To tell the truth, I kind of wanted to be him.

I don't know if I would have said that at the time, but looking back, I think there is some truth to it.

We were in high school and he was deep, brooding and popular with the girls. He wrote about things that I literally had no experience with, as in "being deep, brooding and what happens when you are popular with the girls".

He introduced me to a lot of bands, and authors, that I still love to this day.

I introduced him to other stuff.

I have no idea why we started talking, other than being in class together, but we did and found shared interests in a sea of people we didn't *want* to share interests with.

The friendship kept up over the years. This was before either of us were on the internet, but we talked a couple times a week on the phone. As isolated as I was after school, that was a big deal.

He was one of those guys that you warned your female friends to *never* date, and most of them never listened to you, and told you through their tears afterward, that you had been right.

So I guess I knew that I shouldn't trust him. Call be being naive, or male privilege, or just being a dumb kid, I didn't really think that it would ever be applied to me.

Until I got married. He was my first choice for best man. I told him before I told anyone else, and asked him, almost two years before the actual wedding. He knew the date before anyone else as well, to make sure everything was OK.

A couple weeks before the wedding, he lets me know that he hasn't been fitted for his suit yet, he isn't going to be able to make the rehearsal dinner, and oh yeah, when is the wedding again, because he still needs to see if he can get off for it. Needless to say, I replaced him as best man - he didn't even end up coming to the wedding... and the friendship dried up soon after that.

I didn't see him in person until years later. He was at a show. We ran into each other, and exchanged a few words. His first words to me, "Man, you've gotten fat!"

We didn't talk much at the show.

A few years after *that*, he was working the door at another show. We talked for a few minutes and he indicated that we should hang out afterward. I said "sure" and then ignored him the rest of the night.

That was the last I saw of him... until I was dropped off for a show last night, and there he was, working the door again. It was slow, so he immediately engaged me in conversation. He has a wife and a new baby girl, but hasn't wrote a single thing since just after we lost touch. He didn't address any of the above, but he did mention what an idiot he had been over the years, to a lot of people. The cockiness that used to draw people to him, there was still a bit of it, but it was tempered by age and actual experience.

He seemed calmer, better, as if being a Dad had helped finally give him some direction. He also seemed sad to have lost his writing, the one thing he had always prized, and had been sure was going to be his mark on the world.

He asked for my number, and I gave it to him. Will we actually end up talking? I don't know.

But it got me thinking about Idol, and how many people have passed through here - the relationships that have been formed. Some people have made positive impressions, some negative, and some have started out one way and ended up another. Because these are people living their lives. It's not like cardboard cutouts just standing in one place. The person you meet one season isn't going to be exactly the same one you encounter the next. Or, if they are, they are doing something wrong with this "Life" thing. ;)

Maybe it doesn't alter the core of "who they are". But maybe the progress of time can impact how they process things, and how they choose to relate to others. Maybe that's something to keep in mind as you meet and interact with new people. Or maybe not. Maybe people are who they are, and all that's different is your perceptions of them. I guess we'll have to see.

It's so nice to see so many old friends back in the fold, and especially to see a lot of them eager to play one more time!

Seeing people mentioned, and the appearing, summoned by the power of the Internet, got me thinking. If YOU had the power to "cast" this season, bringing back some of your favorites (especially if they are folks who might not get the attention they deserve. Oh, like bettybaker or alexpgp for example. They really should be an Idol-household names) who would they be, and why?

In this scenario, they are completely flattered by your words and unable to resist the compulsion to play Idol.

For that matter, who (to the best your knowledge) HASN'T played, but needs to join in on the fun?

Survivor was awesome last night. And a certain 10 year old told me that she loved me last night! (not just a response, completely on her own!)

Life is pretty damn good.

There's something wrong with Arizona.

Must be something in the water.

They embrace discrimination every chance they get, when they aren't embracing "Sheriff Joe" and whatever whacked-out idea he's coming out with this week.

Arizona is a cesspool of hatred and bigotry and no one should ever go there...

Except of course that I know some people in Arizona, and they are good and kind-hearted people who tend to oppose all of that stuff. But they do get a little touchy when it comes to people slamming their state.

Which is OK, because Kansas, Georgia and Missouri have all introduced similar bills discriminating against homosexuals, and we all know how awful people are there!! These are scumbags and their states are the worst that the humanity has to offer....

Except of course that I know people there, and they too oppose what is going on, and speak out against it. They also have a thing about outsiders who read an article on Huffington Post and decide that they have all the facts about what is local news to them.

Which is OK, because at least we still have Florida to hate. With a gun crazy population bend on killing minorities...

Except that's where I am. Granted, I can't claim to be one of the good people. I'm clearly a madman out to destroy everyone that I come across. But I still have some state pride and I wish that people who actually do a little research instead of going off every time they see some messed up case happening in my state.

