And that's what I came to be judged on. MY writing. MY vision. So intersections - or suggested ones - already provide too much distraction from that reason for participating, and inherently contradict the core reasons most of us are here, even if they might end up fun for other reasons.

IMO that's what's been the issue during this particular season. It's not just you -- it's been the unspoken curtain that's been hanging over everything: Everyone is out for their own writing, their own vision. Except for reading/commenting and the occasional foray into the GR, everybody scurries back into their own little corner until the next prompt is posted. There's nothing inherently wrong with this -- it's what creative types do. BUT...

As for the necessity-for-twists theory: LJI is like Facebook. It has a community because it developed that community in the right place at the right time. That's the main reason for ongoing mindshare.

Exactly. Idol has always been, first and foremost, a community. Some seasons are more "community spirited" than others. I don't know about you, but I've noticed this downward spiral from "community" to "self" for a couple of seasons now. It makes me particularly sad because community is an integral part of this game. I know I'm not the only one who thinks that. Getting to know people, IMO, is just as important as the writing.

But, in my mind, it's the very sort of gesture that calls into question why any of us should continue to bother. Is this shit really about writing (I know, I know; at least 75% of the time, it's definitely not), or is it about wondering when Gary will take his next snort of clown powder and decide to mass-teabag everyone still left in the game?

His job, as the moderator, is to throw these curve balls when we least expect them. If he didn't, Idol would become just like every other writing community that's still active here on LJ.

(I'm not trying to pick a fight with all this, btw -- I'm just really curious as to what people are thinking, that's all. I also don't like seeing a dear friend of mine being skewered even though some people think it's seriously deserved).
