Green Room - Week 8 - Day 7

People find figures from the past of other cultures to be fascinating. It’s not just an “American thing”, or even a “Western thing”. The cultural appropriation of grabbing something you think is interesting, and using it as your own, without any true understanding has been going on, well, as long as things have been going on… one village would find a symbol (or often deity) from another village and go “Yeah, us too!”

So really, is it any surprise the in a global marketplace that you will find that people who see something that “everyone knows” will grab that image and use it to make a buck?

Even if they really don’t “get it”?

Yes. I’m talking about HITLER FRIED CHICKEN http://www.ibtimes.com/hitler-fried-chicken-kfc-may-sue-restaurant-thailand-replacing-colonel-sanders-adolf-hitler-1336611 and the general trend in Southeast Asia.

I suppose we should just be grateful that they don’t advertise how they only use gas ovens… *sigh*

You would think they would at least do a *little* research before embracing the image… this *is* the age of the internet after all… you would think that… oh, sorry, look at the time. I have more to say on this, but right now I’m late to meet someone for brunch at Vlad-the-Breakfast-Impaler. They serve everything kabob style!

You have a poll to keep you busy until I get back. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/673598.html

I must be their target audience because I wanna go there and see if the chicken's any good. =p

[identity profile] xo-kizzy-xo.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta admit it's attention-catching, which I think is the whole point.

[identity profile] agirlnamedluna.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know you had assets in South-East Asia, Gary :3

That said, it's actually scary that people don't know what Hitler stood for anymore. Even among people who should have no difficulty accessing all the information they could possibly want, it's deemed something from long ago therefore no longer interesting. Which is a scary trend, IMO.

[identity profile] ashgaelsonaria.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
No the scarry trend is that there are people who believe that the holocaust never really happened and its all a conspiracy designed to discredit Hitler and the Nazi party.

[identity profile] agirlnamedluna.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a scary trend, too. There are many, unfortunately. Then there's those who think he was just right, too, and actually did a lot of good.

Ugh I know someone like that. They are bat shit crazy.

[identity profile] ashgaelsonaria.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Insert random response here.
That aside.
I got more paperwork done and turned into my ssi lawyer.
Now I must get of my bed and fill out paperwork for the next school year for my children.

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Gary, I'm pretty sure you killed the green room by talking about Hitler...

I got to spend an hour yesterday dropping things from the sixth floor balcony at work. For science! I love my job. I'm still kind of amazed they gave us permission to do it, though. We did all the necessary safety things, though! Man, it was fun.
ext_224364: (Default)

[identity profile] x-disturbed-x.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So that's why it's so quiet here! I knew there was a reason.

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my theory, at least. Sometimes it's hard to know what to say when Gary posts something with an odd or controversial topic. Do you address the subject of his post or just talk about other stuff?

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe so! Silly people.

I'm not getting notifications, so maybe that's somehow part of it, too?

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, didn't Florida outlaw the internet? You hardcore thug you, posting online!

The H word. Now the F word! LOL

Not determining the height of the balcony using a barometer, I trust? :)

I only have a little time to write today and instead I'm on tumblr! That site is really sucking up my free time.

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I can relate. Tumblr means I get less sleep because I just can't put it down!

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, now I want fried chicken.

I am being kept very busy with reading and voting and such. I hope to finish at least three of the polls today. We'll see!

In other news, art fair was fun, but ridiculously hot and crowded. I got some nice prints (a tentacle monster, a troll, and a weird surreal night scene involving a frog carousel and a giant koi fish... my tastes are pretty predictable) and some gifts for other people, so mission accomplished this weekend.

I got two rejection letters yesterday. Maybe today after reading All The Things (tm) I'll send more things out. Sometimes it's a slog. Ok, maybe always it's a slog.

And I still want fried chicken, though perhaps without Hitler attached. That seems a little heavy.

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs*

Those prints definitely sound like you. :)

Sorry about the rejections. I got one too a while ago. I don't know - maybe self-publishing is the way to go for me.

I hope you're doing okay.

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs* Some days the rejections are tougher than others. The trick is to just keep sending things out. I get a lot of good feedback - almost all my rejections are personal, and so it helps me figure out a) what they're looking for and b) how I can edit a particular piece to be stronger. It's just a little tiring some days.

I'm doing ok... just super busy lately. I'm kind of doing ALL THE THINGS right now. Today is the first day with no going-out-doing-stuff social obligations I've had in... um... a while. Introvert fail. Heh. I'm still getting caught up on all the reading of stuff I need to do. It's so easy to fall behind!

