100 Weeks

This should have been done a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to post it then due to being extremely distracted. Or rather, I'm quite glad that I was distracted! :)

Getting to 100 Weeks is starting to get a little crowded, but it's still a remarkable accomplishment!

Congratulations to

[livejournal.com profile] ellakite
and
[livejournal.com profile] beeker121

Thank you for your dedication to Idol, and for all of your hard work and creativity to get to this point! Here's to continuing to add to that total!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
When I announced that there were going to be 4 contestants leaving this week, I didn't know it was going to come down to only 1 of those spots being from the actual poll.

[livejournal.com profile] lawchicky sacrificed.
and there were 2 unrecorded "bye outs" that I am treating as sacrifices:
[livejournal.com profile] dreamsreflected and [livejournal.com profile] mossmonday

Which means there is only one more slot left.

We are saying goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] waveform_delta

Again, all veterans. I'm starting to wonder what the newbies are putting in the water!

Thank you so much to all of you for coming out this season, and I hope that we will see you in the Home Game - and in the upcoming Second Chances!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
We just got back from picking out our wedding cake. (after the group service we will be going to the nearby park with the family and friends who show up for a short "reception"/excuse to eat cake.

There are still so many details to handle in this "on-the-fly", with a couple traditional elements (cake being one). We don't even have wedding rings (we both have rings to use, but not that one "symbol of marriage" to exchange. It's times like this that I wish we were having a mini-season about to start. :D In Idol news though, this might just guarantee that I'd be willing to have one!)

***

Further in Idol news - there is a poll going on right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/976026.html It closes tomorrow evening, so make sure you vote for your favorites and let other people know what is going on, because that's only way they are going to know!

***

How is YOUR weekend going?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I'm not going to lie, after last night http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/976853.html I did consider cancelling this week of voting. But I *think* she would want someone to be eliminated, and maybe have a shot at coming back via Second Chance! (Note - I could be wrong about that. But she was very much into "competing in Idol and doing as well as she could*.

So the poll is still going - http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/976026.html and make sure to support the entries you've enjoyed and the people you want to see more of this season!

***

What do you have going on this weekend?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I spent all morning and into the afternoon in a meeting, looking at spreadsheets.

Want to keep me *extra* excited? Have me go over spreadsheets.

Want something that *actually* keeps my interest? Here's a poll: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/976026.html

What about you? What about your job makes you want to put your head into an oven?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/976026.html

A link I just happened to see this morning: http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-oldest-human-ancestor-20170130-story.html

Less than two weeks until I get married!

What's going on in YOUR life that's gotten you all excited?

***

Please note: that the previously announced drop has been edited. [livejournal.com profile] n8tastrophe had one bye remaining, and has taken it.
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard that I ended up turning down the offer to become the next Supreme Court Justice. There just wasn’t enough time to do that with everything else going on.

So, you’re stuck with me for now.

Which means I’m back to torturing you in true Idol fashion, with a poll!

Before we get to that though, we have a drop to announce. Goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] n8tastrophe - thanks for coming out this season. I hope we can see you in the Home Game! False alarm. Please mark him as a bye for this week.

strike>As sad as I am to have to lose someone to Real Life, I’m so pleased to see so many people fighting to stay in this season! That makes me happy… and to celebrate that happiness, we will be losing 4 contestants from Tribe 1!

(spoiler: there’s a sacrifice in there, so it’s 3 spots up for grabs and 1 going that we already know. /spoiler)

I celebrate in strange ways though.

YOU can celebrate though by taking the time to read, comment and vote for your favorites - and then tell a friend. Or two friends. Or 7 friends and a hamster. You don’t know what a hamster might like to read… YOU DON’T KNOW!!!!!!

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, the poll will be closing Sunday, Feb 5th at 7pm EST

Good luck to everyone!

Today is your deadline http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/974915.html and right now things are looking more like Week 5's massive bye-fest rather than the sweet sight of Week 6's redemption story. Hopefully you are just a bunch of slackers and the rest of the field will get there by tonight. (Honestly, you're a bunch of slackers regardless. Damn hippie slackers. Don't tell me you've been too busy interviewing for the job of Acting US Attorney General! You could have fit in an entry as well, it doesn't take that much time to use a rubber stamp!)

Last night Cynthia saw something online that made her go into a rage. Was it a story about the government? No.

Was it a story about something horrible that happened to a child? Nope.

Was it... no. Whatever you were about to ask, that wasn't it. UNLESS you were about to ask "Was it that meme with Kermit the Frog?" In which case - yes, that was it.

I know you've seen it - it usually has something cynical and snarky followed by "but that's none of my business" with a picture of Kermit drinking Lipton tea. I'm not entirely sure why Kermit is doing that. Was there a Muppets endorsement of Lipton at some point? Is this entire meme just a Lipton counter-ad campaign? I'm not sure.

But any cynical or snarky use of that beloved figure makes Cynthia completely see red.

