday June 8th at 2pm EST (gmt-4) to post your entries back here. GOOD LUCK!

(ETA, for anyone interested, this is week n-n-n-nineteen.)