Because there is f-ed up things happening everywhere. In every state, province, country, city, neighborhood... there is plenty of hatred to go around, and plenty of people who don't realize just how f-ed up they are being, because they are coming from a completely different angle on the issue.

There are certainly things that need to be opposed and stood up to, as a society, as a culture and as beings occupying this shared space we like to call "Earth".

Understanding goes a long way, and being able to not have a knee-jerk reaction, but rather taking a good hard look at a situation. Not everyone has the time for that, and going off on things is easier. (and when it comes to people on the internet, often more profitable)

But doing the work to oppose something is more than signing an internet petition or commenting on a newsthread, and it starts on the ground in those places that are so easy to demonize. It starts with good people, making smart decisions and actually giving a damn about the people who share this space with each other.

If yesterday is an indication, people are going to ask "what is the connection to Idol"? I would say "Not everything needs to have a direct connection", but of course there is one. You're not going to like everyone you encounter here. That's the truth. Some people are going to become dear friends, others you would go out your way to avoid. But it's their space too, and we need to figure out a way to get along without stepping on too many toes, a way where you're right to be who you are doesn't interfere with someone else's right to be who they are as well.

It's part of being human, and it's a constant struggle to figure out where those lines are, and keep any one group from tipping the boat over in the process.

But it's worth it.

I hope that you will join in that microcosm of human condition that we like to call LJ IDOL when we open our doors on Monday, March 3rd!

I've been thinking about Michael Sam.

Because football is one of the internet's favorite things (being the extension of 80's teen movies), I'm sure everyone knows who I am talking about. If not, then you probably know him as "the first openly gay man in the NFL draft".

One of the things that I like about him is that after his statement, he's tried directing attention back to "how (he) plays". Because who he is attracted to really isn't a factor in how he will do on the field. Which is sort of the point of him coming out, to challenge an outdated stereotype and maybe give a few more players the courage to be who they actually are in a public forum.

The danger, of course, is that he will end up being another Tim Tebow. A guy who was a good college quarterback, but people hyped because of his being a conservative Christian. He did OK in the NFL, but he just wasn't starting quarterback material, and ended up being more trouble than he was worth... like many star college athletes who can't make the cut, he is now out of the NFL.

Religious groups, and people who really don't know a lot about football cried foul, saying that it was because he spoke his mind, that he was being persecuted for who he was. The people who watched his games, knew that once the opposing teams had seen some tape on him, he really couldn't offer much and didn't seem interested in learning.

Which brings me back to Michael Sam. He's on the small side to play defense in the league. Can he? That is to be determined. Other guys "his size" (if you saw him walking down the street, you wouldn't think he was a "little guy", it's only on a defensive line where that comes up) have certainly been able to make their mark. He's going to be tested, and some team is going to need the faith in his ability to grow in their system. That means not being a starter right away, and learning the game from the veterans.

I'm hoping that "The Left" gives him time and encouragement to actually do that, rather than go down the Tebow path and follow the example set by "The Right". Where "who is he" matters more than what he does on the field.

Speaking of the NFL, because again, the internet loves it... there is a proposed rule change to make "uttering racial slurs on the field" a 15 yard "unsportsmanlike conduct".

This is obviously fallout from the hazing/bullying case within the Miami Dolphin organization that has received a great deal of attention.

One of the things that was said was that they "have microphones all over the field". Which, last time I checked, wasn't true. The referees have them, and during big games you can have a couple players in the helmets. Maybe field mikes can pick up some of the stuff... but when was the last time you heard what players were saying to each other when they lined up facing each other? If this going to be a "if the Ref hears it?" Is it going to be "if someone complains?"

As a fan of the game, and of humanity as a whole, I like that the issue of racism is being taken seriously.

But this feels like it's more for show than to actually deal with an actual situation. I predict that the first time this is used to nullify a big play, in a crucial part of a game, that there will be an explosion from sports fans - and instead of making progress in our interactions with each other, that there will be a backlash against "being PC".

Especially after the last couple of seasons the NFL referees have had with blown calls and controversial decisions, you would hope that no one would be putting *more* decision-making over penalties into their hands. Especially when it comes to such an important everyday issue.

I'm hoping that the NFL can figure out how to change the culture that needs to be changed without distracting from the actual sport.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but that's because they are racists.

I know it's true because I read it on the internet, just a couple sentences ago. They can't print things on the internet unless they are true.

Your Nazi-loving racist friends aren't going to sign up because of their hatred of all people, especially minorities and gay people, oh, and women. They definitely hate women.

These Sexism Nazi racist people who don't sign up for Season 9 have no regard for anything other than their pedophilic ways. They mansplain that they don't have the time or interest in signing up for Idol, but we know the truth.

