Hm. That's interesting. I did NO pimpage last season at all unless I thought I was in danger, and then I may have mentioned it in my LJ. I didn't pimp anyone else at all. I also only commented sporadically and took very little part in the green rooms. Not out of anything except that I had a lot going on, and was doing nano as well.
This year I decided to try and partake socially as well, and part of that has been a weekly top ten of what I think are the best entries. By best, of course, I mean "the ones I liked the most", which certainly doesn't mean that I don't like any others, or even that it's anything other than my opinion. It never occurred to me that that might turn me into a target, I just wanted to make sure the ones I enjoyed were getting attention. Also, I know there are a couple of people on my FL who go and vote for my entry because they like me and think I am a good writer, and I know they can't be bothered to read all of them (my husband for example). I don't REALLY think it's at the stage yet where that might swing a vote, and I also don't think there are actually that many of them, but if it is, I'd like to pass that around a bit. Pointing them at a manageable list of entries I like is a way of doing that.
I guess if it turns me into a target it does. What I *have* found, thus far, is that it has allowed me to befriend and develop the beginnings of friendships with some of my favourite writers in the game, and that's worth more to me than winning. So, I'll risk it.
