Green Room - Week 7 - Day 3

There is a lot of spirited and quite frankly fascinating conversation going on in the Work Room http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/504864.html and yesterday's Green Room http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/505504.html

I love seeing people working things out and exposing their general philosophies and thought processes, when discussing something that seems fairly basic, but has layers to it.

That said, there seemed to be some confusion about what Idol does and doesn't support. I need to remind people that opinions and observations about "this is my experience" are fine. But when it comes to speaking for Idol there's only one person who can do that. He's the one posting this. As long as people remember that, it's all good.

I know that some people just want to concentrate on writing the entry before the deadline. Which is today (Thursday the 8th!!) http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/504693.html So, if you don't have anything done yet, you best be getting a move on! ;)

I know others enjoy the conversations about "the craft" in the Work Room and the fun in the Green Room. When it comes to talking about writing though, I think it's entirely appropriate that it spill over. I hope it continues to do that.

But I want to make sure that the people who come in to just unwind and chat with people are also engaged.

*takes a look around at the general Idol audience*

So - what do you think of the current monetary policy of. . . *looks again* Yeah, that's not going to fly.

Uh... I think Tutuola said it best when. . . yeah. . . hmmm. . . . *takes one more look around* hmmm. . . *reads Idol's friends list for inspiration*

How about that Christmas shopping???

Did you see that meme? Isn't it SO funny?

Boobies!?!?

How about that weather we've been having. That's wild wacky stuff!

There you go? Better? ;)

I'm in.

Yep :nodding:

We have a $50 limit for my family's Secret Santa plus $20 for the Yankee Swap. $20 for my husband's family's Yankee Swap. I'm looking at all my medical bills and I'm just ready to throw in the towel :p

Somehow, every time I'm scheduled to start work on the quarter hour (the scheduling at this place is nuts), I can't see to get it together, and I'm racing to get out the door on time. I gotta leave in less than ten minutes, and here I am in the GR instead of getting my lunch.

It's totally self-serving, though, as I've posted a link in the Work Room, hoping for a last-minute beta.

Perhaps tomorrow I'll have time for actual socializing!

Yay for first! :D

Considering this is my third year, I find it interesting to see what the newbies think about everything. There are certain personalities in every group and it is interesting to observe. I know most of the vets and know their personalities... But for new people just encountering them for the first time? It's interesting to watch. I don't mean this in a bad way. Not at all. I have mostly good feelings toward everyone. It's just fun seeing the interaction and seeing new personalities mixed in.

The part about which people emerge as powerhouses is interesting too. I've always found that changes throughout the course of the season, especially with newbies. I love watching the newbies start to find their own here and to grow. I remember my first season and how I fought to gain attention, about how much I grew in that season and since then. I'm excited to watch that play out in others. I'm a player, but I think more than that this season, I'm being an observer too :)

Hope that makes sense. I'm rambling as I often do.

Oh honey :(

I'm sorry you're in a foul mood today. I'm actually feeling better after a good nights sleep. I'll talk to you in a bit, but for now... *hugs*

So far I've got something that I fear makes no narrative sense whatsoever.

I'll toast to bupkis, maybe then it'll be more kind to us.

That is totally a cat licking its lips in anticipation of how tasty The Givers of Baths' flesh will taste once the cat is dried off and back to normal stalking status, lol.

Yay for feeling good about your entry! Always a great feeling. :)

[identity profile] cemetaria.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd really appreciate that! I'm really, really struggling this week because of it being serialised fiction and I'm really not sure it's making sense out of the context of the other pieces. I'm only slightly sure that it's making sense in context :/
I'll work in it for another half hour or so and then send it off to you to see if you can give me a sensible and helpful opinion :)

It's an interesting idea...

but it seems that the appropriate place would be a post in the workroom - that way, everyone could see it and choose to participate or not, rather than needing to visit one writer's journal for it.

Come with me to MO one year ;)

I've yet to come across someone in here that I truly truly haven't liked. Sometimes things are said that I side-eye, but if you look long enough, you see that everyone has different approaches to things and different ways of stating those approaches.

I'm wary of the work room because I don't feel like I have the right to tell anyone how to write. I figure, they know what they're doing...

Another component that makes this community different from others is the voting.

I had a joke I was going to make to a friend in the work room this week. I deleted it and sent it to her privately because while I knew she'd laugh and eat it up, the people in here that didn't know me, or didn't know we were friends would think I was being a major jerk. And that would cost me votes. =)

Hey, maybe this'll cheer you up: I typed your name in my entry this week. Well yeah, I did mention how your user pic practically scares the living daylights outta me, but still...somebody mentioned you in an entry! that's worth a "yahooty," right?

[identity profile] pixiebelle.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There are people I like more and there are people I like less. I can say that even those I really don't like a whole lot sometimes surprise me, so I try not to hold grudges. I know one person in particular that I didn't think I could ever be friends with surprised me... And we are friends now. So I try to keep an open mind about most everyone.

I used to be wary of things like the work room, but I've figured out that it's more me talking about and discussing what I do like to see. I'm not saying it's the only way to be. Idol is something different for everyone. I respect that. I also have no background in writing, so who I am to say my way is the only way?

Yeah, with such a large online group... Humor can be lost on some people and start drama. There are people who get offended easily in any group. It's always good to think before posting. I've learned that myself through the years in other forums.

You're the main one I was thinking of! How many seasons have [livejournal.com profile] imafarmgirl and [livejournal.com profile] agirlnamedluna played in? They must be up there since don't they both have the highest number of entries ever played, with over 100 each?

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Or both! A completely different and special train wreck! ;)

[identity profile] notodette.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, see, that's just how I personally feel about the work room. Being so new, I would think my relationship with it should be different from yours. Writing background or not, you know the trends of the competition and what works and what doesn't. What if I said something that didn't work for anyone and someone followed my advice and got voted out. That would be awful (not that anyone would take my advice, but on the off-chance!)

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll do what I can!

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
As usual, the trick here is to create something out of nothing (bupkis)!

[identity profile] n3m3sis42.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll toast to it too... being a little tipsy might make my day go better anyway. ;-)

[identity profile] n3m3sis42.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true!

[identity profile] pixiebelle.livejournal.com 2011-12-08 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still up to the writer what they write. If they take advice and can't make it work for them? That's still their decision. I just state generalities. What I like or don't like. With a combined voice of opinions, people can see what everyone likes or doesn't like and perhaps can improve. I'd never say "write a funny entry about a banana and you'll do well!"

I'd write "my ideas for this topic include a banana story and that could be funny!" One person might take that and run with it and do it well. Someone else might not. What they do with am idea they get is still on them.

Though typically I won't write ideas out there. I mean, if everyone saw that and wrote an entry on bananas, that would suck. Usually I'm vague and state it as an opinion like how I prefer strong story based entries with unique stories. I think that's pretty basic and leaves the writer to use that advice knowing it's just my likes/dislikes and not a guaranteed consensus. It's just to spur ideas and to discuss writing. I like talking.

Awesome! Yeah, he's great. I've been earwormed with "Confessions" all week.

"Fuck! I love boobs though..."

*is sad*

You can always do homemade things - knitting, baking, painting, or even something like a coupo. Good for some needed service, like two hours of babysitting or an hour of housework or something like that?