For me? It's seeing people using Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbes) on their trucks. I don't care if he's peeing, or praying, or just standing there. Bill Watterson told you NOT to do it, and you are doing it. Which means you deserve to be shot in the face.*

(*Note - maybe not literally. Although, perhaps. That could just be an additional factor in the reasons it needs to happen.)

What seemingly simple thing makes YOU go into "irrational anger mode"?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
On my way to pick up my marriage license!

What have you been up to - other than being out protesting that we will be letting Second Chancers into our borders at some point this season?

The topic is here: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/974915.html#

and please take advantage of having a Mentor in the Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/975211.html
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
I just made a post about some folks who made it to 100 weeks, which fits nicely into the idea that everyone has an origin story, a beginning place they called "home", a "square one"...

Everyone has a tale of

Where I’m From

Which is your topic this week.

The deadline to link your entries back to this thread is Tuesday, Jan 31st at 8pm EST

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The Topic post is now up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/974915.html

We are fortunate enough to not only have a Mentor, but the winner of Season 7!

Her Idol story itself is pretty amazing - being the first returning player to win the game, after needing to drop a couple seasons in a row. She just kept coming back, and kept getting better, until that time it "clicked". After that? Well, she talks about that below... but let's just say she's been pretty unstoppable.

Definitely take advantage of having her at your disposal this week!

Hello, you crazy people! Long time, no read!

It's me, [livejournal.com profile] amenquohi, formerly known as "Seven of Nine." (But Gary wrecked that by having more than nine seasons but I'm not bitter. Much.)

I haven't hung on Idol much since winning Season 7, but that's because I've been busy. Winning the season gave me the guts to try for a blogging job with a major women's magazine, I did that for a few years, started blogging for another magazine, started my own blog, then self-pubbed a half-dozen books before finally landing a bonafide 2 book deal with a big 5 publisher. Yeah, baby.

So here's the shameless plug for my YA fantasy, TRAVELER (http://amzn.to/2k2tQDB), out on February 7th. Check it out!

And now here's the part where I impart all my writerly wisdom, right? Right.

I'm going to concentrate on something specific, because the world is full of generic writer advice and because I happen to think it's something I'm reasonably decent at: dialogue.

When I've got a scene in mind, I have a couple of techniques to work the dialogue.

First, act it out. Get up, walk around. Or sit in the car. Play all the roles. Shout, argue, snark a lot. Try out various lines and retorts and make notes while you do it. Or set your phone to voice record.

Second, remember that written dialogue should not sound like speaking in real life. Seriously. Trim out extraneous crap. Don't be redundant, unless the character does it on purpose to be annoying or to make a point. Trim the word "that' everywhere you can. Monologue when you have to, and sometimes, you have to

Third, watch your dialogue tags. Go light on the adverbs. If your characters are answering or speaking with a modifier ("he said, grimly" or "she answered cheerfully") more than 1/4 of their lines, you're doing it wrong. Don't be afraid to keep it to "he said" and "she answered" because those are transparent to the reader and don't interrupt the flow. Save those modifiers for when they can really deliver a punch.

Above all, don't have people talking just to talk. You may have a great, snarky conversation running through your head, but if it doesn't further the plot along or add to a character's development, it's useless. If you're like me and write very dialogue-heavy stories, it feels like cutting off an arm to cut your carefully crafted lines, but if it's not moving anything or anyone forward, you gotta do it. You just do.

And now I'll leave you with a great little video ( http://youtu.be/zJGX2raiafU ) imparting more advice on the subject. I hope you find it entertaining and instructive.

I'll be hanging out in the workroom this week and happy to offer any advice with the caveat that I am absolutely not an expert in this field, just some schmuck who writes stories and worked her ass off to get where she is (and still has her day job). I've written memoirs, self-help books, fantasy, romance and now YA. And blogs and fanfic. And of course, a whole bushel full of delusional LiveJournal Idol entries.

Seven of Nine, signing out.

I promised a massacre that would be a game-changer, and true enough, that's exactly what happened. Definitely some unexpected - and close - results.

With the Rivals, it came down to 1 vote. With the Friends, one of the teams that came in as one of the bottom two did so by an average of less than a vote - and within the team itself by a single vote.

The Friends are losing [livejournal.com profile] tjoel2 and [livejournal.com profile] majesticarky
The Rivals are losing [livejournal.com profile] copyright1983, [livejournal.com profile] m_malcontent, [livejournal.com profile] mac_arthur_park, [livejournal.com profile] poppetawoppet and [livejournal.com profile] pshaw_raven

Goodbye to those leaving us this week, but please Home Game and remember that there will be a time when you will have a chance to get back into the game!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Good afternoon from Iowa!

Today I am casting the "Super Vote" for both the Democratic and Republican caucuses and single-handedly deciding who will win the state's electoral votes!

They fly me out every four years to make this decision, and it's one I take really seriously.

Either that or I'm at home after a morning dental appointment. Whichever sounds more interesting to you.

