I have a spoiler for this week's Survivor episode.

Not who goes home (no idea about that, and I don't want to know) , but something that has the potential to explode all over the internet (depending on how CBS decides to show it). I'm kind of surprised that it took this long to get to me, considering that this season was filmed over a year ago. But apparently this has been "known to the Survivor community" for quite some time, and just now coming out as a "heads up".

Obviously, I'm not going to reveal it here. BUt I'll respond to emails of anyone interested.

I think it's interesting though that we are completely at the mercy of what CBS decides to show, and how they edit the event. Because that is going to be informing how people see what happens. It's how they are going to digest it, and how they will be reacting to it on the internet.

What is in CBS's "best interests"? Not showing it at all? Showing as much as possible and hoping for a huge social media reaction, even if it's a negative one.

They used to say there is no such thing as bad press. But with social media, I'm not sure that's true anymore.

I guess we will see how it plays out - but again, it's a good reminder that with an edited program - sure, they can only show what you give them (with reality shows) but at the end of the day, someone has to make that call on who to make the good guy and who to make the bad guy... and nuance has a habit of flying out the window.

I've seen that in Idol itself in the past, where people get ideas about other people and just keep building up their personal narratives.

I see it in "Real Life" where the same thing happens.

We are all our personal editors, telling our own stories about what is happening in the world around us.

Speaking of telling our own stories - the Topic thread is right over here, and closes on Monday: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/1001426.html Make sure YOUR story gets told!

Good afternoon!

The company picnic went about as well as company picnics ever go. There was a "mixer" activity that involved finding people from other groups within our "system of care" who fit certain criteria. I didn't feel like doing it. In fact, I spent most of the time off to the side reading my book. One of the coworkers though was extra motivated. She likes meeting new people, and is extremely competitive.

At one point, I just decided to follow her around and she could meet people and I could get the signatures I needed. When that was over, I turned in my bingo card, and I went back to reading my book.

At the end of the picnic, they pulled random bingo cards to win door prizes.

Who won a prize? Yeah, that was me. It was a RTIC tumbler. So, I won something and I mostly avoided other people. So that part is good.

The poll for the main competition closes tomorrow http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/998161.html
and the final Second Chance deadline is an hour after that http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/998873.html

It's not an April Fools joke. All of this is real. But what was been *your* favorite April Fool's joke (today or of all time)

It used to be that if I were even a little bit late posting a Green Room, people would be upset. If there was a day when one didn't go up at all, I'd have a dozen emails, at least.

I got completely swamped at work and life in general has been pretty overwhelming - and 1 person checked in on me. Thank you to that person. :)

I'm doing OK.

How are you?

It also occurs to me that part of the reason for that email was because most of us were already friends. Whereas, even 13 weeks in there are people that I'm not certain actually know each other very well.

So how about it? What are some stuff about you that folks might be surprised to learn? (that you feel like sharing)

Or just ask something you'd really like to know about your fellow contestants! (and those lurking)

People might be surprised to learn that the Second Chance poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/996359.html and that the main competition topic is up as well: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/997016.html But that would just prove they haven't really been paying attention. Because I've mentioned those things before!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Chuck Berry is dead.

I was lucky enough to see him perform once. He was absolutely incredible. (Pretty sure the only reason why he was doing it was as part of his community service - since it was a free show and he didn't allow any cameras there)

It's strange, because it's literally a case of "Old guy dies". Which is kind of what happens. He lived a long life and added so much to the world of music during the time. It still ends up being a bit of a surprise. Like that thing you expected would happen - heck, I'm sure some people thought it happened years ago - and when it does you still have to take a moment, because damn, you are now living in a world without Chuck Berry, and that takes some adjustment...

Honestly, it's kind of like my grandparents (in a more detached way of course) well, I knew they would old and would die soon - but there's that part of you that just can't process living in a world where they aren't around, so it kind of goes into the back of your head and you just don't think about it, until suddenly you have to...

I'm sure every one has someone (or a situation like that).

I've started watching Iron Fist. So far it's decent, but I keep hearing the bad reviews, so that's kind of hanging over it.

Of course, a lot of the bad reviews started during the casting, and that people have been rooting for it to do poorly. So I'll see for myself if it's any good or not. If it's not, it certainly won't be because I didn't come in with a (mostly) open mind about it.