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the "what they're looking for" part that makes me think that maybe self-publishing is the way to go for me. I've never been very good at subsuming my own desires to fit more into what other people want.

I have a pretty bad cold that's prevented me from getting to work on the next Moonfall update quite yet, but I'm on vacation and I feel better today than I have since Friday, so maybe I can get at least some shots taken today in the game. The perks of being married to a dude who's even more introverted than I am and thus having nothing to do. ;)

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! I hope your cold passes quickly. Out, damn germs, out! Being sick is kind of a bummer at any time, but especially on vacation.

The "what they're looking for" part is more for picking stories that will fit well than changing the stories I'm sending to fit what other people want. Not that I don't edit based on feedback from editors, but I try to do it holistically. I'll consider the feedback I get from everyone rather than just from one venue, and then think about how much I feel it's relevant, should be implemented, and can be implemented without tearing the guts out of a story and starting all over entirely (which I generally am not too keen on doing). I'm kind of painfully slow at it all. I have friends with dozens of pieces out in circulation at a time, and that kind of boggles my mind. Maybe I'll get there eventually, but it's hard for me to be that fast with things.

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs*

I don't think my stories would fit well anywhere with anyone.

You keep doing what you do. Your stories fit well with me. :)

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I read a LOT of short stories - like, a whole lot. I have subscriptions to seven different magazines (I think... yes, seven. That seems right) and I read short story collections and stuff online and and and... and I think there are a lot of places your stories would be at home. But you know, it's an emotionally draining experience getting them to those spots, and if it's not something you feel like doing, it's not something you need to do. Just keep sharing 'em with me, ok? ;)

And thank you! I'm going to keep trying to keep doing what I do, maybe with slight variations as I do new stuff. We'll see.

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you would tell me what these places are, I could try.

And new stuff and learning and trying new things is good!

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Apex (http://www.apex-magazine.com/), Shimmer (http://www.shimmerzine.com/), and Electric Velocipede (http://www.electricvelocipede.com/) spring to mind immediately - I'll give it some more thought and get back to you.

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I was thinking specifically about Seth stories. Because yeah, I could try submitting some of my non-Seth Idol stuff to those places. I'd get rejected, but I could try.

But Seth....Eggshells doesn't have any fantasy elements. It doesn't have anything weird. It's not speculative.

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much all the places I submit to are looking for speculative work, so that's basically all I know about - I don't really do the literary stuff, you know?

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs* I'm sorry.

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooo yeah, Thai fried chicken (no Hitler included) sounds delicious. I think the only time I had Thai chicken wings was at the Thai temple Sunday feast in Tampa, actually, last time I was down in your neck of the woods. Mmmm tasty. And now I'm craving those weird little coconut/green onion custard kind of things... I haven't found a place up here that serves those and they are SO good. Siiiiiigh...

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
PTW is still an unattested form of life - we don't meet up until the end of the month, at which time she will become real people. ;)

I'm thinking of coming down to Florida in October - my best friend's birthday is at the end of the month, and it should be less awful in general (I am so glad to not be dealing with Florida weather anymore). Once I have plans, I'll let you know because HELL YEAH I'm gonna have some tasty Thai custard things, and also see you and get kicked in person, hopefully (I clearly like the abuse. I sign up for this stuff on purpose).

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Yessss, I am a glitch in the Matrix, not really a life form at all, and I was programmed to distract people when they're trying to write!

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew it all along, and here's an admission! Of course, this means I'm going to be hanging out by myself in Chicago in a couple of weeks, since glitches in the matrix can't enjoy geeky science museums. Or CAN they? Dum dum DUM!

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You need to stop hanging out with PTW and get back here so you can get some!

DAMN comment sounds incredibly scandalous!

(Edit: my shitty typing is scandalous as well)

Your tastes don't sound predictable, unless by "predictable" you mean "loving all the odd stuff," LOL.

Mmm, fried chicken...

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a LOT of odd stuff, but my taste are kind of specifically towards fantasy-ish stuff (rather than weird pictures of classic art with cat heads photoshopped on - actually a thing, and being sold for crazy amounts of money), usually with bright and vibrant colors. My friends know me well enough that buying art for me is easy. Finding a place to hang it all is trickier, heh!

