Green Room - Week 8 - Day 7
People find figures from the past of other cultures to be fascinating. It’s not just an “American thing”, or even a “Western thing”. The cultural appropriation of grabbing something you think is interesting, and using it as your own, without any true understanding has been going on, well, as long as things have been going on… one village would find a symbol (or often deity) from another village and go “Yeah, us too!”
So really, is it any surprise the in a global marketplace that you will find that people who see something that “everyone knows” will grab that image and use it to make a buck?
Even if they really don’t “get it”?
Yes. I’m talking about HITLER FRIED CHICKEN http://www.ibtimes.com/hitler-fried-chicken-kfc-may-sue-restaurant-thailand-replacing-colonel-sanders-adolf-hitler-1336611 and the general trend in Southeast Asia.
I suppose we should just be grateful that they don’t advertise how they only use gas ovens… *sigh*
You would think they would at least do a *little* research before embracing the image… this *is* the age of the internet after all… you would think that… oh, sorry, look at the time. I have more to say on this, but right now I’m late to meet someone for brunch at Vlad-the-Breakfast-Impaler. They serve everything kabob style!
You have a poll to keep you busy until I get back. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/673598.html

That said, it's actually scary that people don't know what Hitler stood for anymore. Even among people who should have no difficulty accessing all the information they could possibly want, it's deemed something from long ago therefore no longer interesting. Which is a scary trend, IMO.

That aside.
I got more paperwork done and turned into my ssi lawyer.
Now I must get of my bed and fill out paperwork for the next school year for my children.

I got to spend an hour yesterday dropping things from the sixth floor balcony at work. For science! I love my job. I'm still kind of amazed they gave us permission to do it, though. We did all the necessary safety things, though! Man, it was fun.

I am being kept very busy with reading and voting and such. I hope to finish at least three of the polls today. We'll see!
In other news, art fair was fun, but ridiculously hot and crowded. I got some nice prints (a tentacle monster, a troll, and a weird surreal night scene involving a frog carousel and a giant koi fish... my tastes are pretty predictable) and some gifts for other people, so mission accomplished this weekend.
I got two rejection letters yesterday. Maybe today after reading All The Things (tm) I'll send more things out. Sometimes it's a slog. Ok, maybe always it's a slog.
And I still want fried chicken, though perhaps without Hitler attached. That seems a little heavy.

Those prints definitely sound like you. :)
Sorry about the rejections. I got one too a while ago. I don't know - maybe self-publishing is the way to go for me.
I hope you're doing okay.

Mmm, fried chicken...

However, I must applaud you on the tentacle monster and the troll. This sounds like a metaphorical representation of various fandoms I've been in.

Is anyone but me not getting comment notifications? I'm getting nothing, not even, "Hi, there's another Green Room post!"

Also, am I the only one who thinks it's funny that KFC picked the word "distasteful" to describe it? :P
Did anyone click through to the JCP teapot? I think some people are over using their imaginations on that one.
I I have voted in one poll. Have been offline all morning and am really freaking wiped. will recommence reading and voting in a few hours.

Oh yeah, I can see that now. Instead of Hell's Kitchen, it's Der Führer's Fryer. The chicken's always really dry though, because there's NO JUICE ALLOWED.

This also reminds me of Hitler's Deli that opened in Mumbai a few years back. People protested that though, so they apparently changed their name.
I swear, people!
I did laugh at your choice of brunch places.
Wish me luck, GR. I head to the doctor's office today. Not sure what I'll expect, to be honest.

Also, nice icon. :)

On a scale of 1 to 10, how surely am I going to hell if I admit to audibly laughing at that? >_> (ETA: It was a cringe sort of laugh, but still.)
And I gotta admit, I'm a bit curious about this place. As has been mentioned upthread, I've had Thai chicken wings before, and they were amazing and delicious and everything else, though genocidal dictators hellbent on world domination are just a BIT unappetizing! And I'm not even sure what to make of the "Nazi Chic" thing mentioned in the article. It sounds like something that belongs on either 1) The Onion, or 2) a fairly peculiar fetish website. I....yeah. I'm just gonna back away slowly from the internet now >_>

That said, I'm wondering whether this is the same class of pun as the one about the legal fetishist who got off on a technicality?

JK Rowling has written a detective novel under a pseudonym. Cuckoo Calling by Robert Galbraith.
She wanted to try a new genre without the hype and pressure from her Harry Potter success. That secret didn't last long.
