You have situations where someone (in the Top 15 or so) has sacrificed themselves to save a friend in 2 or 3 different seasons. Some are more overt than others. (the ones that are not were usually cases where they said "sacrifice IF so and so" to me in private rather than making a deal out of it.

In that particular case, I think a lot of people put stock in the idea that he could have won. Could he have? *shrug* He had a shot. But he could have just as easily not taken it.

That close to the finish, where a lot of emotions are high, and someone says "I'm throwing myself on a grenade for the woman I love" - that's going to get people to have opinions on things.

That said, it's also not the most surprising thing in the world either. It's pretty basic. I'd like to think that most people would give up just about anything for someone they care about.