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Booooo rejection letters. I'm sorry!! ;_;

However, I must applaud you on the tentacle monster and the troll. This sounds like a metaphorical representation of various fandoms I've been in.

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, rejection letters happen. I shall cackle madly when I get another acceptance letter. It'll happen eventually, dammit. :)

Heh... the tentacle monster and the troll are pretty shiny. And you're right, it does rather sound like a metaphor for the deep dark dungeons of the internet.

[identity profile] anyonesghost.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just amazed that the level of Godwin's Law that the article invokes didn't end the internet entirely.

[identity profile] halfshellvenus.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm reading when I can, since I'm in training through Friday and it takes all day. AND it's programming, so all my attention is focused on my flaky borrowed PC and working code. Not only can't get a thing done, I fall behind just rebooting the thing when it decides to go belly-up. Boo.

Is anyone but me not getting comment notifications? I'm getting nothing, not even, "Hi, there's another Green Room post!"

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get the notification for the reply to my comment until hours after the actual reply.

[identity profile] halfshellvenus.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I still don't have anything from even yesterday! It has all fallen into the Vortex. :O

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
My notifications are very spotty. I've gotten a few from today, none from yesterday. LJ is frustrating sometimes. Frank must be chewing on the wires again.

[identity profile] kathrynrose.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you know they "fixed" something yesterday. That's never good.

[identity profile] lrig-rorrim.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha. Well, that just figures.

[identity profile] kathrynrose.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The troll in me wants to say, "Gee, I hope they weren't planning to pitch a show to the Food Network."

Also, am I the only one who thinks it's funny that KFC picked the word "distasteful" to describe it? :P

Did anyone click through to the JCP teapot? I think some people are over using their imaginations on that one.

I I have voted in one poll. Have been offline all morning and am really freaking wiped. will recommence reading and voting in a few hours.

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
The troll in me wants to say, "Gee, I hope they weren't planning to pitch a show to the Food Network."

Oh yeah, I can see that now. Instead of Hell's Kitchen, it's Der Führer's Fryer. The chicken's always really dry though, because there's NO JUICE ALLOWED.

[identity profile] theun4givables.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm dying. I shouldn't have laughed so hard at this comment as I did. I really shouldn't have.

*giggling*

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahaha, my work here is done. ♥

[identity profile] favoritebean.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I learned something new today. According to that article you linked, Thailand has an obsession with Hitler. My Thai friends have never mentioned this though, so maybe the article exaggerates?

This also reminds me of Hitler's Deli that opened in Mumbai a few years back. People protested that though, so they apparently changed their name.

I swear, people!

I did laugh at your choice of brunch places.

Wish me luck, GR. I head to the doctor's office today. Not sure what I'll expect, to be honest.

[identity profile] medleymisty.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*wishes you luck*

Also, nice icon. :)

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose we should just be grateful that they don’t advertise how they only use gas ovens… *sigh*

On a scale of 1 to 10, how surely am I going to hell if I admit to audibly laughing at that? >_> (ETA: It was a cringe sort of laugh, but still.)

And I gotta admit, I'm a bit curious about this place. As has been mentioned upthread, I've had Thai chicken wings before, and they were amazing and delicious and everything else, though genocidal dictators hellbent on world domination are just a BIT unappetizing! And I'm not even sure what to make of the "Nazi Chic" thing mentioned in the article. It sounds like something that belongs on either 1) The Onion, or 2) a fairly peculiar fetish website. I....yeah. I'm just gonna back away slowly from the internet now >_>

The occasional laugh at gallows humor shouldn't rate any guilt at all.

That said, I'm wondering whether this is the same class of pun as the one about the legal fetishist who got off on a technicality?

[identity profile] porn-this-way.livejournal.com 2013-07-17 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
OMG. I had to read that twice, then friggen lost it. I wonder if he was represented by the impotent lawyer, because it didn't stand up in court.

I wish I could say I only occasionally laughed at gallows humor or just general twisted shit in general, but nope! Half the time I'm sort of wincing and laughing at the same time, but the wincing definitely takes a back seat to the laughing. Okay, I lied, I don't wish I only occasionally laughed at this sort of thing at all. Laughter is the music of the soul, and we all know mine is tainted, moldy, and burned to a crisp. :P

Here's big news.

JK Rowling has written a detective novel under a pseudonym. Cuckoo Calling by Robert Galbraith.

She wanted to try a new genre without the hype and pressure from her Harry Potter success. That secret didn't last long.
