The new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/1001426.html

Cynthia and I were having a conversation the other day about how little things have changed - as much as we would like to think otherwise. People still gather around their campfires listening to stories. It's just some of those campfires are electronic. There are internet campfires and television/movies campfires... flickering lights and a release of energy serving as a focus to bring people together. (OK, most of our conversation wasn't about *that*, but I'm trying to tie it together... :D)

Where is your mind racing to with this topic?

Can't tell you how much KFP is going to love this week's topic. Ironically, we are just moving into a unit in Cub Scouts where we talk about things like skits and theater. I'm pretty sure he'll be inspired for this one. Fun!

Not sure where I'm going to go with it yet. I'm going to see my sister this weekend. Maybe that will spark something. :)

Skits and theater takes me back to one of my few sleepaway camps.

I still don't remember any damn campfire, but maybe there was a bonfire at the last dance? I'm old.

I'll be interested to see if the visit joggles your memories.

I'm thinking I could either go with something about my camp experiences or a ghost story, either directly from or inspired by my family.

One of my favorite camp experiences was the Music and Drama camp (MAD) at the camp associated with our church. We even put on a concert at the end!

I'm curious as to whether there is there actually a morality clause in the new terms of service for LJ as some are claiming. Anyone know? I'm another perhaps-foolish accept-button pusher here, with vague plans to back up my journal off site someday. Though from the legal perspective, I will say that I think the way they handled the "non binding translation" language was particularly poorly executed unless they had a goal other than the obvious one.

What would a morality clause even be?

Some people get paranoid just to be over cautious.

I prefer paranoia for adventure! And profit!

And indeed, I do not know what a morality clause even would look like and I occasionally review these kinds of agreements for adventure and profit. I assumed it would be something along the lines of "LiveJournal reserves the right to delete content that does not align with the moral standards of LiveJournal."

Nope, none of that, only LJs that violate some law or another.

I just read through the whole thing and I'm not seeing any morality clauses. It really doesn't look that much different than the other LJ TOS's in the past. The only difference I'm seeing is that the acts referred to are Russian rather than American.

It is a shoddy translation, I agree. Witness section 10.2 which contains the clause "however, in some circumstances it reserves the right to request User to confirm such an information."

I need to back up my journal as well, but that's only for archival purposes in case the internet explodes one day.

Yes, backup is what I was thinking too. So much has changed in the landscape of the Internet since this LJ adventure began!

I actually want to go super old school and print a bound copy of my entries. Not sure why, but it seems like a fun thing to have. I've been meaning to get around to that for the last five years or so now, at least.

The whole concept of the English translation not controlling was handled badly, too. I'm sure there's precedent for a contract clause that says "in the event of a discrepancy between this translation and the original, the original controls," but they didn't exactly say that when they said "this translation is non-binding."

I still have to read the minster in its mother tongue coz I can, but the closest to it in English was the requirement to "mark under-18" content and prohibition of "political solicitation", whichever the latter means. It also appears amoral and anti-free speech :-)

My mind went to crack again.

But I consider that a good thing!

Especially with the way work is going (not just the stress, but how many of my waking hours are spent on it right now), the crack sure makes MY life more fun. Or _any_ fun, really, at the moment. :O

Damn it...
I haven't been to camp in 35 years, not counting the summer where I worked as a counselor. There was no camp fire... it was a damn daycamp.

Would people be angered if I really used the prompt as a prompt this time instead of being exact?

No one wants a journalistic article on camp horrors that aren't Friday the 13th... do they?

Help.

I would definitely read an article on camp horrors! I go camping all the time and my mind immediately went to "scary story you tell around the campfire," but after reading your comment I could absolutely see you going in the direction of the dangers of camping and having an open fire in the woods! Or any of the dangers associated with camping.. 😁😁

Yes, my mind went there too, at first, but it is too obvious:-D

That wasn't what I meant.

I meant obscure horror camp films. Although looking through my collection this isn't one of my things I'm good at.

I'm all about horrors of any kind tbh!

I like prompt as prompt entries as long as it's pretty clear how you got there from the prompt. Sounds like you'd have no problem here.

I'm dating myself pretty horribly with this, but the phrase "It was a dark and stormy night" takes my mind straight to this, almost every time:

I may have to assume a persona I hate this week. Although I just had an idea about how to approach the topic that might make my Wagging Finger a little easier to take. For me, if no one else.