The Second Chance poll closes tomorrow: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/992643.html
and it's the deadline for the main competition's entries: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/993116.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Happy Daylight Savings Time. I made sure to adjust my clock and went back to adjust the poll closing time as well http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/991458.html

The Second Chance topic post was already correct: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/991512.html

So make sure to get in those votes, and the entries!

We're starting Spring Break this week and had all sorts of plans - none of which has ended up happening. So no idea what we are doing for the next few days! How about you?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Due to severe, and unexpected circumstances I need to push the deadline for Second Chance Idol's first topic back to Monday http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/986817.html So you have a little extra time to make sure you are going to get something in.

I'm OK. There are just some "adulting" things that I wish I didn't have to deal with, but I do.

Anyone want to trade? You can be the responsible one and I can go be fun and just have a good time?

One thing that isn't going to change, or pass though is that there is a poll currently going on: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/987604.html

So make sure to get out there and support your favorites!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Due to where the weekends have fallen in the Idol cycle, and the extended deadlines - it's a *second* Weekend Edition for Week 9!

The poll closes tomorrow at 7pm EST, so make sure to get out there and support your favorites!http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/983712.html

Hopefully one of those favorite things is Idol itself - and you want to introduce people to it via Second Chance http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/981280.html

We're so close to our 1,000th member, it would be a shame to leave that on the table. But that seems to be what is going to occur. I guess that means the excitement will wait for later.

We've been watching the short films nominated for Oscars. I don't know about you, but I don't tend to think about the short films that are out there - the live action, documentaries and animation that really raise the bar. These have been amazing.

What has caught you by surprise lately (in a good way)?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
There is a Write-Off happening right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/982377.html

So make sure to read, comment and vote for your favorites!

3 people enter. 1 person emerges victorious.

The new topic http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/981676.html and Work Room http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/981915.html are also up.

as is the Second Chance sign-up sheet: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/981280.html Make sure to spread the word about that!

What's up tap for your weekend? Mine is still being decided, but it sounds like it will involve hiking.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Before I get to anything else, I missed a special birthday yesterday and wanted to make sure I mentioned it - Happy Birthday to our own [livejournal.com profile] yamyam_kat! I hope it was a good one/ *kicks you for being a mini-hippie because that would be the "treating everyone equally regardless of age thing to do*. ;)

The poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/979718.html

So make sure to get over there and give your favorite entries some love! That's what Valentines Day is all about right? Giving some love? Or massacring a bunch of people. Maybe expressing your love by shooting random people through the heart with arrows. I'm not sure exactly what it's about, but I'm sure I'm going to get it sooner or later...

The point being to make sure to support the folks you want to see more of, and of course, tell folks who *aren't* currently in Idol to check it out as well. This only works as well as people can spread the word. Otherwise it becomes a weird echo chamber - and that's not any fun for anyone. So get the word out! *Especially* get the word out because when I come back from "wedding stuff", they might have a chance to do something about not being in Idol. Or should I say, they might have another chance to do something about that. So definitely start putting that out there...

Which kind of dovetails into my other thought (I only have one at a time) about how when we have huge seasons, I always hear "there are TOO MANY people to read!" and this season was really small compared to Season 9 (which was mega-hyped, whereas this was a lot more low-key, so that makes sense) and I keep hearing about low numbers *while at the same time* hearing that it's still too many people to read. ;) It's funny how that works. No big "nature of humanity" conclusion. It just amuses me. (and is the type of thing that might get some folks fired up... One thing I will say about this season, so far, is the total lack of drama. (at least on *my* radar.) Which I also think puts it in the "low key" category. That said, this thing is far from over - and there's always *someone* who gets annoyed at SCI, so we might not be out of the woods yet on that... there are advantages and disadvantages to the pot being stirred. I'm glad that's it's not happening *right now*, because I have other stuff going on. :) But it does have me looking over my shoulder wondering who is going to be the first one to break! Will it be YOU???? *cue dramatic music*.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We just got back from picking out our wedding cake. (after the group service we will be going to the nearby park with the family and friends who show up for a short "reception"/excuse to eat cake.

There are still so many details to handle in this "on-the-fly", with a couple traditional elements (cake being one). We don't even have wedding rings (we both have rings to use, but not that one "symbol of marriage" to exchange. It's times like this that I wish we were having a mini-season about to start. :D In Idol news though, this might just guarantee that I'd be willing to have one!)

Further in Idol news - there is a poll going on right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/976026.html It closes tomorrow evening, so make sure you vote for your favorites and let other people know what is going on, because that's only way they are going to know!

