Thank you to kithan for stumbling in here over the weekend half out of her mind rambling about something or another!! I figured people would appreciate knowing that she was still alive and not locked in a dungeon somewhere that she couldn't see the sun for months at a time. *shakes head* Nope. That's not that case AT ALL. She's doing perfectly fine. Perfectly. fine.
No need to continue to search and rescue operations. :)

So. Lost.
Some people loved it. Some hated it.
Some liked some parts but didn't like other parts. Some liked it emotionally but not intellectually.
And some people haven't seen it yet so they haven't made up their mind yet.
(and some won't be watching it at all)

The one thing I *can* say though is that something that *everyone* loves and appreciates are the topic threads!! 9 out of 10 dentists agree that an Idol topic thread is good for your teeth and gums!!

It's something that everyone can enjoy, and each piece end however it is that the writer wants them to end!!! :D

I stayed up until 11:30 watching the finale, and then woke up at 5:30 this morning for work. As I turned out the light last night, I thought "let's see how I feel about this finale tomorrow morning when I'm reaping the rewards of having stayed up to watch it." :)

Eh. It was all right. I didn't really need the main story resolved... I was just glad to see the characters happy.

My friend Derek was declaring, right up to the last half hour, that he was going to buy the boxed set and make me watch the whole show. Then when the last ten minutes rolled around, he let fly some extremely colorful expletives and declared that Lost was now dead to him.

And he didn't even have to stay up past his bedtime to see it...

Haha... yeah, it was a polarizing thing, for sure.

The producers/writers have been hinting for months that they weren't going to neatly tie up the whole plot. I thought it was lovely. :)

Since I've never seen it, I obviously can't speak to the details. Derek's main complaint that it was classic deus ex machina. If the writers and producers planned from the very beginning that they would make the plot so twisted and confusing, and then refuse to resolve it JUST TO MESS WITH PEOPLE, okay. But I can't stand sloppy writers who paint themselves into the corner of a maze, realize they don't know how to get out, and throw out a cliched ending and call it good.

Eh. I think there was more to it than that. I'm probably way more forgiving than someone who wanted a story wrap-up, though.

I actually would have preferred less of a story wrap-up than diluting a rich and varied show that originally was about humanist philosophies down to a formulaic deist and super-heteronormative morality play.

Ya gotta wonder if the network suits got involved at some point. It's had a vague whiff of that for at least the last couple of seasons.

Luckily, I just wasn't wrapped up heart and soul like I was with M*A*S*H. :)

I thought fifth season was pretty good. I honestly think it's got more to do with the writing staff. That show has had a revolving door from the beginning with very few people who stayed on start to finish. So I think you get the personal philosophies of the writers taking precedent because they're not necessarily looking at the same aspects of the show as previous writers.

Probably so. I really found myself up and down with it, in part due to how we watched it. We downloaded it over the course of a month or so and just saturated ourselves. Once we had to start watching weekly it was not as much fun!

It's definitely an up and down show. The show went through whole seasons of being godawful and whole seasons of being incredibly well-crafted television. I sometimes wonder what it must have been like for the actors to have to reconcile their character motivations in one season with their character motivations in the next, especially with characters like Kate who wasn't consistent at all. And I'm not even talking about the characters who had major character changes that made sense, like Claire or Locke or Charlie.

KATE. Yeah, we talked about that. We really noticed that women started out strong in that show, but if you look at the last couple of seasons they're not much more than arm candy. That's a pretty stupid thing to do to such good characters. The women who were side characters were treated even worse.

Yeah, I had this conversation a little while ago with a friend who just started watching LOST this year. When she was halfway through the first season, she asked me why I disliked Kate so much, and I explained that first season, I really liked her, too!

I agree. I think by last season, the only female characters who really had any personal agency left were Juliet and Sun, and I was not at all happy with how they were treated this season. I get that Elizabeth Mitchell got another job, but still! And yeah, one of the things Destiny and I were talking about that bugged us both was how...Sayid ends up with SHANNON at the end? And not Nadia, the woman he's been in love with his whole life? Shannon is more important to him? The only explanation I have for that is that they were not even thinking about the female characters. I was a bit happier with the Kate/Claire storyline this season, though. I liked how they built that.

The thing is, I really liked Shannon as a character because she was such a horrid person at first and you did actually get to see her grow. But she left the show so early that it was hard to have an emotional attachment to her and I can't be convinced that she would be more important to Sayid than Nadia is.

I think that's part of why Ben didn't go, because Alex wasn't there.
