Green Room - Week 26 - Day 5

In case you missed the announcement at the end of last night's Green Room - there is now a facebook group for anyone interested in having something else to click "like" on.

The question was asked about if there was a way to set your fb privacy settings so that it didn't show up on your profile. I'll be honest, I have no idea - so I'm going to ASK DR LJ. Or I guess in this case "Ask Programmer LJ".

I'm not planning on really doing much with that group right now. It's mostly a placeholder to have a presence over there, hopefully to help direct people back here. :)

***

In case you missed it (and you better not have)there are new topic entries being posted: http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/338480.html

Be the first one on your Friends List to read and comment to/about them!!

***

What's going on with you today?

I am trying very, very hard not to eat any of these each time I pass through the kitchen.

The giant Super Biscuit in the bottom right hand corner sadly exists no longer, and the other 16 are to be saved for tonight.

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Are those ANZAC bikkies?

[identity profile] mstrobel.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed they are! And posting that picture here was the stupidest thing ever, because now I am staring longingly at the screen as well as the kitchen bench!

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha.

I feel so Australian right now ;)

Um, you need a distraction. What can I do to distract you?

[identity profile] mstrobel.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Type up my entries for me? XD Okay, not that that would distract me ... more like give me more time to stare at the biscuits!

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, no, that definitely would not distract you. You could read my home game entries though! :D

[identity profile] mstrobel.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly that would break my rule #1: not to start reading until I have posted ;-) So I'd better hurry up typing!!

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured as much. :P Type, type, type! The contestant thread is looking lonely right now.

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What sort of biscuits (cookies?) are those? They look yummy!

[identity profile] mstrobel.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They're called Anzac biscuits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_biscuit) :D I kind of overdid the golden syrup but they tasted amazing!

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So...... those are for me, right??? :-)

[identity profile] mstrobel.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
In exchange for votes, sure ;-)

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
My boyish charm ain't going to cut it? Damn. :-p

[identity profile] mstrobel.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, sonny. I'm afraid your boyish charm is barking up the wrong tree there! XD

[identity profile] kittenboo.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fairly certain that anything you choose to "like" and anything you put on your interests page is public no matter what. That was part of the new changes they made.

Everyone should go through their privacy settings since the changes, a lot has changed, including that they automatically set you as wanting to share information with third parties.

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I checked those third party settings last week when someone mentioned it in their status update and mine was automatically opted out so I didn't have to change anything.

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I don't think there is a way to tinker privacy settings for individual liked pages. I tend to use as much of Facebook's privacy settings as I can, down to customising privacy on individual status updates. But if anyone knows otherwise, I'd be thrilled. Then maybe I'd join a few more groups and things that I don't really want to out myself in public about.

Today has been pretty quiet for me. My flist felt dead, but hey, at least I have two Home Game entries up. They're on my first page of posts if you don't want to wait and see if there'll be a home game thread ;) I posted about my trip to Brunei and what it takes to be a geek.

I also managed to import some video footage from last week's comedy show. Now I just have to edit the promo video and upload it to YouTube. It's about the only productive thing I have going for me right now.

Tomorrow night I have a date night planned with my husband. I am looking forward to this seeing as I think the last time we went out just the two of us was more than a month ago, when we were in Melbourne. We are going to go see Iron Man 2!

[identity profile] similiesslip.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
My husband and son saw IM2 and said it was good. I hope you enjoy it!:)

I am still waiting for the home game thread too...

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope I do too. I've seen mixed feelings from various people.

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If you enjoyed the original Iron Man, you'll like IM2! (And there is a short scene after the credits, so stay in your seats!)

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the heads up! I like seeing things after the credits but it's so hard to know when to expect them.

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a fun movie! Hope you and the hubs have a great time! Enjoy your date night!

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

[identity profile] cacophonesque.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty sure there's not a way to like something without it being in your profile. I actually recently deleted a lot of my interests when they started cross-linking them to pages and stuffs. But, I still find Facebook to be the most convenient way to keep up with a broad range of people from my present and past.

Today is kind of rainy and dark. I have to work today. Maybe I will work on my entries at some point in the day/evening. I also want to do more packing/purging. I started digging around on craigslist roommate wanted postings last night. I have a delicious muffin on my desk.

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmmmmmmmmmm... what kinda muffin? :-)

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hell yes! I tuned in to Glee to watch an episode I thought I missed and it turns out they're airing season 2 in Malaysia now :D

[identity profile] kenakeri.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...Facebook?

So if I'm understanding how that would work, the FB people will follow any links there back here to LJ?