How is YOUR weekend going?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Cynthia and I were in the line for "It's a Small World" tonight.

Yes, we were. Don't overthink it. Just go with it.

Maybe it's our way of protesting, by embracing a world where everyone comes together by singing in English and all dressing in white and for some reason inviting previously unseen clowns to show up in balloons.

Anyway - we were at the head of the line when the family in front of us had a bit of a run-in with the cast member. We saw the tail end of the exchange - with the cast member telling them they needed to get in line and get in the boat (at which point the teenage boy in the group literally *lept into the boat*).

Cynthia and I turned to each other with a "Damn", but it wasn't until a few minutes later when we were laughing about what we had seen, that we realized that it wasn't *the same "DAMN" moment for us.

I had seen the exchange and thought the family was really rude and while maybe a bit more terse that they are trained to be, that the cast member was dealing with a bad situation.

Cynthia had seen the exchange and saw the cast member as being completely out of line and nasty, and while the family may not have been on their best behavior, that it still didn't warrant that level of snark from her.

Why am I bringing this up? Because people see the same thing differently.

You can be right there, at the same event, taking it all in together - and still come away with a different experience.

This is true of life in general.
This is true of folks playing Idol.
But what occurred to me in that moment when I realized I was going to talk about it today, was that it's important to remember in your own writing. That people may think they are on the same page, but it's probably rare when they actually are completely so.

It's only be drilling down do you find the important differences, which are sometimes fundamental.

The thread for your entry links is: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/971359.html so make sure you get out there!

The poll is happening right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/966583.html

So make sure you are getting out and supporting your favorites.

Speaking of "getting out" this morning I went out to the manatee viewing center. It's only my third time being out there, and it's one of those experiences where you can get a little overwhelmed.

Over a hundred manatees (some of them babies) gathered in the waters around the power plant. (they come there when the water starts getting cold). Seeing manatees in the wild is one of the cool things about living in Florida, but that many of them, in one place just kind of makes you take it all in.

Especially when you see the scars from the propellers that have hit them over the years.

That kind of makes you hate people.

Speaking of hating people, I met [livejournal.com profile] lawchicky last night... heh, oh come on, like I was going to miss *that* transition!

Actually, I met *three* Idolers last night! I'll admit, I completely forgot her husband was [livejournal.com profile] handtruck who briefly participated in Season 8. Also, for some reason, I didn't connect the dots, until we were introduced that they were the parents of Idol Minor fan favorite Olivia!

I always have so much fun meeting Idolers, and it's (almost) never enough time. (I've stayed with a couple before, so there was enough time there. :D) It's always cool - and a little surreal to come face-to-face with the fact that there are actual people on the other side of the internet.

(and yes, I did brutally kick her like the hippie she is. She deserved it for taking a bye! :D)

New Year's Eve 2011, I was sitting in my apartment, with my cats. I didn't have much to hope for in the New Year, but I put on the Hold Steady's "A Positive Jam" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXIaTOuCk_Q because that was how I wanted to start things - in face of being absolutely miserable, I decided that I was going to try to send out some "good vibes" anyway.

A few months later, I met Cynthia and my life completely changed.

Every year since then, that is how I've started my year.

Not saying it's voodoo. But come on, do you honestly think I'm going to risk it? ;)

Happy New Year Idolers!

I know there are a lot of people nervous about 2017, but I hope that it manages to surprise us all in the best ways!

The Break will be ending on Monday, and then we are back in business. So enjoy these last few moments of your freedom - and get in your Break Week topics - or at least get out there and read/comment on the ones already posted: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/961914.html

Start your year giving back to other writers, and to your own talents.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Happy 1st night of Hanukkah! (tonight)
Merry Christmas (tomorrow)
Happy Kwanzaa (Monday)
Happy Yule (started the 21st but according to Google continues until the 1st, so technically I'm not late)
Happy Belated : Milad un Nabi! (totally missed that one, it was earlier than last year)
and belated Festivus! (yesterday)
Happy anything else you might celebrate!

As for Idol, we celebrate the day that Santa brings me presents! Not you. Presents are only for *good* people, not damn hippies!

Happy Present Weekend to me!

How is your "extended weekend" going?

Don't forget the Break Week topics: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/961914.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's the second weekend of Week 3. :)

The contestant-only voting is happening right now, so make sure to get those in to me: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/960470.html

I'm starting to get ready for the Christmas party at the yacht club. Yes, that's where Cynthia's work has their parties.

