Is fanfic just laziness? People who pick up other people’s toys because they don’t want to bother creating their own?

Why can’t Spider-man be gay? Just take a standard white heterosexual character and change them into something more "diverse". Because people are people.

Bullying makes people stronger, and the people destroyed by it weren’t going to amount to anything regardless.

True story: back in high school there was a guy who was the master of the put-down - we'll call him A. He knew exACTly how to find someone's weak spots and then jab them as hard as possible. A was a jerk, but he was a funny jerk. I wasn't much fun to poke at, since I was usually just inclined to shrug and say "whatever". There was another guy (B), though, who just couldn't leave him alone, and was always trying to get the best of an argument with him. Thing is, he was soooooo pathetic that his insults were more laughable than anything else. One day, A is picking on B, and B is getting more and more flustered and failing to come back, despite dubbing himself the ComeBack King (seriously... this kid had problems). Eventually, during a pause in A's eloquent diatribe, B sputters out....

"yeah... well.... you're a GRAPE!"

A was left speechless, for perhaps the first time in his life. Lamest. Insult. Ever. But it worked!

Ever since, it's been my favorite thing to randomly insult people with. It gets 'em every time.

All of which is to say, of course, that you are looking really grape today. ;)

Hahaha. I wondered that all the time with some of your more...er...socially aware GRs from Season 8 :P (Usually the ones I was laughing hysterically over, NGL.) Hell, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to link a few of 'em from the most politically correct, hippy-dippy, grab-assy Kumbaya blogs and LJ comms I could find, hit the dirt, and watch the fireworks. (Okay, totally lying there - there's no way I could have stayed out of the fray if they'd shown up.) Not only would it have been good entertainment, it might have also gotten us some new recruits! (Hey, whenever we were trying to get new members at HE, we'd be like "dammit, we need someone to flame us and land us on Fandom Wank! Free press!")

Have you ever actually had someone stumble in and take your trollbait seriously? I don't mean shit like Lamegate where someone takes a truly innocent comment out of context and bitches at you for it, I mean some random n00b sees a GR like...well...this one, and flips their shit.

I once wrote fanfic, but it was in the years before we called it fan fiction. My choices were Star Trek and Lythande. Wow. I actually typed that. Oh well.

GR- Do you ever put your foot down with your kids? Like tell them they can change their own diapers? Because I just did that. I mean the kid is potty trained.

OKAY, basic overview was:

1) I am remembering "you're a grape" for future reference. I simply must use this at some point!

2) Best insult battle non-sequitur I've ever heard: "Yo-Yo Ma's so stupid, he took his cello to be repaired because someone told him his music was baroque." Unsurprisingly, this was overheard on the campus of a liberal arts college. Also unsurprisingly, it completely shut down the verbal sparring match. The people who didn't get the joke were just like "wtf what?!" and the people who did get the joke, promptly admitted defeat. It was pretty damn brilliant, gotta say.

Mine has no concept of answering me if I ask him if he has to go to the potty. None. But if I leave him naked, for a little while there he was going in the potty when he needed to.

Love Cracked :) And I actually really enjoyed that article! Gave me a whole new perspective on fanfic, seriously. I never thought of retelling legends as connected to that genre, but I admit it ties in in some cool ways.

Hmmm - have I? There have been a couple where someone in the community has taken it as serious. But, off the top of my head, I can't think of a time when a random stranger has come in and went off about it. I'm sure there have been minor cases of it, but nothing that sticks out in my memory.

Also several published authors have shorts where they use others worlds or characters, which is essentially a form of fan-fic as well. :) Star-trek reboot is a movie form of fan-fic for the original series. :)

Continuing the toy analogy, I think it's more like seeing a really great toy and wanting to play with it for a bit. I see all writing as a way to raise the bar on your own skills, so fan-fic can be a tool, but it is also a great hobby. It's one palce you can write shorts and get readers for them. There are many reasons one might choose it.