[identity profile] adoptedwriter.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This rain on the plain is a pain and drives me insane! AW

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
How inane! ;)

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You realize, Gary, that because of FB linkages that Season 7 of LJI will probably start out with about 500 people?? =)

I'm at work, still doing that thing I do. About to head up to the front desk for an hour, back in a while.

[identity profile] gratefuladdict.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
We're just at that point in the season where there aren't a lot of people still in it, and the people still in are getting tired, and there's no drama to whip the masses into a frenzy. It's not a bad thing!

Just throw out some bigger twists next week, and you'll have all the GR traffic you can take!

[identity profile] gratefuladdict.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Assess usage of the Green Room? Or are you using that as an indicator of interest in the game overall?

I'm completely unaware of anything happening behind the scenes, and I kind of like it that way! :)

[identity profile] gratefuladdict.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fair.

I have to admit, though, that I'm always a bit put off when you talk about Idol like a brand. I understand that it *does* have equity, and that it needs to *keep* and *build* equity to keep the community and the game going. But at the same time, I sometimes feel like we're ants in your ant farm, and you just want to maintain the conditions necessary for us to keep producing and recruiting new ants.

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmmmmm... well we can probably manufacture some drama to bring the masses back in a foaming-at-the-mouth frenzy, I'm sure. Whaddya think? :-)

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
lol... Hey, I do it all for Gary.

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though my track record betting against you is... ahem... spotty... I bet that there will be a *ton* of people signing up for a Season 7. There were what, 241 this season? With the added exposure over at FB and the convention and all... there could be a pretty big turnout. Want to wager? :-p

[identity profile] spydielives.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I expect there will be more people than this season too, but I have been wrong about other things too.

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've been wrong about plenty... like backing dear Amanda... *sigh* But I don't think we're wrong about this. :-)

[identity profile] roina-arwen.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure we're right about season 7. It'll start around 400-500 people, maybe eliminate 10 or so each week for the first few weeks, plus the inevitable drop-outs as they go "Are these people INSANE??" ... ;)

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
lol... it would be seriously insane with that many people. But fun!

[identity profile] joeymichaels.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This is at least in part because of all of us academics. This is a nasty, nasty time of year for us. I'd be participating a lot more if I didn't have finals and senior events and performances and sporting events and graduation to plan and and and.

Then, of course, we're knocked out of the habit of checking LJI every day, so you lose a few people here and there.

I've noticed all season that a certain percentage of participants vanish once they're voted off (or, rather, not voted in). I'm not all that surprised to see the numbers dropping.

I wonder if starting "the jury" earlier and including more people might not encourage more of the folks to stick around and stay active?

[identity profile] joeymichaels.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe start LJI with the start of the TV Season? :P

Especially if you have uku thousand applicants next year. If you really have twice what you had this year, you're going to have to eliminate like ten people a week or you'll end up with a two year contest on your hands. :D

[identity profile] joeymichaels.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I already like it!

[identity profile] rattsu.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Making a comic for my second entry, and my hat is off to anybody that actually does that on a regular basis.

Damnit Tea, how do you do it? *bashes speech bubbles until they fit*

Have no facebook, but just got a deviantart account:

There is a way to control who sees it, but you can only customize the setting for your entire "Likes and Interests" section, rather than individual pages that you become a fan of.

If you go to Account > Privacy Settings > Profile Information, the second setting is Likes and Interests. In the drop down menu, there is an option to customize. You can then authorize only custom friends groups to see this section.

Basically, the FB friend groups system works like LJ filters; you can use them for privacy, customizing what parts of your profile or activity show up (and even which groups you appear online to in the chat program), and you can use them for your own following interest (like when you use your filters to view your friends page).

So, you can create a custom group that's allowed to see that section, and then customize your privacy preferences to reflect that.

I, on the other hand, display LJ Idol pride on my Facebook without shame. :D

[personal profile] finding_helena 2010-05-12 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not seeing that option. Have you done this recently? I think they might have gotten rid of it.

[identity profile] gratefuladdict.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm looking at it right now. Are you having trouble finding the privacy setting, or creating the custom group?

[identity profile] spydielives.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
A few years ago I outed my "Spydielives" id with my real name, deliberately.

It was rather freeing.

Now I can cross-link all sorts of things and not worry whether I am doing it as Spydie or as Amy, so long as I think about the other contexts of "small business owner" and "corporate attorney's wife."

[identity profile] gratefuladdict.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I'm pretty open with my FB and my LJ. I have family and coworkers who read both. I just keep that public persona appropriate for those audiences, and lock LJ entries that *are* private. Makes it much easier for me.