My work? We have them in the conference room and it consists of a cookie making contest. (this year there was also an ugly sweater and wreath making contest). We had it on Friday, which means extra cookies and getting to leave early for the day, so you can't really beat that - even with a weekend visit to "the yacht club".

Once a year I end up feeling *really* out of place, dressing up and going somewhere that wouldn't want me there any other time of year. :)

But it is interesting to see just what the inside of those places is like! I suppose that's probably a good thing, getting to see life from a different perspective.

Those with jobs where you go into an office - what are they doing the celebrate?

Others (or them as well) - what have been some of your favorite 'holiday parties' that you have gone to/heard about?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The Phantom Menace is on TV right now. Specifically, it's on my TV.

I've got to say, I may have given it too much credit at the time. I remember all the naysayers and thinking while it had flaws, that it was still entertaining. At least at the parts that we've seen so far, I've got to say that those people had some decent points.

Has that happened with you? What was it that just lost it's sheen with the passage of time, or maybe something that gained it?

One thing that definitely is still awesome is the Topic thread where people are posting their Week 3 entries http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/958277.html another is the Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/958506.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's Saturday when this is going up - which means tomorrow (Sunday) at 3 pm EST is the deadline for your Week 2 Idol entries. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/954961.html

Well, regardless of when this was going up, that would still be the deadline. But I wanted to give some context!

What's going on with your weekend?

So far mine has been running errands. I'm sure the rest will be "Idol related"/running more errands. If I sit for too long, I'm sure my weekend will be decided for me. ;)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's "Black Friday".

This used to be a much bigger deal for me. But I haven't gone out to anything yet. I used to love just walking around in the mall or major store in the frenzy of the crowd. Most of the time I wouldn't even be buying anything. I just liked to people watch, to feel the energy coming off them.

Back when I was living on my own, a friend of mine would actually pay me to come with him to midnight sales and stand in line for him.

Last night and today? I've stayed home with my family. Which is an entirely different kind of people watching.

What have you been up to? How are you planning on spending your weekend?

I posted this in the Green Room yesterday, but as a comment, so it may have gotten lost in the shuffle:

If you are buying anything from Amazon this year - LJ Idol has an Amazon store. http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20 If you use that link to get to Amazon, it's an easy way of "giving back". More importantly though - the store has a lot of books and other projects featuring past and present LJ Idol contestants! If you want to support some of the other folks who have walked in these halls over the past 10 years, here is the chance to do so! Also, if there are anything I missed, or if the newbies have books available on Amazon, let me know and I'll add them to the store!

Of course, the way to "give back" right now is with your votes! Support the folks who want to see go further in the competition. Support the entries you enjoyed! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/953518.html Read, comment (who doesn't love getting comments?) and vote for your favorites!

I had my first LJ Idol dream last night. I guess that means the season is officially started!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I've been boycotting Hamilton before it was cool.

And by "boycotting" I mean that I haven't been in New York or Chicago, and they haven't launched a national tour yet - and even if I were in those places, I wouldn't be able to get tickets.

But that doesn't stop this from being any less of a boycott.

I feel very strongly, much like our President-elect, that we need more safe spaces for people, so they aren't harassed.

So please - if you have them - please send me all of your Hamilton tickets. I will keep them safe and *help you* boycott this awful show. See how nice I am? I will HELP YOU out by making sure you accidentally don't end up going to see Hamilton, or feel the peer pressure from people to break off your principled boycott and be dragged into the theatre.

If I have your tickets, then you can stand proud. If I don't, then who knows what horrible things could happen.

Think of yourselves and your values. Think of the children growing up in a world where Hamilton exists - and do the right thing by sending me your tickets!

And because that's "politics adjacent" (and seriously, this is your space, I'm going to keep reminding people of that because I want to make sure the Newbies get it into their head, and that the veterans who haven't been around in awhile remember) let's always make sure to have things that aren't. Such as opening up the floor with - What are you up to this weekend?

Anything fun planned? Anything not so fun?

My bonus daughter's paternal grandfather died a couple days ago, so the end of this week has been filled with a lot of talking about that, and dealing with death.

Speaking of - losing SHARON JONES yesterday? It popped up on my FB feed and just slammed me in the heart.

2016, you can leave any time you like. Not sure what 2017 has in store, but let's all hope it's better.
