I was looking over the Weeks totals to see who was in the running to hit 200 when I noticed something unexpected. It shouldn't have been, but apparently it fell off my radar.
Over the last couple weeks, someone joined the Luna club... and then another did as well.
There are some numbers that are special because they are a "big number" - like 100 weeks survived. Or 200 weeks survived... those are numbers you can look at and instantly think "Yeah, OK, I know why that's special..."
But, if you are new to Idol in the last few years, you might not know about the Luna. Because the last person to reach it was a couple years ago.
agirlnamedluna was an early Idol contestant who was the 2nd person to ever reach the 100 weeks survived. She was the first to reach 150, and well on track to be the first to ever break 200, years before anyone else would have even dreamed that they could be doing it.
She used to wait until the very last moment to post, some of that was because that was her process. Some of it was because she knew it drove me crazy. :)
In 2014, on the night of the deadline of what would have been her 160th LJ Idol entry, she died, at her computer. Her entry was still on the screen when they found her. She left behind a daughter, an internet full of grieving friends, and a competition that was never the same without her.
So winning is wonderful. Hitting 100 weeks is great. Whoever is the first to hit 200 is going to have something no one can ever take away from them.
But 159 weeks is a big deal to me. It's special. It's worth celebrating. It's a very rare for someone to be able to join the "Luna Club". Of the well over 1,000 people who have entered this space, only 4 have ever reached this moment.. (roina_arwen, emo_snal, halfshellvenus and kickthehobbit) Now we add 2 more to that list of legends.
Congratulations to
alycewilson and
bleodswean - and thank you for helping to keep Luna's memory alive.

Date: 2022-06-20 01:32 pm (UTC)I also remember Luna but had never heard the full story of her untimely death before. She was a fierce competitor, and we were often running neck and neck for votes. I still can't believe she's gone.

Date: 2022-06-20 02:24 pm (UTC)Season 9! halfshellvenus convinced me to sign up. And it's been so much fun (with a touch of drama but ya know)! I sure miss K and her hubby. So many folks have just wandered away. But it's wonderful that you've been steady throughout my time here!
