Ah, the Intersection! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/550720.html

It’s always guaranteed to be a good time, even if it might seem intimidating at first.

The first step to doing it is putting yourself out there. So, who needs to find a partner?

Which topic are you going to take, and why do you think it is the best fit for your strengths?

Is anyone interested in helping me brainstorm a plot-blockage in the novel I'm writing? I've written a post on my LJ. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just a query here - aren't there 59 people left? Does that mean there will be a threesome, or what happens to the extra person, assuming someone doesn't drop out?

WAIT, aren't there an odd number of contestants? If we had 69 and knocked out 10...what kind of diabolical scheme is this?!

ANYWAYS, if any of you lovely creatures don't mind being seen with me in public, I could totally use a partner! I'd prob'ly be better at taking up the part of a stirring straw in a drink, as drinking and stirring pots are my specialties, but I'm totally flexible on that.

*tries to give big, sweet, innocent looking puppydog eyes to the workroom*

*is fooling absolutely no one*

Oh, whatever! :D

ETA: email is pikacharma *at* gmail *dot* com (Durrrr, contact info helps!)

I'll put out the same offer-- anyone interested in partnering with me?

Please email or PM me!

Has anyone done this before, and have an idea of how the whole things works?

Each of you takes a topic, and writes on it, and you mention on your entry who your intersection partner is. There is no 'rule' as such as to how much your entries should intersect - some people like to write two halves of a story, or the same story from two perspectives, some people like to choose a common theme and write that way...

Probably the best thing is to give an example - last year [livejournal.com profile] xo_kizzy_xo and I intersected where she wrote about going to the races as a young girl (fiction) and I wrote about being the horse (also fiction, as I am, of course, a cat). Then [livejournal.com profile] imafarmgirl and I wrote about belief in God: she wrote about her personal beliefs in Creator and I wrote about Pascal's wager on belief in a deity.

Some people have pet hates about having to read one first, then the other, but others couldn't care - if you do choose to write something which is better one way round than another, make sure you let people know on the thread so they can do it in the right order :)

Hope that helps! I'm sure others will have some good advice.

Yep, several of us have done it before. Whomever your partner is, your votes and their votes will be tallied up, and the team or teams with the lowest total votes will be eliminated.

So if you got 10 votes, and your partner had 15, your total would be 25 between the two of you, but you'll each still have your own spot in the polls. It's a good idea to put a link at either the top or bottom of your own entry to let readers know who your partner is and link over to their entry.

Hahahaha! Though of course, who isn't? ;)

These were great examples-- thank you so much for taking the time to explain the possibilities to a n00b. :D

There was that one poll where trio's actually competed against each other ;)

So there's no guaranteed poll setup.

If anyone's interested in partnering up, please either message me here or e-mail me at brittanydaniels(at)msn(dot)com.

Wait . . . should I be pimping myself out? Talking myself up? Telling people about myself (especially since most of my entries are fiction)? I'm pretty bad at all that. Let's just say I'm awesome and leave it at that. ^_^

ETA: Partner found! ^_^

Funny, for me this is the most complex setup yet.

Thanks for taking the time to provide helpful details!

I'm no longer available...

Some thoughts on the writing side of intersections*:

I think some the best pieces idol has seen were intersections, simply because an idea created/bounced/woven between two people has an incredible chance to be incredibly awesome.

In my opinion, the best intersection pieces are actually fiction, because the ability to write two sides of an idea, or two stories that link up, is dramatically lessened with nonfiction — even if they're both about the same general topic, they don't quite have the puzzle piece fit that fiction pieces offer. But there are always exceptions to the rule ;)

Last week's [livejournal.com profile] alephz and [livejournal.com profile] rattsu was an incredible intersection, for example.

I would take caution in making sure your pieces they don't overlap too much — I think readers do want to see two different pieces; too much interlocking, or too similar of a viewpoint, is probably not necessarily good. But on the other hand, while two entries that intersect in name of partner only don't seem that much fun.

In terms of choosing partners, if you've been reading everyone, you should have a list of people that you think are just awesome writers, a list of people that you have become friends with, and a list of people you vote for but aren't your cup of tea. The third group is harder but can surprise you, the second group are probably the easiest to work with, and the first (especially if they think of you the same way) can create some astonishing things.

Play to your individual strengths. Don't be afraid to experiment. Read each other's work often while it's being written (if you can). Trust your partner.

-

*I say the writing side because there's more to be said about the politics side, choosing a partner with high vote counts, etc., but it's not quite my interest; I'll leave that to someone else :)