[identity profile] cacophonesque.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the problem now though is that because all likes are now attached to pages, even if you have your interests blocked on your own page--anyone who clicks on the page for "making out with hotdogs" will now see your icon listed among the fans or whatever.

Although that was always the case with groups and fanpages.

The real difference is that in the past I could list "LOST" as a favorite TV show without actually adding their fanpage.

[identity profile] gratefuladdict.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point! I checked with my friend who is an engineer at FB. He said since they have made it possible to have your friends list private, they may be planning to do the same with your "liked" pages as well. He's going to look into it and get back to me. Fingers crossed!

[identity profile] spydielives.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The fine print:

Privacy Settings Friends, Tags and Connections

These settings only control the information people can see on your profile. This information, such as your Pages and list of friends, is still public, so it could appear elsewhere on the site and be accessed by applications you and your friends use.

- - -

FB's new internal applications automatically link things, even if (on your profile) something is not displayed. So you might not display LJI on your profile. But someone looking at LJI will see a link back to you automatically. That is what people are worried about.

[identity profile] gratefuladdict.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point! I didn't think of that.

Everyone has been talking about the linked interests issue on their profiles. It hasn't happened to my page at all, so I don't even know what it looks like - but it sounds like a pain.

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not so worried about people finding me from the LJ Idol FB page. I'm more concerned about people finding the LJ Idol FB page from my profile. And I'm not willing to adjust all my "liked" pages' security just so I can "like" the LJ Idol one. I don't have a problem with people knowing I like the other things because they can't trace me back to my LJ.

[identity profile] comedychick.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I checked out that part and knew about that.

For me it's not LJ Idol shame. It's my general being more open on LJ than I am with people I have friended on Facebook. Like family and high school folks. I don't want them knowing I'm in an open marriage, just for starters.

Seconded those who say -- anything you "like" on FB is public. Including, if you link your interests to pages, all of your interests.

Hence I deleted all mine.

It's annoying.

[identity profile] spydielives.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I deleted all the ones that were stupid, or not controlled by someone I knew personally.

This is the important bit that people might not be noticing:

Privacy Settings Friends, Tags and Connections:

Howdy Howdy Howdy all... Hope everybody is having a fine day.

I use FB a lot actually... I've been able to reconnect with a lot of people from my past and it's mostly been a good thing. Though it can be a total time suck. But there are definitely some things that drive me crazy about it. But hey, you have to take the good with the bad.

Today seems to be much less of a Smurf-punting day than it has been recently. So I take that as a good thing. I'm actually feeling pretty chipper... strangely enough.

Still puzzling over my entries. I fear the twists in the voting this week... somebody suggested another combined vote/Gatekeeper round... yikes! I suppose we shall see!

Happy Hump Day Folks!!!

[identity profile] notbatman.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"I fear the twists in the voting this week... somebody suggested another combined vote/Gatekeeper round... yikes!"

This. The Potential Voting Gimmicks/Shenanigans for a Double-Topic with an Open Topic are bordering on epic.

I'm just trying not to fret about it too much as there's not much I can do about it one way or the other... Because maybe he'll surprise us with a regular vote.

Wheeee!

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Epic indeed. lol...

Yeah, I'm working on not stressing about it. But surprise us with a regular vote? Oh, I don't think he'd be that kind to us. :-)

Buckle your seat belts!

[identity profile] callistahogan.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey everyone.

These past few days have been really hectic. I recently just moved in with my sister, due to some problems in the home, so I have no idea when I'll be able to write my Idol entries. I'll have to write them both today, tomorrow, and Friday morning, because I won't have time Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. I do have ideas, so those go for SOMETHING, right? :D

Also, speaking about problems in the home: If anyone can spare a few thoughts and/or prayers my way, I'd appreciate it. I'm just feeling a tad bit overwhelmed. Just knowing someone's thinking about me would help so much.

[identity profile] cacophonesque.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh--I actually had to move out of my house temporarily as a teenager and it was definitely overwhelming. I've had other friends who had to do it on a permanent basis, too. But, sometimes we have to do what we have to do in order to survive. I hope that you are safe and well!

[identity profile] fourzoas.livejournal.com 2010-05-12 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sending you and yours good vibes for healing whatever is not well.

[identity profile] kenakeri.livejournal.com 2010-05-13 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sending prayers your way. Hope things work out for you.

[identity profile] java-fiend.livejournal.com 2010-05-15 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I missed this when you first posted it... I'm so sorry that you're going through a rough time right now. Just know that I too am keeping you in my thoughts. I hope that whatever it is, it passes soon.

[identity profile] pixiebelle.livejournal.com 2010-05-15 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I missed this the first time, but I am certainly sending positive thoughts your direction *hugs*
