Green Room - Week 25 - Day 8

We filled the gas tank a couple nights ago - it was $2.91 a gallon! That's the lowest I've seen it in a really long time.

Of course, those numbers are probably going to climb back up after the mid-term elections. For "some reason", that just seems to be the way it works! ;)

Since LJ hasn't fixed the bug yet, I'm going to link directly to the polls that are closing tonight (AKA - ALL OF THEM!)

There is the Redemption Tribe: http://www.livejournal.com/poll/?id=1986105
The Main Tribe: http://www.livejournal.com/poll/?id=1986106

And there is also Last Chance Idol: http://www.livejournal.com/poll/?id=1986346

That's a lot of talent, on a really narrow ledge, that needs you to order to keep on going!

Voting is *tight* in a lot of cases, so your voice here could very much help tip the balance. So - in your opinion, what's the best stuff out there this week?

For a long time, the best thing I'd ever written was my solo show, TRUE STORY. Then I revived the show two summers ago and realized I'd outgrown it :)

Now I think it's probably the memoir that I finished last spring. I hope someone buys it :) What I like about it is that it's the truth to the best of my recollection and nobody comes off particularly well. Which sounds kind of lame, but for me the process of writing it was all about coming to terms with not blaming other people, being honest about my own shortcomings, and being willing to lay my life on the table for other people to pick apart.

You're safe :) It's a time period where we didn't know each other, between knowing each other and knowing each other again.

My young adult novel, on the other hand...

Sounds like a good process. :)

I don't know about always not blaming others though. Sometimes other people are toxic, and they do manipulate you and mess you up. Of course you can try to figure out why you were vulnerable to that, but they are still responsible for their toxic behavior.

Totally :) It is a book in which nobody wins!

Best? I think it's that sci-fi novel sitting on my desk, waiting for me to start mailing it out. The characters are engaging, it covers worldviews that are creepy / universal / forward-looking / now, and I think it captures the linguistic essence of what I do. (Which, for something with 0 footnotes and 0 weird formatting, is a neat accomplishment.)

In recent memory? My tale with Coyote and Hawk. I surprised myself with it because I honestly didn't think I could pull off having animals-as-characters-who-also-speak without having them sound like they should be in a little kid's book. It'd been an idea I'd had kicking around for a while too. I'm happy I had the opportunity to write it or else it'd still be an idea.

I read Felicia Day's commentary on GG just a little bit ago, and thought "yeah... that sounds about right" and then saw that she was doxxed, like, minutes after posting it. Siiiiigh. I don't even know what people are thinking with this kind of crap.

And, uh, I just found out about the Canadian shootings. I have been under a rock (relatively speaking) for the last couple of days. I'm still trying to catch up on things and figure out what all has happened (I think... I might rely on the internet for too much of my news. Maybe).

(Also, it's probably a sign of... something? That I heard about Felicia Day before the Canadian Parliament. I, uh, exist in a very special ecological niche online, I guess.

I am the worst judge of my own work, so the "best thing" is awfully hard to choose. I think the thing that the most folks have really liked and which I have been fairly satisfied with is a novella-length story about a girl who turns people to stone. It's set in Florida, and I think the fact that I grew up there really comes through in the atmosphere.

That is a heavy question.

The most well-known thing I've ever written is Valley, of course, but it's over five years old now and I can write more good these days. ;)

I honestly don't know the answer.

My novella. I like that it's a complete story - beginning, middling, ending. The whole package. The short form really doesn't satisfy in that way.

I adhere to the Throbbing Gristle philosophy. When asked why they make the music they do, they said they were tired of going into record shops and not being able to buy their albums.
