In true Idol tradition, it came down to 1 vote that separated who stays and who is leaving us. For awhile, I thought we were going to start Second Chances off with a tie! But in the last hour or so, that one vote ended up reshuffling the deck.

That's why it's important to make sure you are letting people know what's going on over here in this corner of the internet, because you can never be sure if that one vote is what could keep your dreams alive.

Unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to 3 SCI contestants today. All of them are veterans and I really hope we will continue to see them around, and be able to read their work every week as part of the Home Game.

Goodbye to

Thank you for all that you have done this season to help make it special.

As for the rest of you Second Chancers - Congratulations, the new topic will be up later tonight.

A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

When you get a second chance in life, that’s when you have to grab ahold and not let go of it.

This is your Second Chance at LJ Idol, so hold on tight over the next couple of weeks.

We’ve gathered folks who were interested in getting another shot at making a run at it. Unfortunately, there were some folks who didn’t get an entry in, even with the deadline being extended.

Which means, before we even post the poll, it’s time to say goodbye to [livejournal.com profile] cheapxdate, [livejournal.com profile] grail76, [livejournal.com profile] kindabrisk, and [livejournal.com profile] yuniebaby

I’m so glad that you came out this season! I hope we will see you in the Home Game!

As for the rest of the pack, we will be losing 3 contestants from their ranks. Each week will continue to shrink the ranks, until it is time for the survivors to re-enter the main competition!

At that point, joy will ring across the land - or terror. One of those things will ring across the land and all shall rejoice…. Some will rejoice… maybe someone could be vaguely pleased… ;)
The poll closes Friday, March 10th at 9pm EST

Good luck to everyone!

[Poll #2064261]

Good evening!

The Second Chance Idol sign-up sheet is "officially closed", but I have decided to unofficially still accept people until the Week 1 deadline. Mostly because I forgot to give one piece of crucial information, something that no one actually asked me, which is why I forgot to say it.

Unlike previous years, this Second Chance is *just the people who sign up*. If you are eliminated from the main competition, you *are eliminated* and will (hopefully) join the ranks of the Home Game.

It's going to be a pre-determined amount of weeks, and whoever is left standing at the end of it will join the main competition. No revolving door. No strategic decisions on if to advance or not into the main competition during the course of it. No byes. Just a short fight, followed by joining the long struggle.

With that in mind, if people want to sign up http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/981280.html we will continue to accept them until the deadline for the Topic 1 entry, listed below.

As for the topic itself, there really could have been only one choice for this. To me at any rate.

This is your shot at a comeback. This is your shot at redemption.

Which is why your topic is

Not Throwing Away My Shot

Post the links to your entries (and only those, comments should go to the daily Green Room or the Work Room http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/985477.html) in this thread.

The deadline to link your entries here is Monday, March 6th at 7pm EST!

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
One vote in Tribe 1.
Two votes in Tribe 2.

That is how close it was between who was staying and who was leaving. It's why it is important to make sure you cast a vote every week to keep your favorites in the running.

This week we are losing two veterans, and two friends of Idol. One has been around for awhile and the other coming back after a long absence:

[livejournal.com profile] grail76
[livejournal.com profile] worldofcraimar

Thank you so much to both of you for coming out this season. I hope we will continue to see you around!

The one piece of good news? There *will* be a Second Chance later this season. So please Home Game, and be on the look out for your shot to get back into the fray!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Tonight is looming, like a big looming thing threatening to eat some of us.

Because that's what is happening.

The polls close tonight: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/953518.html

and at the end of it, two of your fellow contestants will be eliminated. Maybe someone you enjoy. Maybe you.

So if you have any last minute recommendations, or want to give some love to anyone who doesn't seem to be getting a lot of it, this is the time to speak up!

For those who survive, the new topic goes up tonight as well. (Technically, if you don't - there's always the Home Game, but that doesn't sound as final as the idea that you will be dropped into a pit of acid!!)

In the past, I've seen some surprising results in the first couple of weeks, people that I've thought had "no business" being eliminated. But that's what can happen - there is so much noise, that it's easy for something, or someone, to get lost in it. It's part of that struggle, to find a way to break out of it and get noticed!

So make sure to do your part to get the word out on YOUR favorites! (or even, if you think you are in actual danger this week, to make the case for yourself!)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Good morning and, in the words of Elvis Costello: "Welcome to the Working Week".

It may kill me Elvis. It just might.

