Let's see, what has been going on this weekend... *scans the news* Doesn't look like much of anything.

Just a normal everyday weekend here in the US.

Oh, Richard Simmons died. That was sad... Dr Ruth, Shannon Doherty...

Hmmm... what else...

OH! Yeah, the news that everyone is talking about, the Week 2 poll just went up!   therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1144477.html

That's pretty big news, all around the world!

For real though - i am glad that former President is OK. I can't say "this isn't Amercia", because anyone who remembers the 60s, 70s, and into the early 80s knows better than that. But it's certainly not who we ASPIRE to be.

Let's be who we say we are.

(especially those of you who say they aree damn foreigners. Be that instead!!!  ;) )

I was in a stand-up comedy workshop when the news that shall not be mentioned came out. Someone made a comment about "dodging a bullet" so I initially thought the whole thing was a joke. Not really the place you want to be learning about serious news!

Since a few people seemed curious about the "Skip the Small Talk" event I went to on Friday night, I'll share that it felt like a good event. I talked to a bunch of strangers one-on-one for ten minutes each. They had cards out on tables with deep questions you could discuss with each other. I ended up giving my contact info to three people, and two of them texted me already. No idea if it'll lead to future friendships, but it was a nice way to meet new people without worrying about if people would be open to talking or not.

I talked about the memoir I'm working on with a couple of people. Most of my day yesterday, when I wasn't at the workshop or going to a free comedy show at the same venue that night, was working on my memoir some more. I've added around 7,500 words to it in the last day and a half, so that's how much of a roll I'm on and why I couldn't give up that momentum in order to write an Idol entry instead. I've hit over 100K words already and I feel like I'm getting closer to the finish line with the parts I've been fleshing out and writing. There's still a lot to fill in though.

Speed friending instead of speed dating?
I could definitely use an event like that.
I mean we make friends here on this app... but I need new LOCAL friends. People I can be "I can get away from my mom for about 5 hours, can we just chill?"

Pretty much! That's how I described it to someone else. I don't like the pressure that comes with dating, I prefer to make friends and then see if something develops later, so that's part of why it appealed to me. No pressure of expectations.

And exactly, I was looking to meet locally.

That sounds like a really good event. Even though I'm an extrovert, I am not much into small talk, because why waste time discussing the weather or other things that aren't very important? I would want to actually get to know people. I'm glad you have some contacts from it. :)

YAY you!!! Over 100K is a book! I know it's not your first, but awesome job! *\o/*

I absolutely feel the same way. Let me get to know you on a deeper level!

I'm a little concerned at how long it's going to end up being. My last estimate was like 130k words but at the rate this is going with how much I still have left, it may even end up being 150k words. I don't think memoirs are supposed to be that long, but I am first and foremost writing this for myself. Does it matter if people won't want to read a 150k word memoir? Hopefully I'm overestimating at this point. The chapter I've been working on this weekend is probably close to done and a lot of my remaining chapters should be on the shorter side.

As a frequent reader of autobiographies and memoirs, I have enjoyed ones that are little more than a pamphlet and ones that are as large as a run-on Tolstoy novel. For the ones that keep my attention - length is not an issue. In fact, sometimes the shorter ones are more annoying for glossing over things. But as you said, it is first and foremost for yourself. Get it all written as you want it. Then, later, you can worry about editing (longer or shorter) for others if you wish.

And then consider making an audio version (if you hadn't already). :)

Thank you for your thoughts! I feel like all of the memoirs/autobiographies I've read seem to be around the same length and what I've written so far definitely seems longer than those. But then I've mostly read ones by celebrities I like.

I actually hadn't thought about doing an audio version but that is a great idea. This would be the perfect story for me to do an audiobook from my own voice. Lord knows I've verbally shared plenty of the story with people already