***

Don't take long to decide though, because you have far more important decisions to be making - such as "Who will get your support" this week in the polls: We are starting the month with extremely high stakes: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/888626.html so tell your friends and neighbors to come out and caucus for your favorites!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The poll is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/888626.html I hope you are taking the time to explore the nooks and crannies (especially the crannies) finding some of the awesome stuff that people have created this week.

But in case someone hasn't - what do YOU recommend that they try?

***

and since the weekend is almost over, why was YOUR weekend better than anyone else's?

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

Welcome to the massacre.

Oh wait, Hi. How are you?

Welcome to the massacre.

I should back up a step or two… the beginning of the universe was… sorry, too far…

This is LJ Idol.

It’s a special mini season. It is called Friends and Rivals. This is Week 7.

Welcome to Massacre week!

Not enough information?

OK. The contestants had the choice of several different topics, they each wrote one of them. Those entries are linked in the poll below.

You can vote for as many of them as you want to support. Because that’s the name of the game: If you love something, support it. Vote for it. Comment to the writers letting them know what you liked about it. Tell your friends about those entries so that they can come do the same.

That’s not just Idol, that’s life: Support the things you love.

Like Massacre week!!!

Maybe you won’t love it. Perhaps you will.

Before we get to that though, we are losing our friend [livejournal.com profile] baxaphobia, who had to drop due to RL - and a couple bye-outs (people who missed the deadline and were out of byes): [livejournal.com profile] lapis_lazuli615 and [livejournal.com profile] muchtooarrogant

If you are with a team (the Friends) this week is a lot easier, the bottom two teams (the votes of the individuals on a team will be added together and then divided by the number of active entries) will be losing one member. (the one with the fewest votes). In other words - the Friends will be losing 2.

The Rivals? They will be losing 5.

Welcome to Massacre Week!

Enjoy your stay.

The poll will close Monday, Feb 1st at 9pm EST

Good luck to everyone!

"and when push comes to shove, I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love"

I'm listening to the soundtrack of "Hamilton" for the first time this morning - and that line reminded me of Idol!

If you haven't listened to it yet ( perhaps you were under the same rock as I have been - in which case, it's MY rock, go find your own!!) go do it now! Or rather, make sure you've submitted your entry first: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/887291.html and then read ahead with what has been submitted so far (tonight is the deadline to get those entries in!) and then go find a copy of the soundtrack.

What have YOU recently discovered? Books? Music? Perhaps one of the many traps I have placed around your home?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Yesterday, there was a question about how votes for teams work, that became a general question about voting. I figured everyone knew, but that was an incorrect assumption on my part.

With teams, voting itself doesn't change: You vote for the entries you want to support, the ones that you read and say "I want to support this"/"I want to read more from this person".

You can vote for as many, or few, as you feel like supporting in a given week.

There are no limits per poll, or in general.

(The only time that isn't true is if you are emailing me votes for a special vote... but I address those as they come up).

With team voting, the final number of votes of the individuals on a team are added together and then divided by the number of active members in a given week (byes are not counted in that total)

This is done for each team. The team with the lowest average vote total loses one member - the one with the lowest vote total.

Given that there was one person who didn't know - that means there are several others who didn't either, but just never mentioned it. All of the polls have been decided by a really small margin. It makes you wonder what would have happened if they have asked their questions earlier!

So I'm opening up the floor - what do you want to know?

(obviously, there are things I can't answer, but if I can, I will)

Your entries are due tomorrow: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/887291.html (that's something everyone *should* know!)

There you go - your links for the day! :)

There seem to be 25 contestants who haven't taken my warning seriously. We will see what will become of them... if anything, maybe the ground will open up and swallow them or maybe they will be lead into a candy factory where they get all the free candy they can handle! Or maybe the floor to the candy factory will open up...

I was reading David Axlerod's assessment of the success of Donald Trump and how people tend to look for someone with "opposing traits" as the outgoing President - and how that relates to what I see online.

There is a definite "anti-PC" vibe that I see in RL that doesn't translate at all online - and a vibe online of being more concerned about social injustice than I see in RL.

Both "sides" seem to think they are the majority, and maybe they are, in their relative pockets. It's not even a political party thing (as much as some would like to pretend it is), because there is a lot of overlap.

I'm wondering if they are just annoying each other so much that it's just building up friction that is driving the forces further and further apart.

There's like three or four thoughts in there that have little to do with each other, but I'm still not awake yet. Hopefully someone can translate. Or find something in my ramble that they can explore.

and threats. Don't forget the threats!!

Technically they were "friendly warnings". Because "friendly warnings" sound nice. Everyone loves "friendly warnings"!

Raise your hand if you like "friendly warnings"!!

Raise both hands if you suspect that this could be a stick-up!!

You're 7 weeks into this adventure.

I've asked you this question before and I'll ask you it again.

Because it's important.

What have you been seeing "out there" that has gotten you curious and what has you shaking your head? I'm NOT asking for names, in fact I prefer you avoid them... but what are you seeing in the competition that you are learning from?

***

The new topics are up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/887291.html

Where are you going with them?

and just to repeat myself: It may be in your best interests to form or join teams in the very near future. Just trying to look out for you.
