A few words from clauderainsrm:

Icarus.

Some people flew with it, some flew right into the sun without hesitating (with their own brand of sun-proofing), and it apparently stumped a few into taking that bye dive into the sea.

But overall it also produced some really cool entries.

Before we get to them, the usual business to attend to of saying farewell to people who will not be making that journey to 100 with us.

Goodbye to all of you, and thank you for coming out this season.

As for the business at hand, there were 2 people who came into the competition from Second Chance Idol this week, and some minor tweaking of the tribes. Other than that, most people stayed where they were.

The lowest vote-getter from each tribe will be eliminated. As usual.

So make sure that, if you like the entry, you vote for them! With things are tight as they tend to get around here, every single vote of support counts! So make sure to let other people know if you see something great that isn't getting the response you think it should be receiving!

Aww at the drops and bye-outs! I added 3circledsun as a friend and I really like that guy! I didn't get a chance to know the others and that makes me sad. I know and respect impoetry feom last season, but had hoped to get to know him more this season! I hope they all home game it!

I clicked on the poll before Gary voted....seeing all those 0's was weird and depressing. I'm glad he does that :)

Gary said no, once the deadline passed for SCI sign ups that was it. I think SCI was only meant to run short term, so he had to limit how many people could play.

I hope snarkerdoodle doesn't mind, but I miss his/her (ack, I realized I have no idea!) numbers comment a lot and know s/he can't do it from a plane so I am borrowing it for the week. In case anybody else was curious too...

This list shows the number of people in the tribe and then the count of 'live' entries and byes within those tribes:

Tribe 1 -- 20 people (17 live entries, 3 byes)

There are people out there who, for whatever reason, don't read until the last day or so and vote for the entries they like the best out of the ones on the bottom. (Rather than just supporting the people who are already doing well.)

There is also the fact that people have different tastes in what they enjoy, often wildly differing tastes, you get a hodgepodge of what they are going to say is and is not "good".

it's really a timing issue - I usually don't spend much time online over the weekend, which leaves Mondays and Tuesdays to read/comment and vote...

Usually I ask for folks on my flist to read/vote Monday/Tuesdays cause well that's when I'm reading/commenting/voting myself..

Well that's kind of my point really. That there's no real need to suggest shenanigans or that someone is a weaker writer, especially if they're getting more votes. There's all sorts of reasons why the totals end up very different by the end of a few days of voting compared to the beginning. Some people just like being strategic and waiting until their vote really counts. I know I usually don't do any kind of suggestions or mention of the poll until it's been up for a few days and I can see who I think might need some support.

Thank you to everyone who clarified that. I should have put a qualifier at the end like "LOL" I wasn't serious. I knew they were closed and if I get eliminated I'm done for this season. I was just saying that cause I am really afraid that I'm going to bite it this time.

It's LJ. Writing is how we make friends here, especially new ones. So although the argument over "it's only f-lists that matter and it's a popularity contest really" will never end, the truth of the matter is that if your writing is strong enough, it'll win out regardless. The further in the contest you go, the more people resent those they perceive to be coasting on f-list support and eventually backlash hits, so it all cancels out. But one of the reasons I signed up alts to compete this time round was to disprove the perception that it's all about friend support and so far, my feelings on the matter seem to be pretty much borne out.

If your writing is good enough, it'll survive the polls for many, many weeks to come.

I think SCI is going to bring us 3 this week, but yes, we're getting mighty close to the realm of contestants numbering in only the two-digits.

Well, as Gary mentioned, individual taste regarding quality of entries varies from reader to reader.

That said, one way that some writers who lean heavily on their friends lists get eliminated is during "contestants only" weeks or "gatekeeper" weeks. To whit, if your support is genuinely from outside of the contest, you have to get lucky to make it through those weeks.

And, hey, in regards to the gatekeeper week, you can have a ton of support within the contest and if the gatekeepers just aren't all that in to your work, you're out of luck.

In regards to the popularity contest argument, well, that is true even if people are voting for a writer because they like their work - it just happens that its the writing that makes the person popular, know what I mean? There's really no way to separate "person getting votes because people think they're a cool person" from "people getting votes because people they're a cool person because of their writing." Those two sets of people are all of us anytime anyone votes for us.

There are so many things beyond our control in this sort of contest. The things within our control including our own entries, our comments, our votes and our choice of icons. Once I accepted that last season, I became happy for the people who survived and sympathetic with the people who were eliminated no matter who they were from week to week.