There is a poll happening: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/953518.html It's the first one where there will actually be folks going home, so make sure to get over there to read, comment and vote for your favorites - and spread the word, because if you know of something cool and you don't tell anyone about it, then you're risking it going away (in this specific case, they could be eliminated)

With that in mind - Who isn't getting the love they "deserve"?

It's cyber Monday - so I'm sharing our Amazon link again: http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20

Get some cool stuff for your family, friends, or even yourself!

What was your favorite thing about this past weekend/extended weekend for those in the US? Least favorite?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
It's "Black Friday".

This used to be a much bigger deal for me. But I haven't gone out to anything yet. I used to love just walking around in the mall or major store in the frenzy of the crowd. Most of the time I wouldn't even be buying anything. I just liked to people watch, to feel the energy coming off them.

Back when I was living on my own, a friend of mine would actually pay me to come with him to midnight sales and stand in line for him.

Last night and today? I've stayed home with my family. Which is an entirely different kind of people watching.

What have you been up to? How are you planning on spending your weekend?

I posted this in the Green Room yesterday, but as a comment, so it may have gotten lost in the shuffle:

If you are buying anything from Amazon this year - LJ Idol has an Amazon store. http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20 If you use that link to get to Amazon, it's an easy way of "giving back". More importantly though - the store has a lot of books and other projects featuring past and present LJ Idol contestants! If you want to support some of the other folks who have walked in these halls over the past 10 years, here is the chance to do so! Also, if there are anything I missed, or if the newbies have books available on Amazon, let me know and I'll add them to the store!

Of course, the way to "give back" right now is with your votes! Support the folks who want to see go further in the competition. Support the entries you enjoyed! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/953518.html Read, comment (who doesn't love getting comments?) and vote for your favorites!

I had my first LJ Idol dream last night. I guess that means the season is officially started!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Happy Thanksgiving!

The real one. Not the fake Canadian one. The one that is celebrated in 'Merica! Like in Standing Rock. I'm sure they are gathering together today for a nice meal. Right?

(Seriously, I hope someone is doing something nice for those folks today. Even if that "nice" is "not spraying with firehoses". That would be a nice change of pace)

Thanks Gary, way to bring the holiday down...

Speaking of bringing the holiday down - there is a poll up right now: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/953518.html So make sure you get over there and read, comment and vote for your favorites!

You can vote for as many as you want to support - so spread the love! (and pass word along for others to do the same. That's how we get new readers for your work, by word of mouth)

What awkward conversations/moments around the dinner table are you looking forward to today?

We ended up having to change our plans at last minute due to the original host being sick (who doesn't usually do it, but she wanted to have dinner over at her house due to her thinking this was likely her Mom's last Thanksgiving. Given that the Hospice nurse is now staying with them, she was right to think that) But the change actually worked out for the best. This is going to be *a lot* better for us, and far less of a chance for explosions. (due to someone who is known for trying to start fights, because he thinks it's funny, not being a part of those new plans)
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

Hello, and Welcome to Week 1 of LJ Idol, Season 10!

For those of you who might be coming into this without any real idea of what you are witnessing - this is the 10th full season of the one and only LJ Idol, a writing competition mixed with reality show mixed with sticking lit sticks of dynamite down your pants! It starts out slow, but picks up the pace along the way. So you are in for a treat!

178 brave souls signed up for this season - and from what I’ve seen from them so far, I think you are going to be finding some truly unique voices and just plain good stuff to read along the way.

We’ve had an extended “pre-season” this year, giving everyone a chance to warm up. But now things have gotten real, and the the season is truly getting started!

The topic this waek was “I Need The Struggle To Feel Alive”, which is a lyric from a Beach Slang song. In Idol, the “topic” is just the jumping off point - it’s that spark that will take our writers wherever inspiration takes them.

The contestants have been divided into two tribes, based on alphabetical order of their user names. So, in a way, the people who showed up for this season and the names that they have chosen to represent themselves are what has either helped them in the early rounds, or sealed their fate! *cue dramatic music*

The contestant with the entry that receives the fewest votes in each tribe will be eliminated.

So make sure that you are reading, commenting, and voting for your favorites to stay in the fight one more time! If you want to read more from them - the best way to ensure that is to show your support.

The polls will close on Tuesday, November 29th at 9pm EST!

Good luck to everyone!

Good morning.

For me, the last day of sign-ups/the last day of the deadline is like Christmas morning where I'm about ready to see what is under the tree! It takes a really long time to fully unwrap it, and see the winner inside. But the experience itself - and the anticipation of it, is always really exciting!

http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951685.html is where to post the links to your entries

and http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/945807.html is where to sign-up.

