A few words from clauderainsrm:

Part writing competition. Part out-of-control roller-coaster. LJ Idol is a writing experience like no other.

Every poll is someone’s first time experiencing LJ IDOL, especially as we get closer to the Top 50 - so if this is your first time here, welcome!

Each week I post a topic (or in the case of this week multiple topics for them to select from), they write an entry and submit it for the poll.

The topics this week were: Intersubjectivity, Shibusa, Rapture of the deep, Captcha the flag and Overwatch

I post the poll and, in the words of Jeff Probst, the power shifts to the hands of the Jury. In this case, that is you, the voters.

Read the entries, comment on them (who doesn’t love feedback) and vote for your favorites to stay in one more week!

Then we repeat the process until we are down to one person left standing - our Winner, the LJ IDOL.

The poll is broken down into two groups (or tribes) - the main tribe and a “Redemption Tribe”. The contestants in the Redemption Tribe ended up there when there is a tie for who will be eliminated. One bad week is all it takes to go home, but with Redemption, if you hang on through that bad week, you still have a chance!

Two contestants from Redemption and three from the main poll will be eliminated this week. So if you read something that you love, make sure to tell people about it, so that they can have the chance to read it, and fall for it as well!

Unfortunately, we had a few people who had to drop out this week. When I say that they are “extremely talented” and that they will be “greatly missed”, that’s an understatement. I could have actually skipped that and just given you the names - and those who have been here before today would have been able to fill out that information for themselves.

You really haven't messed with the "tribe" membership much this season. It used to be interesting when you changed up the tribes and constituted them on different grounds every so often to keep things interesting, esp since people tended to get closer to the members of their tribe in any given week (lord knows why).

We've had one great big tribe here for unusually long.

I always kind of liked when you divided them by friends list size, even though that presumably disadvantages me by putting me in with all those people with gosh darn too many friends god damn their eyes! But it seemed a very fair shake for the small fish.

And then sometimes you'd put all the top vote getters in a tribe and I'd try to shoot you with lasers from my eyes because it would mean one of the top vote getters would inevitably be lost before their time.

I wonder if big friends lists mean as much as they used to, though. I still have a fair number of LJ friends, but because I haven't been actually active here for some time, I suspect it doesn't help much and also expect that a lot of those friends aren't actually here much either.

I have a relatively large FL, and it seems pretty active, but the majority of them are - or have been - in Idol. So I agree that a large Flist isn't all that helpful, all things considered.

Yikes! I thought the folks coming in from LCI would come into Redemption, not the main tribe! Redemption is a scary place right now. Is it two weeks with no ties that must occur before Redemption is folded back in?

I believe that is correct, yes.

On the other hand, odds are maybe 50/50 that once Redemption gets folded back in, the tribes may be broken up into some other fashion - alphabetical, by topic, by Flist size, or by whimsy/random draw/die roll... so you may not be any safer!!

Not sure if this is a new LJ thing or a new LJ mistake (*really* hoping it's a glitch). If you click on the name of the poll, it can be viewed as normal.

I have the count from this poll, and a question for someone with an impressive spreadsheet.

There are 11 folks in the redemption poll and 49 in the regular poll, with only one bye!

Here's the question: last week the main poll started with 41, three were voted out, eight joined from second chance, and two dropped. But 41-3+8-2=44 so somehow I've lost five people. What am I missing?

I don't have a giant spreadsheet, I just do the math from week to week so I don't have anything to send you. I'm certain the poll is right - after all these people all wrote entries, I'm just curious about where my disconnected numbers went wrong. Not a big deal.

Nevermind, I figured it out. There are +13 from the last two polls of LCI because of the ways the various deadlines aligned, not just the +8 of this week. Whew.

I'm not sure about the numbers from week to week, but I was missing people from my spreadsheet too until I went and looked (I was missing Medleymisty, where they'd moved from LCI).

I can send you my spreadsheet if you want; my numbers agree with the poll now; I'm not sure who you are missing...

I just figured it out. This is the first big-game poll that the LCI folks from weeks 2 & 3 are in, so there are 13 new folks not just 8. Thanks for asking a different question, somehow that broke things loose for me.