There are some people who get upset about today, but not me.

I love it!

I'm a romantic *and* I love a good massacre! What's not to love about the day??

My only regret is that the Season hasn't already started so that I could celebrate it by eliminating a bunch of you.

Oh well, I'll have to make up for that later!

In the meantime, spend today with the people you love - and by "the people you love", I mean here. :)

Ignore those people in your "real life", they don't *really* love you. Not like Idol loves you!

Something that I wish had been a hoax is that I clicked on something ridiculous today, and got what I deserved.

It was a story with the headline that Beatles fans were upset with Katy Perry. I missed the tribute last night, but I was curious about what horrible thing she could have done.

It turns out that she changed the lyric "man" to "girl" in "Yesterday". You know, much like people do when they are female and sing a song originally performed by a guy, or the other way around.

The internet outrage turns out to be just a couple people with nothing better to do. But for some reason this was on the front page of Yahoo this morning.

Yes, I was suckered in my click bait. We all have been. Some people even write it, because it's easy money. I get it. I still don't like it.

Is the world really so hard up for things to talk about that we need to find that smallest percent of idiots and give them a soapbox, in order to make a little money? Are we really that bored that we want to read it, and join in the comments page? Seriously people, the only comments pages you should EVER read are in LJ Idol!! Ignore the rest of them! :)

I explained to him that no, there are 24. But he just kept right on talking.

Fortunately though, he's going to be ready to go when it does come! How about you?

Either that, or she has gotten to the point in her career that she can now just sit back and troll the internet. Possibly while she is drunk.

What do you wish had turned out differently in your favorite novels/series of novels?
Or heck, what have you read from the author of (see above) that made you think that they needed to stop taking drugs before they spoke?

In 2000, I started hearing about an old ex-Navy Seal named Rudy Boesch who on the first season of Survivor. I would hear his quotes and wonder why the hell no one had voted this offensive guy out. I couldn't understand why he was so beloved.

Then I actually saw him - and the comments made a lot more sense in context of who he was. He's a guy who was born in 1928 and spent pretty much all of his life in the military. There is a huge cultural divide between the world as he knows it, and the post-internet existence.

When he was featured during the Survivor reunion in 2013, the reaction to him was *much* different.

The words he used hadn't changed. The respect that he had for Richard Hatch hadn't changed. The world around him had.

I think there are a lot of Rudys out there, wondering what the hell is going on.

It's easy to dismiss it as "homophobic", shut them out and wait for them to die.

But I know that my own grandparents said some of the same things, with far less affection. I'm sure other people had family members who have, not because they hate gay people, or minorities, or anyone else. But more because they just were never exposed to any different ideas. Changing minds comes slowly - and, from a historic perspective, more and more blocks seem to be falling into place these days that it's definitely too fast for some to adjust.

Which doesn't make them evil. It just makes them wrong.

Nor should society sit on it's hands to finally right some of the injustices, waiting for people to catch up. Of course it shouldn't.

It just feels like there is a growing trend of further segmenting the population, and people are too prone to attack each other rather than listen and educate.

There's more going on backstage at Idol than at a Dustin Hennessey support group meeting!!

Of course, there isn't really any action at that meeting, so by definition, we have more! Just because it's an unfair example doesn't mean it's not an example! :)

Amanda Palmer will be swinging by later to talk about, well, it really doesn't matter what she will talk about, it's going to upset someone! So make sure to pack a lunch!

I'm sure something will happen today that will make both of those old news. Or "older than they already are" news! The internet will be fuming and clickbait will flow from the fingertips and out into the world, to be consumed!

With so many people stuck somewhere in a snowbank, that is just going give people more time to rage! Which means, more entertainment for the rest of us!

In related news to "not knowing what Idol is about". I've started doing interviews. I think the toughest question, from someone who doesn't know about Idol, is "what is LJ Idol". Because I want to start rambling on about the philosophical and social implications of what makes this group so awesome - and then I realize that they are just looking for a "a writing competition with reality show twists and turns". It is kind of difficult to pigeonhole though, because Idol is in a class entirely by itself!

A couple questions that have come out of that though, that I feel are things that people strolling by will want to know:

- When is Sign up? March 3rd.

- How do I sign up? There will be a posted sign up sheet available on March 3rd. You will follow the instructions on what to do. There is no "form" or submission process.

- How much does it cost? Not a penny. There are ways to contribute, if you are so inclined, including becoming a Patron of Idol. But it doesn't cost you anything to sign up or participate in Season 9.

- What is the prize? Eternal glory!!! (plus an icon and a banner)

- Why should I sign up? Your Mom and I talked it over, and she thinks you should do it/ thinks you should not do it. (depending on how likely you are to listen to your Mom!)