Currently, we are waiting for a little less than 100 people to post their Week 1 entry. I'm predicting that there will be some folks who forgot to follow the community and thus already missed the first topic. (one of the dangers of a "slow start" is that people could wander off) Knowing Idolers though, there is probably going to be that traditional rush to post in the last couple of hours!

Today is a "short day" at work. Although I'm not entirely sure *how* short it is going to be. (Rumors being notoriously inconsistent)

For those of you in the US, what sort of Thanksgiving plans do you have? For those who aren't - what sort of turkeys have you been dealing with this week?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Your first entries are due tomorrow: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951685.html

How is everyone doing with that?

I haven't said this before, but it's important. Or at least "important". Make sure to start reading as soon as you can. Don't wait for the poll. Because you're never going to have enough time to finish everything in a poll - something is going to come up. But if you give yourself that head-start, it will be easier.

I'll also give you the heads-up, for those who don't know, that the first poll will probably take me the longest to set up. I'm almost caught up with everything I need to do. But it's also Survivor night (I'm just saying!), and the first poll always takes the longest to put together because it's completely from scratch.

If you still need a little help and encouragement - the Work Room is still open: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951867.html

Tomorrow is also the deadline to sign-up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/945807.html If you sign-up, and don't submit an entry for the week, that's OK. BUT you will be using one of the two "byes" that you have been given to start the game. There are some people who enjoy working without a net though!

So - other than post-election stuff - what news stories have you been following that other folks might have missed? Anything good/interesting happening out there?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Warning: We will not be discussing Roy Roger's horse.

Warning: That may have been a reference that is way too old and/or obscure for younger Idolers and will make the Idolers who *do* know the reference feel a lot older.

The question was asked, in the Weekend Edition - "What about trigger warnings?"

That wasn't the exact question, but I think it is a good jumping off point. (Warning: Kris Kross will make you... Again, some of you will feel really old)

LJ Idol does not have a policy about trigger warnings.

If you want to do them - do them.

If you don't want to do them - don't do them.

Like most things, my advice is, if you do them, to make sure that they don't distract from the actual piece. (For instance: Making sure there is enough of a distinction between where one ends and the other starts is something I've seen folks, in the past, have some trouble with as far as spacing issues go. There are also some that argue that having anything before that important first-sentence dulls the punch.)

Every season though, the people who make up the group have slightly different ideas about what they like, and what they don't.

So I'm throwing it out there for discussion - what do you think about trigger warnings? Where are they needed? How can you use them without taking away from your entry? (is that even something to consider or is the warning more important?)

I've been boycotting Hamilton before it was cool.

And by "boycotting" I mean that I haven't been in New York or Chicago, and they haven't launched a national tour yet - and even if I were in those places, I wouldn't be able to get tickets.

But that doesn't stop this from being any less of a boycott.

I feel very strongly, much like our President-elect, that we need more safe spaces for people, so they aren't harassed.

So please - if you have them - please send me all of your Hamilton tickets. I will keep them safe and *help you* boycott this awful show. See how nice I am? I will HELP YOU out by making sure you accidentally don't end up going to see Hamilton, or feel the peer pressure from people to break off your principled boycott and be dragged into the theatre.

If I have your tickets, then you can stand proud. If I don't, then who knows what horrible things could happen.

Think of yourselves and your values. Think of the children growing up in a world where Hamilton exists - and do the right thing by sending me your tickets!

And because that's "politics adjacent" (and seriously, this is your space, I'm going to keep reminding people of that because I want to make sure the Newbies get it into their head, and that the veterans who haven't been around in awhile remember) let's always make sure to have things that aren't. Such as opening up the floor with - What are you up to this weekend?

Anything fun planned? Anything not so fun?

My bonus daughter's paternal grandfather died a couple days ago, so the end of this week has been filled with a lot of talking about that, and dealing with death.

Speaking of - losing SHARON JONES yesterday? It popped up on my FB feed and just slammed me in the heart.

2016, you can leave any time you like. Not sure what 2017 has in store, but let's all hope it's better.

Edited, because I completely forgot the important links:

Last night was busy, so let's recap for those just tuning in:

The Results of the Veterans poll are in: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951424.html as well as finding out what the advantage is that they, and the newbies winners, were receiving.

The Week 1 topic, the first mandatory one was posted: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951685.html

Note: You do have two byes, but do you really want to start cutting away that safety net out from under you on WEEK 1?

And, because the topic is up, there is a new Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951867.html

The new topic also means that there is a deadline - and I've already stated that it will also be the deadline for people to sign up to play Season 10. So, next Wednesday evening that door will be closing for anyone still on that "should I?" bubble.

