Green Room - Week 12 - Day 5
Apr. 16th, 2013 08:55 amA terrorist attack in Boston. Massive earthquakes over the past week in Iran. Selena Gomez wearing a bindi.
There are just some things where the images from a story stick with you, and you just can’t seem to shake them.
I hope you, and yours, are all well today and aren’t too distracted by any of those above news stories…. Or anymore distracted than the rest of the planet is.
After all, you have a massive news story of your own – the new poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/643566.html and we will soon have a Top 4!

Date: 2013-04-16 01:18 pm (UTC)The guy who owns SO's PT Job was there yesterday cheering on a friend. He hasn't said a word since checking in to say they were both OK.
Even though I wasn't actually there, I'm still sort of in shock. My head is swimming in some kind of weird surreal area. As a little kid I lived two blocks from the site, and except for the stores and hotels it all basically looks the same as it did back then, so every time the news does an aerial shot I can feel my eyes welling up.

It's weird when you sign on and everyone is talking about something big and horrible that's been going on for a while already and you have no idea what they're talking about.
The word "addict" comes to mind.

Date: 2013-04-16 01:42 pm (UTC)Yeah, I've heard Sim-type games have that crack addict quality. Do I need to call an intervention?

Date: 2013-04-16 02:00 pm (UTC)One of my now non-LJ friends got into the Sims when they first came out. IIRC correctly the pull was so strong for her that she started neglecting everything and everybody. Luckily her husband pulled her out of it, and I don't think she's touched it since. Or, if she has, she only plays it in small increments, like she'll have a timer on or something.
I just don't want you going down that path, that's all <3 <3 <3

Date: 2013-04-16 02:09 pm (UTC)A year or so ago it was Lord of the Rings Online.
When Sims first came out waybackwhen, I bought it and played it for freaking ever, all day and all night to the exclusion of all else, but I sucked at it.
I was constantly making characters and failing again and again - sad clowns kept showing up at my parties, social workers reposessed my children, my people had little frownie faces over their heads all the time. And still I played on. I even got sadistic for a while. I'd make a house and when the Sim went inside I would replace the door with a wall panel and not include a bathroom. I think it was my psychological response to constant failure while hearing from other people how great their games were going.
Anyway, this one has pets. Pets, I say. And the animation of the pets is pretty awesome. Also, it's easier to play, or easier to play without trying to socialize. I still kinda suck at the party scene, but then, who are we talking about? Duh.
As of yet I have not bought my Sims a computer, because playing a computer game with a character that is playing a computer game is a level of meta I just don't need to explore. :)

Date: 2013-04-16 02:12 pm (UTC)I stayed up Far Too Late last night doing piddly-shit that didn't need to be done, like trying on my B&W dress to make sure it still fit (it's been a few years since I last wore it) and seeing how it looked with the accessories I'd chosen for the Gala this Saturday. Why I needed to do this at 1:30 AM, I have no idea.
Fortunately, the gown still fits and everything looks good together, so at least that's good news!

Date: 2013-04-16 02:45 pm (UTC)I read all of the entries yesterday and I don't know if it's coincidence or what but they were all so sad. It's almost like we felt what was coming, that tremor in the universe. I ache for the people in Boston.

Date: 2013-04-16 03:54 pm (UTC)We have some version of the Sims game for the PS3 and I was never able to get the guy out of his house. He spends a lot of time crying, eating, sleeping and cleaning. I think my dude is manic depressive no lie. My husband wants us to start a new game but I'm reluctant to leave my dude alone. He's so sad!

Date: 2013-04-16 05:47 pm (UTC)Mine is Sims 2 on the computer. I've bought all the expansion packs and accessory packs and play it quite regularly still. It used to consume all of my free time, but it's lost a bit of it's shiny lately and I've cut back on playing time considerably. I'm terrible at it, but I still love it. :D
I've not been as enamored of Sims 3, so haven't played it as much. I only have a few of the expansion packs and accessory packs for it and sadly, Pets is not one of them.

Date: 2013-04-16 06:23 pm (UTC)Edit - And the "fun" thing - I bought sprinklers for my Sims garden, and my Sim got stressed at work, came home and turned on the sprinkler on her own, switched into her swimsuit and started playing like she was a kid. It was hilarious.

Date: 2013-04-16 06:29 pm (UTC)They can also fish, and they drink out of the toilet. :)
You can befriend stray animals and invite them in. Also there are wild horses and falcons and racoons get into your trash and it's pretty hilarious.
My cats are quite the hunters, but unfortunately they leave their dead lizards and bugs lying around (you know, just like real life). :)

Date: 2013-04-17 04:25 pm (UTC)My son used to play Roller Coaster Tycoon a lot, where you build your own theme park. He'd have these massive rollercoasters emptying out into the swimming pool, which was bad on both sides.
Once, when he was seven, he removed the walls from the tiger exhibit to see what would happen. The tiger got out, but then a helicopter came and took it away. He cried. I liked the fact that the game compensated for his abuse of park safety. ;)