How are you doing today?
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
Hello and welcome to the first topic of LJ Idol Season 10!

There was going to be whole spiel here, but I'll save that for the Work Room and just let you know that your first topic is:

I need the struggle to feel alive

The deadline to link your entries back to this thread is Wednesday, Nov 23rd at 8pm EST

(Please remember that the topic thread is for posting of links only - and declaration of a "bye" being taken. You have two of them for this season, usable until the Top 50. All other comments should go to linked entries or to the Work Room)

Have fun!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
The Week 1 topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951685.html

I won't lie, I went back and forth on how to start this season.

Heck, I went back and forth on the deadline. At one point it was going to be Thursday (which happens to be Thanksgiving in the US) and Cynthia literally said "Don't be an asshole!" So I decided not to do that. I should, however, point out that this isn't the "regular schedule" either. It's part of the "slow start", that will even out as we progress through the season.

I landed on the topic due to a couple reasons: (1) My love for all things Beach Slang - I'll save you the Googling time and let you know that it's a lyric from one of their songs: https://beachslang.bandcamp.com/track/dirty-cigarettes and (2) a discussion about the line and how it felt like how they felt about their own writing.

So it seemed like a good fit, and the rest of the season seemed to fall into place for me after that. (more or less)

But it's not about where I go with it that's important - it's where you go.

I'm saying this both as a guide for newbies, but also a reminder for veterans, especially those who may not have been around in awhile - or have gotten rusty - The topic is the launching pad, not the destination.

This is your Work Room, a place to hammer out and discuss different ideas - or to just talk about writing in general. Really, it's whatever you need it to be.

At the end of every topic post, I say "Have fun", and I hope that you do!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
A few words from [livejournal.com profile] clauderainsrm:

4 contestants have stepped up in this Week 1 (of 4), to fight for a chance to get back into the competition!

They had 24 hours to write, and about 48 to be judged!

The poll closes Thursday, Feb 18th at 9pm EST.

The 1 with the most votes will return to LJ Idol: Friends and Rivals, effective immediately.

The others who don’t - better luck next week!

Good luck to everyone!

[Poll #2037061]
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
This is the part that always sucks.

Not everyone knows how much it does until we start seriously dwindling, but for me - it's usually my least favorite part of the week.

But, it's also the nature of the beast - that in order for us to progress in the competition, we need to say goodbye to some people.

This week is no exception, and as it's Week 1 of the Friends and Rivals - that just means there is months of this ahead on this particular journey.

Usually I play fast and loose on the idea of "IF" there will be a chance to get back into the game at some point down the road. This time though I will tell you - there will be.  Not saying when. But I will take the "if" off the table.

So hopefully those leaving us will stick around and play the Home Game - until the time comes when they can see if they can jump back into the main competition!

Leaving us today are:

(from the Individuals - where it came down to *a single vote*)

[livejournal.com profile] ashgaelsonaria

and for the Teams: Roughly 5 votes away from being safe, it was Team Celestial Coconut Pancakes that ended up coming in last.

Which means they are losing a member of their group.

[livejournal.com profile] morettaallstar

Thank you so much for coming out this mini-season and I hope we will continue seeing you around in the coming weeks!

Finally there is a useful app on Facebook!

Find out who to unfriend!   https://www.facebook.com/browse/friended_fans_of/?page_id=120173881339154

Or maybe you unfriend anyone NOT on that list!

While you are carting people off to Social Media camps, there is a vote going on!

So make sure to support your favorites! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/869815.html and http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/869530.html are where the action is happening!

Who is surprising you on "Wow. Their entry is really good - but they don't have a lot of votes!" front?
Now is the time to speak up on their behalf, to make sure people go check it out!
[identity profile] clauderainsrm.livejournal.com
What do you need?

Not "want" - there's a lot of those.... and heck, not even need as in water, air, and food... so I guess it's more of a "need".

What would transform your life if it would happen?

I'm not even thinking about the "if I got a ton of money" - because even that money itself would be the tool that you could use to get that "need" dealt with.

You get some sort of magic wish - what is it that you are changing about your life that makes everything better?

Once you get it though - I wonder if it does...

This made more sense last night. I was going to write it then and just leave it to this morning to post, but ran out of time.    Perhaps "more time" would transform my life.  ;)

You have the chance to transform the way Friends and Rivals is going to go - every time you vote for your favorites in the polls: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/869530.html and http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/869815.html

What entries have you read that you think other people need to checking out as well?
